Whomever disliked this video must be redlining, amp busting DJs. This is the best instructional video on Bozak/ Rotary mixers anywhere on KZfaq.

I disliked it because he's actually wrong and the title is misleading. Unity is max on the channel volumes and you're supposed to use the master to control the house volume, but he can use it, obviously, any way he wants.

The thing that I really, really love about Bozak mixers and even specifically this model is the balance controls and the seperate EQs for left and right. I had the opportunity to play on one a few times and it's just so amazing how you can really position and move the sound in the room. A table top rotary mixer with balance controls would be my dream... Balance controls are really niche which is a shame... Not to boast but I'm 20 and I'd take this over a Pioneer anyday...

Never seen that sort of mixer, thanks for the show and tell. The older mixer I start to use back in the 80’s was a small dj mixer I used at a friends house. That was the first 3 chanel mixer - 2 record players and one for cassette😁

I totally agree with you. The Bozak is, arguably, the best mixing system for captivating, smooth mixes. (I really wish that that digital controllers fostered this kind of approach for mixing.) The best mixes I have ever heard recorded came from a deejay who religiously used the Bozak. (Btw, that deejay---I'm keeping his name anonymous---is a Billboard award winning recipient.) Even to this day, the same deejay still uses his Bozak in conjunction with a Pioneer 1000 digital controller.

When he spoke of HEADROOM ... i got a sonic first class lesson in Headroom, when PARADISE GARAGE closed, LARRY threw a party at Club Zanzibar (in NJ where I'm born & raised) and between listening to TONY HUMPHRIES (who ain't chop'd liver himself) GERALD T. i was use to that level but the night LARRY played ... YOU LITERALLY FEEL THE HIGHER LEVEL, THE MIDS & HIGHS WERE MORE "VIVID & PRESENT" AND THE MID & SUBS WERE MORE PUNCHIER ,it sounded like as if you were in another club somewhere else.

You should try playing with the bass and treble knobs.. Turning the bass down on one track and mix bass lines I live switching from one bass to the other some tracks that mix well can Completely change the feeling of the track. Also having the bass turn down on the track your bringing in helps keep any muddiness. I love the mixer.. This thing is amazing.
@Panotaker
@Panotaker 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, you can’t do that on a Bozak. The bass and treble knobs on a Bozak only work on the main output. You can’t turn the bass down on one track, to mix like you described. That is why I never touch the bass and treble knobs. It only effects the track that is playing through the speakers.
@Reticuli
@Reticuli 4 жыл бұрын
Technically you're wrong. It's designed to turn the volume all the way up on the channels when a track is playing out. Unity on the Bozak is at max on the channel volumes. So the final volume should actually be dynamically controlled by the master out. You can do whatever you want and I understand why you're doing it the way you do, obviously, but users will get better high frequencies and better total dynamic range doing it the way its path was designed to be used. You might want to change the title of this video to "How I Use A Bozak Rotary Mixer". Nice mixes on your other videos, by the way.

Agreed. We can use the Bozak any way we like. And yes it’s true that If you Max the pot all the way up you’ll get better high frequencies and better total dynamic range.

How did you hook up the durrough meters?
@Panotaker
@Panotaker 3 жыл бұрын
I have the older meters, they have screw on terminals on the back. You buy two XLR mic cables, cut them in half, put some eye terminals on the wires, and hook them up to the screw terminals on the back of the meters. Then you put the meters between your mixer output, and your power speaker input. So basically, you unplug your speakers from the back of the mixer, and put the meters between the mixer and the speakers. The newer meters have XLR connections on the back of the meters, so they are plug and play, you just need two XLR mic cables. If you get some and can't figure it out, let me know.

Nice! Never saw this! You say it's 40 yrs old?! All I had were 2 turntables and a simple mixer.... So what's up with the albums? I don't see you changing them, just kind of going back to the first track. Just for effects or did you cut them yourself with your own tracks? @panotaker

I use a digital vinyl system (DVS) called Traktor. Basically all the music is on the laptop as MP3s. The two records are special time coded records. They come with Traktor. You use the records to manipulate the MP3s on the computer. Basically is just like playing real vinyl, except you don’t have to carry crates of records around with you. You can google Traktor Scratch Pro, or Serato to learn more about it. Yes the mixer is around 40 years old. Those old Bozaks are the first disco mixers and are still very popular today.

@@eddiemac7128 Its basically like using a DJ controller, except I use turntables. DJ's that use CD players do the same thing. Most are not playing CDs, they have their music on USB sticks as MP3's, and use the CD players to control the MP3's on the USB sticks. If you watch them, they never change CDs either. You can Dom the same thing for a lot less money with a DJ controller.

Whats the deal with the vinyl? Someone said about timecoded vinyl? Just wondering as the way you mixed, makes vinyl look like albums.
@Panotaker
@Panotaker 3 жыл бұрын
The vinyl records I use are custom made time code vinyl. Basically what they are are clear traktor vinyl that have a Puerto Rican flag glued to the back of the vinyl, so it looks like a picture disk. But they are just clear time code Traktor vinyl. I mix using Traktor Scratch Pro, which is a Digital Vinyl System, (DVS). All the music is on the laptop as MP3's, and I use the Traktor vinyl to manipulate the MP3's on the laptop. It works just like using real records, except I never have to change records, I just use those two Traktor records. I'm basically using my vinyl setup as a giant controller.
