Im 51, had issues w my knees since my 20s when I used to run. Right knee was always far worse than the left. Well I'm heavier now, cartilage in R knee is gone, pain all the time. I also have bursitis in R hip and a slipped L5. My dad had a cane most of his life due to polio, then post polio syndrome. I never understood how the cane was best on the opposite side, yet i never researched it till I needed one. This video is excellent. It taught me proper height, proper side, and it taught me just what I needed to know as to the whys of each side. Thank you so much! I'll be using a cane properly now that I have seen this. Time to go cane shopping! I've seen beautiful ones at the pharmacy.

Same. Its funny. All this knowledge at the tip of our fingers, yet still a novel concept to look it up! Im GenX. I learned by doing, never read instructions unless its technology, now here i am, finally researching how to use a cane cuz i need one, yet my dad had one all his life and i barely paid attention to it.

Gentlemen, thank you for this video. I dislocated my left kneecap in November, and I'm at a point now where I can begin to use my leg more normally, but I have been terribly afraid to move away from my crutches because of the way my leg just gave out in the initial injury. I just want to move around my house and get about my daily routine without pain. Thank you for helping me get my mobility back.

Oh, my goodness Bob and Brad you saved me again. I unfortunately might need to use a cane from time to time to help my left knee that now has mod/severe Osteoarthritis. I tore my Medial Meniscus and have a Leaking Baker's cyst since March 16, 2019. I am doing Cortisone/Lidocaine injections. I did Gelsyn3 injections last year in the Spring and I might do Supartz injections later this year perhaps. I have no cartilage in parts of my inner knee.💕

I wish more people would watch this, I get really tired of people telling me I'm using my cane on the wrong side. They usual site what they see in movies and TV. I was even accused of faking one time. The film industry does that for dramatic effect since someone using a cane properly can look like he has no problem at all.

My right leg is the bad leg. IfI use the cane on the right side I automatically lean that way and eventually I feel tension at the base of my neck. This tells me where some of the weighr is being transferred to. When I use the cane correctly - on my left side - my neck and spine stay straight. I can tell that some of the weight of the right leg is transferred to the left shoulder. I can walk pretty fast this way. Thank you for this video.

I have been using my cane and walking stick to help my balance. I tend to list to one side. The walking stick works better than the cane but isn't as welcome as the cane in public. Both seem to work best when held on the side I lose my balance. Is this because it isn't an injury, per se?

I am 24 and I have a herniated disc in my lower back and hit hits my sciatic nerve and the pain is affecting my everyday life. It all started about a month after I had my daughter (who is 10 months now) around the time I went back to work as a cashier. At first I felt pain in my thigh and I thought maybe I had pulled something and that the pain would go away. It only got worse and worse and my entire right hip, thigh, calf, and even right down to my big toe hurt so bad throughout the day. Carrying my daughter is such a pain (literally) and it bothers me that I can't even carry my own kid without being in crippling pain. I can't sleep without tossing and turning all night. I changed positions at work to work in the accounting office which requires much less lifting and bending but the pain is still there. I wonder if walking with a cane would help as I find myself walking along furniture and the walls at home to hold on to. After months of pain I finally got an MRI to show that I have a herniated disc. I get bothered that people might think I'm taking it too far if I walk with a cane because my pain is more subjective (it's not an obvious broken leg, but just my own threshold of pain) but my daughter is only going to get bigger and heavier and I need some relief. Should I walk with a cane? Or would it make it worse? Or is it not necessary? I'm desperate (and starting physical therapy today finally) for some relief.

I was released from the hospital 2 days ago and just prior to that release, I had two "therapists" instruct me of the proper way to use my cane. (injury was a femoral by-pass repair for an Aneurysm that was originally performed 18 years ago) They told me that the cane should always follow with the "good" leg. It didn't seem correct to me, and I expressed my logical conclusion. They repeatedly told me; "No, that is a common misunderstanding, let the cane move withe the good leg!". I am going to do it the way yourselves and many others have instructed: When the 'bad leg' advances, so should the cane held by the hand the on the 'good' side. Thanks for your video! That said, should I inform the therapists at the hospital of their misinformation?

What about a cane being used for bilateral hip problems that cause generalized imbalance? I have chronic pain from arthritis and osteoporosis (ex-nurse) and have trouble walking. Also experiencing generalized weakness and have had multiple falls. I recently got a cane and am concerned that it will not help with my instability. Any suggestions? Thanks for the video. I think we still have one that belonged to my mother. She was short and small also. Not sure what we have since I rarely am able to make it downstairs to the basement storage area. Will ask my husband to get it out for me to use. I tried using the cane, but still feel unstable. I have severe agoraphobia and social phobia so going out is more complicated for me than just physical issues. I hold onto my husband for both balance and because I experience disociation related visual hallucinations. But have been turned down for disability x2 so far. Life is dificult!!! Thank you!

This is similar to the issues I am having...but I think I would be too clumsy to use two canes. I can't afford to see a dr. much less have surgery to replace my bone on bone hips (no insurance and waiting/praying to get disability approval). I have one cane that my husband just got me and it's a bit too tall, but will have to do. I usually just hold onto him for balance, but with his bad back it hurts him to have me hanging on him. Hope I can learn to use the one cane to help me with balance. Hope your surgery went well Mr. Quasus.

He also struggles sitting down and getting up using the can. It almost falls over when he sits it down to get in his chair. Also its too far away from the chair to really help him up. He has VASCULAR dementia and doesnt want to use the kane. Mom badgers him to use it and is ALWAYS WORRIED ABOUT HIM FALLING…

None of the YT vids I've watched on this topic so far will explain the reason for using the cane on the opposite side from the bad leg. Why is that? You don't know how to take the info you learned from your training about it & break it down to a simple way of explaining to someone w/o your training? I have a knee that buckles on me due to being bone-on-bone from osteoarthritis. If it buckles on me when the cane is moving with it, that means my good leg is behind me and can't help should the bad leg buckle. If the leg goes on me, then I will fall toward the direction where the leg buckled, right? The cane won't hold me up on its own if the involved leg buckles.

If you use it like you're walking with a cane on the opposite side of the net and if you need a refresher on that take a look at the video on how to walk with a c so let me dive in strain how to come down a set of stairs so what you're going to do is you want to hold on to the rail you're going to put the can down and you're going to leave down with your injured or weak foot first and then bring your good foot on down okay so go on to put the cane down on your bad foot down first1 more time here were going to come down first with the bad foot I now want to take a look at how to walk up the stairs so I innocently hand over here at the rail on the side it doesn't matter which side the canon just so we have some for one side of our body as we go up or down the stairs so what you're going to do when you're going up a lanyard tied on with a prussic knoy you can avoid lifting the cane completely the project not on your wrist will handle that

If you guys ever hurt your meniscus and can't put any weight on your knee at all, you'll change your tune as to which side you use your cane on. Go Doctor House! Using it on the opposite side does nothing to take the weight off of your knee or aid with the excruciating pain. It's the same side or stay in bed for weeks!
