Absolutely. As a pianist I do a lot of embellishment up and down my keys. However, strings instruments have so much possibilites in terms of playing just the one sound or chord. There are so many nuances. Just beautiful.

Hello Joy! I'm new to the Cello. I have watched many of your beginning videos. They have been extremely helpful! This one confirmed my approach to playing with charts. Music theory 101. This is the same approach I use for playing bass. Thanks for the confirmation.

Thanks Sarah. This was informative. I am trying to understand the cello in order to arrange instruments as support for my piano. I found that the cello has absolutely beautiful sound since it can be handle playful melodies, but does it with very dark and expressive tones. I am gonna binge watch Your videos now. :D

Nice video. I'm a guitar player who's learning to play cello in a contemporary worship setting, so this is the kind of stuff I'm mostly trying to work on. I definitely need to up my arpeggio game! Another technique I like to use is to outline the chords with walking lines in sixths because they are really easy to play, and you can also catch two chord tones at once, and pay a bit more thought to voice leading that just using block chords. Of course, it will take some extra preparation to do this well until you get the hang of it. As to cello parts being more interesting than guitar parts, it depends A LOT on the player and also what one finds interesting in music. Cello parts in popular music are usually more interesting in terms of melodic content, but, while an acoustic guitar plays chords and certainly *can* play melodies, the most effective way to approach the instrument in most ensembles is to think of it as a percussion instrument. It may just be strumming chords, but often the more interesting thing is how it chooses to accent various subdivisions of the beat. I believe cellists do not think in these terms as often (of course, there are also cello players who reinforce the rhythm very effectively, especially in popular all-cello ensembles like 2Cellos and Apocalyptica). I also tend to think more in terms of melodies than rhythmic accents, which is one of the reasons I think cello is probably a better fit for my brain than guitar! A good jazz guitarist will also put a lot of thought into chord voicings and voice leading in the inner voices. Cellists also think about voice leading, but more often only for one voice at a time. Very good guitar players often combine chords, basslines, melodic lines and rhythmic accents in. Here's an example of John Mayer doing just that: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/odqpm7uilZa2qIU.html I find this guitar part quite interesting!

This was awesome thank you:) Did you ever have the issue of having to practice in an apartment? I am going to move out soon and I am afraid I won't be able to play as much anymore because of the neighbours. (Or at least afraid I won't do the stuff that is annoying to listen to such as all of the technical things). I know I just need to use my heavy mute and play at an appropriate time, but perhaps you have other tips:).
@sarahjoyrecordings
@sarahjoyrecordings 7 жыл бұрын
Yes I did, and I know the struggle. You're right about the mute and timing of practicing. Other than those things, I can't really suggest many other options. You might find a local music school with practice rooms, or invest in a silent electric cello.

At the 5:16min mark, I'm not sure why you went from G major to B major to C major. Where did the C major come from? I understand that the B major is related to the G major (part of the triad), but how does C major fit in? Thanks!
@vivianhudson9145
@vivianhudson9145 4 жыл бұрын
I think the C major chord was just an easier route to G major. Going from 5 sharps to one is harder than no sharps to one, and it's a pretty common chord movement to just go up a note (B to C). Hope this helps!

Sarah my bow broke today I have band tomorrow with no replacement bow and my bridge has move and it's has titled I'm so scared to move it I just got my cello a week ago and it's quite a lot of money what do I do
@sarahjoyrecordings
@sarahjoyrecordings 7 жыл бұрын
Oh no!! Your school might have a spare bow. Don't move the bridge yourself! Take it to an instrument shop or perhaps to an orchestra director.

I don't mean to write a comment thats unrelated to the topic of this video, but I've watched your "how to tape first position" video and noticed in this video you have first position tape on your cello. I noticed that your tapes are straight across but when I placed the tape straight across, when I pitched checked the notes when bowed, they were a little off. It was more accurate to have the tape at an angle. I don't know if this is because there is something not quite right with my cello, or if I'm just losing it. I am assuming though that, similar to how a guitars' frets aren't "correct", as in intonation, that this concept carries over to other stringed instruments. In regards to this video, thanks for all the helpful info you give out. One reason that I am learning the cello is so that when I return home from school, I will be able to play cello on our church's worship team. Knowing how to arpeggiate chords will be a beneficial skill for me to learn.

I'm thinking that your strings might just be sliiiightly out of tune. The tape should definitely be put straight across.

With tapes, I’ve always been told that they’re more of a guide, rather than a dead in in tune note, as a way to teach us to listen and develop our ear. You’re definitely right though, taping isn’t always going to get you in tune perfectly, and the notes are slightly off.

Maybe a dumb question: but can you not just play any note in the scale of the song your playing in?? Like Key of G for example just play a G scale essentially?
@ninjaaron
@ninjaaron 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. However, creating an effective cello part that blends well usually does involve emphasizing chord tones. If you have good ears, you will probably create lines that emphasize chord tones naturally, but actually knowing what those tones are is helpful. You can also choose to emphasize other notes like sevenths, seconds, fourths or sixths, but this will create a different musical effect. Emphasizing chord tones is more the approach in writing cello parts in classical music, while emphasizing notes outside the chord may evoke jazzier harmonic ideas. Especially if the cello is effectively the bass instrument in the ensemble, choosing to emphasize notes outside of the chord may have an unusual effect. There are no wrong answers, but you have to be aware that it will really change the sound of the song. If you're in a setting where you choose to emphasize chord tones, of course you will often use other steps of the scale as transitional notes, which isn't the same as emphasizing them. The difference between playing notes in the scale and thinking in terms of chord tones is about *intentionality*. The first comes down to instinct and the second means you're making specific musical decisions. Relying on instinct is useful when the cello has a solo, but when creating a part to blend with the group, I find intentionality is more helpful, and I think your band mates will also appreciate it. I hope this mansplanation was helpful.
