Thank you Bobby, we're glad that you found it helpful! We decided to add that section on electricity basics as we know that its area where people common had a partial understanding with some concepts that were a bit fuzzy. The rest of the video is definitely easier to understand after the first section.

* *Update* * Another note on safety when testing live voltage: In the video it is recommended to always check the multimeter leads for damage before use as well as to hold the multimeter leads from the insulated handle. For additional layer of safety, its best to wear electrical safety gloves and to only hold the multimeter in one hand at any given time. Holding the multimeter leads in one hand will prevent electricity from passing from one side of the body to the other in the case of a shock. This is known as the "one hand rule".

I would also advise that the multimeter switch is always left on the AC volts position when putting it away. If it is left on the resistance setting for instance and then used it to check AC volts next time you might only blow the internal fuse but it could be a lot worse. Electrical arc burns are usually life changing if you actually survive. In fact the best approach is to say out loud to yourself what you're about to do and how.

Great video! Concise, no-nonsense and clearly explained. Question… An electrician installed an outdoor overhead light box years ago in anticipation of a custom fixture that was being made. Fast forward to now and I’m ready to install however, I’d like to test to see if those wires still work and I’m not sure what circuit feeds it. Can I use a multimeter to see if the line is still hot by touching the wires? Or can I simply use a socket bulb with bare wires doing the same?
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, we're glad that you found it helpful! The safest way to verify if wires are hot is to use a non-contact voltage tester or NCVT www.amresupply.com/search?q=voltage+tester These detect the magnetic field around a wire so it has the advantage of verifying if a single wire is hot even without a reference to ground or neutral.

never touch a live wire always turn off the power source then you touch a wire, it also demands on what is the gauge of the wire to discharge the current and voltage and many things to know when it comes to residential building code and V / I / R etc voltage law etc

I see you skipped over the HZ setting. Granted it's something you will probably never have a need to use, but I found it to be very helpful when adjusting the speed of a portable generator engine. Someone had messed with the adjustment, and the generator was running closer to 50HZ than 60HZ. A simple adjustment brought it back to 60HZ.

Excellent video. I’m hoping you can answer a question or two. Can I use a multimeter to find out if an outlet is 15 amps or 20 amps? If so, could you please explain or demonstrate how to do so? Thank you in advance.
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, we're glad that you found it helpful! The amp type will refer to the maximum current that it can handle, so even with a clamp meter this can be difficult to test as a device that you plug in might not draw the full 20 amps. You can look at the breaker panel, the 15 and 20 amp breakers will be labeled there. As well you can look at the outlet itself. 20 Amp outlets will have a horizontal slot on one of the plugs. This prevents a 20 amp device from being plugged into a 15 amp outlet. It will look like this www.amresupply.com/part/15223050
@milom.2057
@milom.2057 2 жыл бұрын
@@AmreSupply Ah! I kept wondering why some outlets had that extra slot to the side-its for and signifies that it is a 20amp outlet. The reason for the questions, a relative told me to plug in an extension cord to a 20amp outlet (reason being was to provide some power to my travel trailer which is parked in my driveway). So I know that I need to have 30 or 50 amps wired...but in the meantime, this is a temporary solution. I keep popping the breaker when I turn on the 15,000 btu ac. My relative was thinking that the outlet to my dryer was 20 amp. Hence the reason for asking “can I use a multimeter to see what the amperage is on an outlet. Thanks again for your video and help! You stated categorically that (domestic) power is 120v. Since this video goes world wide you should have mentioned that countries have different voltages. E.g. Australia has 240v. Saying this may prevent electrocution.

Thank you and you are spot on! When making these there is definitely a consideration of how granular these explanations need to be. We'd run into that same issue when talking about conventional verses electron flow. You could spend a whole video trying to explain the details and for most people that is far beyond what they need to know. This video was created mostly to support our appliance and HVAC repair videos where we isolate and test components for continuity. Understanding the principles behind it help. Thanks for watching, we're just happy to share some good information: For additional layer of safety, its best to wear electrical safety gloves and to only hold the multimeter in one hand at any given time. Holding the multimeter leads in one hand will prevent electricity from passing from one side of the body to the other in the case of a shock. This is known as the "one hand rule".

Well, what can i say, i don't have a multimeter now :D
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. These sorts of things can happen to the best of us, which is why its always good to check the settings before every use. There is a fuse inside of the multimeters that will blow if the current exceeds the rated value. That fuse can be replaced, so your multimeter might not be completely lost.
