I understand that. I just cant get my new rotary cutter to cut. Do you have to press hard?

No, it should be easy! Make sure you don’t have two blades in it accidentally.

New to sewing … I bought a rotary cutter, mat and ruler. But the ruler tends to slide around or the blade doesn’t cut the whole length of the fabric. Any tips?

You can get a product called Sure Grips for the ruler! They work so great for the sliding. As for cutting, it helps if your cutting surface isn't so tall that you can't bear down sufficiently as you're cutting. But also, make sure you replace the blade often, it should be sharp enough that you don't have to muscle it much when cutting. I hope that helps!
