I recently purchased this Stanley 71 Router plane and wanted to show what all it could do.
A router plane is actually an easy tool to make and there are many different types. the Stanley #71 is one of the most common hand routers, and it is a lot of fun to use.

James, you may have mentioned it and I missed it, but blades for the Stanley 71 and 71-1/2 can run $50 each on ebay. I have a couple of these router planes and a couple Veritas large routers. The veritas blades will actually fit the stanleys and work great if you flip the top adjusting knob upside down...and the veritas blades average $13. Good thing for new guys to know!

I just got my hands on a record o71 in a job lot of tools and this is number one to restore though it had no blades I did manage to get a 1/2" on eBay for £27 UK still a bargain considering the amount of other tools I acquired. Restoration of old tools and use is by far better than new as I think of them that once made a living from them and I carry on the same traditional ways many have forgotten today.

By turning the iron 90° and setting it on the back, you can have a longer reference surface between the plane and the surface for a long rabbet / rebate. Both handles are now over the board instead of one hanging off the side. No tipping. Them ol' fellers were smart.

A really informative video. I have just bought one at a car boot sale and i found you video very helpful. You refer to the router as a Stanly 71 1/2 but it is a 71 which you correct at the end of the video. The post for the depth stop has a smaller diameter at one end, what is that for? Do you have any idea what thread is required for the edge guide?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 жыл бұрын
the smaller end is if you are using the 1/4" cutter head. great for creating 1/4" groves. I do not know what the threads are. i would have to take it to the hardware store and test them. sorry.

Great job on the review.. I really was unlighted with some of the different techniques of setting it up for different cuts. The route plan in the one tool that has eluded me, on craigslist, eBay, antique sales and garage sales. most times because I am cheap on how much I would and well pay for a tool that just because its old does not make it an antique and worth the price of a new Veritas lets say. So in your honest opinion what is a reasonable price to pay for a working mans 71 or 71 ½ Router Plane... Thank you for your time and videos.

Thanks. that is one of the reasons I mad mine that I used for a long time. it works well and I probably would not have gotten one except for when I saw this one. a friend of mine found it wrapped in the original packing in the box with sales tags and everything unused. at $125 it was a steel! but to find one with a bit of rust with one blade but in functional condition fair price around me is about $60 in poor condition or missing parts it is around $30 good condition with all the parts is around $100 or more.

Router planes are a blast to use. One way of getting around the situation where you have a very wide recessed area to clean out but if you have an older Stanley 71 like I do that doesn't have holes for mounting a wider wood sole onto it, you can leave 1/2" untouched strips spaced out not too far apart so you can recess an area while still having support on both sides of the plane. Later, when you have made all the areas perfect you can easily chop out those support strips from your work and plane the remnants smooth. I do this quite often on wide tenons.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 7 жыл бұрын
I have done that a few times too. It works great!

I will take a look at it and see what mine is. and very true along the edge should be parallel to the bed but back from the blade should be about 5 degrees or so. I could have been a bit more clear on that.

The thing with router planes is to be patient. Many people try to force them too hard, cutting too deep, which does nothing for the finish.
@MiceNine9

So, I have a beech body ECE router plane that's very similar to the one you made yourself. I'm in the process of trying to modify it to add a detachable fence, like the 71 has, and hopefully to accommodate some custom base plates for a few projects that I'm working on. I have a general idea of how I'm going to do it, but I was curious if you have any ideas or suggestions for someone who is relatively new to woodworking.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 7 жыл бұрын
Great question. first I would ask what you want the fence for? I have only used it once, and that was because I was feeling lazy! LOL, but if I were to make one I would cut two slots in a plank and put two screws into he body the slots would allow it to slide in and out from the iron. much how a classic Rebate plane fence would work. I would love to see what you come up with.
@MiceNine9

Mostly wanting to cut long, straight grooves in hardwood (truss-rod slots in a guitar neck and a banjo neck). Don't have a plow plane or a combo plane. Also interested in finding a way to cut short rabbets around a curve without using power router (for putting binding on the edges of the guitar body).
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 7 жыл бұрын
well to have it make a groove or rabbit you would have to have a soul or depth stop in front oof the cutter. or you would have to slowly advance the router with each pass. for a rabbit it might be faster and easier to make a rabbit plane for a chisel. that is not to say that it can not make the cut, but it is not the first tool I would think about to make it. the other option would be to cut the two walls of the groove with a saw then to remove the waste with a router. that way you do not have to worry about chip out.
@bbrachman
@bbrachman 6 жыл бұрын
Is holding the iron at the proper angle during sharpening just a matter of practice? I have trouble 'feeling' the bevel angle. If I can, then as I move it, the angle changes a bit. What do you think? Simply practicing or is there another trick to keeping the angle flat against the 'stone'?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 жыл бұрын
it is more practicing not moving the arm and elbow. keep them locked and move at the waist or ankle. that will make it so there is less pivot at the tool.

Here is the list of my equipment. www.woodbywright.com/tool-suggestions/av-equiptment I usually tell people to start with your phone. Most phones now are just as good if not better than a GoPro. The only down side is the audio. You can not plug in a secondary or lapel mic. My suggestion is, make a bunch of videos with your phone and then ask yourself if you like making artistic shots or if you just want to collect the information for a video. If you are in the first group you are about to spend $2000+ on video equipment. If you are in the second group, then a GoPro and handheld gyro will be all you need. that being said you will never know what you want till you shoot and edit a bunch of videos first. So don't spend any money yet. at least that is my advice.

James, is the blade supposed to be parallel to the base of the plane or at an angle? Also, do you know a reliable source for additional blades? My No. 71 only has the 1/2 blade.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 8 жыл бұрын
the flat of the blade should be about 5 degrees up from parallel with the bed. but the blade tip should be perfectly parallel with the bed. the Veritas irons will work with Stanley's. but if you want original Stanley blades usually the best place to find them is on eBay.

@WoodByWright

You can. a rabbit is just s groove that is missing a side. just set the fence for how wide you want the rabbit. you will be limited to as thin as your thinnest iron but there are not many rabbits that are thinner then 1/4"

I found out lately that the stem of the throat closing plate is to be used as a chip thickness limiter when plowing out something(esp. when doing grooves with the fence for controlling your path). You set the blade at the final depth and put the stem just a bit higher (thus controlling the chip thickness) now you can go at it without having to constantly lower your blade for every pass. the thinner end is for narrower grooves. I cannot see though how the throat closing plate could be used as a depth stop.cheers.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 8 жыл бұрын
That was a poor choice of words for me. Sorry I was wanting to say it would limit the depth of cut as you were stating not as in a depth stop like on the Veritas stem nut. Sorry for the confusion. I had already shot the section cutting the grove. but the video was contaminated. And I had to settle for the clip with out the stem in place.

I’m looking to purchase one, but the prices are everywhere. Given inflation and our current (2022) economy, how much should I look to spend on a Stanley no 71?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on where you're at and what condition you're looking at. If you're in the Midwest and you're willing to get one that needs some work and comes with one iron, then you're probably looking around $80. It's been at that price for about the last 5 to 6 years. But if you're on the west coast, that same plane has gone way up and will now run you 160 plus. But if you're wanting one with all the extras, the sky is the limit right now. They're usually about the same price or a little bit more than a new one from varitis.
