How to use a shaving soap sample to create Lather | The Daily Shave

Welcome to the Daily Shave, I’m your host for this episode Jon and today I have an instructional video for you on How to Lather a Soap Sample.
DO NOT lather from the small sample jar.
Grab your favorite shaving bowl. If you don’t have one, no problem, a coffee mug, cereal bowl or salsa bowl with a wide mouth will do just fine.
Scoop out the entire sample with your finger or a spoon and press it to the bottom of your bowl. You want to spread out the soap sample as wide as possible to maximize surface area when loading your brush. Note that this is less important if you are working with a cream sample, which is super soft in comparison to a soap.
Dampen your brush and load by swirling in the bowl 20-30 seconds (or more if you like). From there you could then build up your lather on your face OR continue in the bowl, adding a few drops of water at a time, until it’s roughly the consistency of yogurt.
You are now ready for your shave!

I got two shaves out the TOBS sample I received. I floated the closed container in a sink of hot water and then poured half the sample in my tub. The hot water melted it to a liquid.

Just a tad maybe tblsp of hot water in your bowl… scoop out the sample with spoon 🥄 Doesn’t take much…

Great video! I think this will be helpful for wet shavers starting out. Another thing that I do is keep samples in empty tubs so that I can keep loading from there, especially Stirling samples because they're huge.

Great video Sir! I have a hot lather machine in my shop but occasionally I will use a traditional shaving cream samples on some of my regular shave customers. Old school cool!

I can get more than just one shave out of the samples I buy. Why waste the whole sample in one shave. Just scoop some out and use your lathering bowl.

She Shaves with Jill I’m glad you bring that up: while I do think you should empty the entire sample container into your vessel, I am not advocating to use the sample for only one shave.

I was cracking up cause it was so much lather! That's also a really nice shave bowl. I personally prefer scuttles because I like the warm lather. Also I use a cheese knife to scoop about half walnut size of sample into the scuttle then put hot water then lather. As long as you smash it into the bowl and cover alot of surface seems to work great. Thanks for the video John 👍

i use a butter knife to split the sample into 4 quarters, and scoop out a quarter at a time into my shave bowl. i'm able to get about 3 shaves per quarter, with out much waste. but i only do one pass shaves against the grain shaves on my face and head... so i get a little more mileage out of soap vs folks who like to do 2 or 3 pass shaves. ✌

If the sample is a cream sample I just dip my finger into the sample and place the cream on my cheeks and work it with a wet brush. I get several uses out of a sample with that method. (I actually do the same thing when I use TOBS or D.R. Harris...etc in the tub.)

Captain's choice sent me a sample pack of soaps. The sandal wood one smelled noting like sandal wood, it smelled like dirt.

Man, sandalwood is one of those scents that can really vary between artisans!

That is a ridiculous amount of soap you are recommending using. I have used many soaps and I use 1/16 tsp soap to 1/2 Tbsp of distilled water. It makes plenty of lather to do a 3-pass shave with tons left over. Quit wasting soap people.
