I use my bezel almost daily. Elapsed time walking the dog, when I'm grilling it helps me to remember to flip the meat every five minutes as well as the overall cooking time, and I set the index to an upcoming appointment time (I use the hour hand in that case). You could even use it as a reminder to do something by purposely setting it off the 12 o'clock position - when your OCD kicks in and you go to fix it, you remember that you did it for a reason.
@raczgabor659
@raczgabor659 Жыл бұрын
Alright, that reminder part is pretty cool idea. But for measuring time.... Why don't you just... Look at the minute hand? I get that some people don't like math but adding up numbers between 0-60 shouldn't really be that hard

I think it must be made clear that the bezel on a diving watch was never intended to measure how long your dive is or your "bottom time" or anything like that. Dive time depends on how much breathable air is in the tank and that is measured using a pressure gauge. People breathe differently so some people drain a tank faster than others. The rotating bezel on a dive watch is intended to measure the elapsed time when making decompression stops during an ascent. When diving deep you are meant to pause at various intervals during the return to the surface for fixed amounts of time in order to prevent complications with expanding nitrogen in the blood. The bezel is meant to help ensure that each pause is long enough (it can be a little annoying to wait when you're done the dive and tempted to get out of the water asap and have a beer on the boat)

Good to mention that the bezel only rotates in one direction so that if it gets bumped and moved slightly after initial setting for a dive, it can’t move in a direction that makes you think you have more bottom time left than you really do which is a major safety feature for us divers.

@@svint3684 Yes, one direction. So it can't move in the direction indicating that you have more air. If it gets bumped, it indicates that you have less time, therefore more air time. It's a safety feature.

I can scarcely swim, much less dive, but I get the allure of rotating timing bezels. The only watch I possess with a "proper" timing bezel, however, is a vintage Seiko 6139 chronograph. But, two of my other watches, both also Seikos (a 017 Alpinist, and, very recently, a 5 Sports GMT) can also be used this way, simply by placing the bezel's reference-point forward of the minute hand to your desired time. This actually comes in handy when I'm doing the Iron Chef thing and timing several things at once, and Google is already busy with at least one of them. (Since the 6139 also possesses a chronograph functions, it can handle two timed events at once.)

I use the bezel like a stopwatch. Say you start timing something from 1:05pm until 1:20pm, the minute hand would have moved to 15 minutes on the bezel. Now if i get interrupted with a phone call or knock on the door, i move the 15 on the bezel to the 12 o'clock position to remember my stopped time. Then after my interruption i put the 15 on the bezel at 12 o'clock back on the minute hand. Let's say it's now 1:27pm and the timer continues.

So specifically for divers, you use the bezel to time your bottom time. Bottom time starts when you begin your descent from the surface so just before you go down, you zero the bezel on the minute hand. FYI max bottom time at 60 ft. depth is 60 minutes for non-decompression dives.
@TheIronDuke9
@TheIronDuke9 9 ай бұрын
This is a misconception and it not what it's used for. Bottom time varies depending on a number of variables, but the amount of breathing air available in a tank is not dependant on time. A pressure gauge is used to determine how much air is in the tank. The watch bezel is used to time the decompression stops during the ascent
