Cool! I created this exact setup in January 2018 after trying to find a way of using Zwift without a trainer for my road bike or buying an expensive smart trainer. I found a spin bike with a broken crank arm on eBay for £20 ($30), easy fix for $10. Bought the Assioma Uno, cheap Ant + dongle and a cheap heart rate monitor and got it all ruining on my iMac in my living room. I use the Zwift companion app on my iPhone mounted on my handlebars so as to control Zwift on my iMac, works a dream. The biggest issue I had was getting the pedals calibrated with Zwift but I hooked them up to the Wahoo app and did a calibration ride. Glad to see someone else who had the same idea and got it working too :-) Like you I live in a tiny apartment but in London and I also have a very understanding wife!

The understanding wife is the most important part to be successful LOL. Sounds like you got your setup going for pretty cheap! The great thing about spin bikes is that they don't really wear down, so used is a great option if you can find one cheap nearby. Ride on!

@@TwoWheelCruise Great video thanks pal. One thing though, you mention that it is cheap option but at €780 for pedals! ....thats hard to justify. I get the advantage of a spin bike, always there, quiet, cheap but that cost is a killer IMO.

Absolutely awsome !!! I moved my Assioma Duo power metering pedals to my wife’s spin bike, adjusted geometry and yes !! it works great with Zwift, way better than any smart trainer, no noise, easy to sprint, no damage to the frame or wear to my road bike,,,,, all positive effects... And easy to change the Assioma pedals back and forth between the 2 bikes. Kudos for this solution !!!!!

Cool, even two years after! :) I am spinning instructor and the fixed flying wheel can also be an advantage depending on the technique. But you need to ride it as a track fixed bicycle. Even though your legs will always be moving you can use the momentum of that heavy rotational mass for relaxing the muscles for a couple of seconds as long as you don't let it slow down too much. I would not say that spinning bikes don't generate heat. The flying wheel after a spinning class gets so hot that you can barely touch it. :)

using zwift on a spinning bike as well. Mine has a builtin power meter and cadence sensor. My spinning bike send out the sensor signals using ant+. With an ant+ usb dongle this can be connected to Zwift running on windows. What I am. using now is the North Pole Engineering Cable device that converts ant+ to Bluetooth. Than I use zwift on android. Really happy with this setup.

@@minombreeslos I have a life fitness Ic5. It works with android through my North Pole Engineering CABLE device. It also works with Windows 10 and an Ant+ Bluetooth dongle. The bike does gives 0RPM and 0watts when RPM is below 50, but that is not a real problem for me. An alternative would be to get a cheaper spinning bike and buy for instance the garmin vector 3s power pedals. Another alternative is to spend more money on an Ic6 since it supposedly supports Bluetooth natively and has higher power precision, but for the price difference you can probably get power pedals. Whatever bike you get, make sure it has magnetic resistance and a V belt for low maintenance.

Regarding the resistance pads. They look like felt pads on OG Spinners. Using silicone only spray will lubricate and increase mechanical longevity and still get the higher resistance, without that drive train lock-up at super high resistance. Don't use any petroleum oils on the pads as it will cook and glaze the pads, ruining them. So again, silicone spray without any petroleum. Very much appreciate this video.

Thank you for the video. Maybe an update with you actually pulling up a ride on Zwift would be just as helpful. I was wondering if a speed sensor along with a power meter would be more realistic but apparently not really needed. I have several road bikes and have been thinking about Zwift for the winter months. I recently learned how to hook up my old Blackburn Trackstand using a speed sensor. Zwift already had the power conversions for it but then I thought it would be so much more convenient and much less wear and tear if I could use the older spin bike instead. Your video is a godsend. I just had those other questions about a speed sensor because that what I had to get for the road bike. I will be looking into purchasing those power pedals as they were also recommended at another Chanel as well. Peace ✌🏽

I got a spinbike too. Schwin - has a nice bicycle feel to it. I put my garmin cadence and speed sensors on it, and it works well. Is the on-screen speed accurate, I would say yes. But pedalling harder, for example when going up a hill, won't do anything for your online speed, you have to pedal faster. The spinbike I got doesn't use the felt-brake type resistance, but earth magnets -- totally silent - no noise from the friction, as there is none, not to mention no wear, and feels like the resistance on the road (highly recommend the magnet spin bikes). You just have to be honest to yourself and turn up the resistance for the up hills, and down. One thing I found with the spinbike, is when I got back onto the road after indoor winter training, I was able to really spin it out and maintain a much higher speed using a lower gear. The main drawback I'd say would be that you're always in the same gear and thus pretty much stay in the same position for the whole ride. I also changed the seat because the one that came with it just hurt my ass something fierce (wider and softer = pain). I got my spinbike at a local auction -- gyms are constantly either going out of business or overturning their equipment, so you can get a gym quality bike for a couple hundred bucks or less, if you're lucky at the auction ($1200 new).

11:39 The Assioma Favero power pedals INCLUDE A CADENCE READER TOO???? Thank you so much for mentioning that, that solves an issue I thought I was going to have this summer. In 2018 I bought a Canyon road bike in September and a Wahoo ELEMNT bundle in October - two big expenses - so I decided to enjoy a period of just HR training for a period before spoiling myself with the next (and final) upgrade, power. You totally sold me with your review of the Assioma Favero pedals a few months ago, so I decided I will purchase them around March/April. The main reason I'm sold on pedal based power over crank-based is, as you've mentioned often, you simply swap the pedals onto different bikes and have power on whatever bike you want. When I go to Japan this summer I'm going to bring my set up - soon to be purchased power pedals, Wahoo ELEMNT and all the Wahoo stuff that comes with it (Tickr HRM, Wahoo Speed Sensor). But not the Wahoo Cadence, because it's stuck (glued) onto the crank arm on my Canyon (my US bike) and I didn't want to mess with taking it off to stick on my Allez (my Japan bike). I was going to buy a separate Wahoo Cadence for the Allez, which admittedly is only $40. But now that I know the Favero pedals do cadence, that's one less expense to achieve my perfect setup for this summer. Thanks Cruise, I'm so glad I watched your video to the end! 😂😂😂

@@kokoyhawaii Yep, that makes sense, and that's what I'm saying as well. If you're putting out 300W on flat, why would you all of a sudden put out 350W going up a hill? So in zwift everyone slows down when taking the hill so it's not actually a problem?

I’m going to go against the grain here and give a few critiques on this video. He mentions sound and price as two of the main reasons to use a spin bike. Sound I definitely understand, but some of the newer models are getting pretty quiet. Price: this rubbed me the wrong way. Let’s start with the 5 bikes I can see in the background. I love my bikes and have quite the stable myself, but if I was really focused on off season training and budget constrained, I think I could part with one bike to buy a smart trainer (or two). How about the set of $650 pedals (more in Japan?) and a $350 desk (no alternatives?!). Those two items alone would by a new high end smart trainer.

I can't get above 100-110 Watts no matter what the resistance is which is ridiculously low, but i don't know if it's just because I'm new to cycling or it just can't get accurate power data? hey two wheel cruise, i have a question, i am very keen to do this but before i was about to buy some fever assioma pedals the bike shop has told me that it may not work depending on calibrating the pedals as i do not have a bike computer (such as a garmin edge etc) he said i will need to calibrate for a spin bike as you would not be able to show speed, only cadence and power. so im running a mac laptop and a standard samsung smart phone, is there anything else needed?. I see people say the wahoo phone app allows for calibrating? any help would be great
@TwoWheelCruise
@TwoWheelCruise 4 жыл бұрын
You can calibrate within the favero phone app. For zwift, the pedals will give you cadence and power, which is all you need. The speed sensor is meaningless since power is more accurate for zwift anyway. You will also need the ANT+ dongle I believe

If you don't already have the power pedals, wouldn't it be a net zero sum to either go this route or a smart trainer? With the exception of having a dedicated bike.
@TwoWheelCruise
@TwoWheelCruise 5 жыл бұрын
The Uno pedals are only $420, plus a $200~$300 spin bike, and it's still cheaper than the silent smart trainers which start at about $900. Plus you can use the pedals on your normal bike and no wear on the normal bike, so I think it's still a great option even if you don't already have the smart pedals.

Great video thanks - when I cycle on ZWIFT really hard the animation is still very slow - my cheapish spin bike has built in blue tooth connectivity however I have the feeling that regardless of the resistance (power) this isn't being reflected in the app - think its just transmitting cadence? So to confirm my understanding I need a power meter to reflect the different watts in ZWIFT? otherwise I could just spin with no resistance or do I need cadence and heart rate too? Confused on what is needed to reflect my speed in the app correctly.
@TwoWheelCruise
@TwoWheelCruise 4 жыл бұрын
I would not trust the data pt from a cheap spin bike, it will not be accurate. The best way to connect to zwift is with a dedicated power meter, so either pedals or crank arm attachment for a spin bike.

The Assioma Uno power meter pedals are pretty dang accurate. I have them set up on my peloton for use on zwift as well and I doubt they are not reading accurately. Maybe try performing the zero offset before your next ride to make sure they are fully calibrated. Other than that, just Ride on and build that strengrh.

My Tacx trainer broke down two weeks ago, reading the stories from customers about smart trainers is putting me off to buy another smart trainer, IMHO added to all those experiences I read, smart trainers eventually break for one reason or another, and they are not cheap. I am now considering a robust spinning bike to add my sensors. Have you considered adapting a road shift lever to control the resistance? Do you think it will work?
@TwoWheelCruise

Spin bikes are way more durable and cheaper. I'm fine with using the default resistance wheel, but I guess you could upgrade to a more real-like setup.

So I stumbled across this video because I’m trying to research anything that would allow my stationary bike which is not a spin bike like this that you see in all the videos to be able to run in Zwift or apps like Zwift. I was recently gifted a freemotion 370r and it’s your pretty run of the mill smart bike (I guess you could call it) for today. Every method I have found states for some reason it can not be used with that bike or other exercise bikes similar to it, yet I see no reason why if this method works on a very simple bike why it wouldn’t work for literally any bike? Just wondering if anyone has any information into this

Yes, this is one of the weaknesses I address in the video, but it's not a problem since you can just manually adjust the resistance when you start a climb.
