Wesley started bowling at the age of 2 1/2 and was an aspiring pro bowler. He went from the junior ranks, collegiate bowling, adult bowling, and now the PBA as of November 2019. Years after the fact but I am now looking into pads and from this vid it surely gave me the best insight of what grit to use based on how I want my ball to react.... I have two Radical trail Blazer solids .. pin up and a pin down... I'm noticing after a few months the new ball cover stock is winding down and not reacting as it once did with the pin down.... I think I'll test out either a 2000 or 1000 grit and see if I notice a change and get her back to the reaction she once had.... Thanks for putting this out .... very good detailed vid.....

I like a lot of surface on a short pattern too. I can use big asym equipment and it burns up by the time it leaves the end of the pattern. I still get the move of the core but a much smoother reaction when it gets to the spot. Speed dominant lefty here btw

I can't use shiny or polished, if I don't knock the shine off then it's a spare ball for me. I think it is because I'm a higher tilt and a lower rotation, med to track. 13 to 15 nph on screen. I love the look of the shiny and or pearl bowling balls. I bought pretty much the wrong bowking balls before i knew what i was doing. 😂

How did you start your journey to becoming a professional bowler, I've been bowling for almost a year now, and I average 206 in my league right now, but I'm not sure what other to do then just leagues? What compitions did you do to get to where you are?

I need this info on surface badly, because up to now Ive never changed the surface on my ball in this way. I'm a big guy with long arms and legs, and I'm definitely speed-dominant. When I'm practicing on burned-up open lanes, there's enough hook that my high ball speed doesn't cause any issues. But the minute I get on fresh league conditions, getting the ball back to the pocket is a pain in the ass, and my average drops in an ugly way. I already know I'm supposed to slow it down, but it's hard to do it consistently. Even when I'm really trying to bowl slower, I'm 2-3 MPH faster then most of the other guys in league. It's tough. I'm considering hitting my ball with surface because I'm having so much trouble with slowing it down.

Pretty good video! I find it interesting how the drop from 4000 to 2000 grit wasn't as massive as 2000 to 1000. So when you did 360 grit, say you wanted to go back up to 4000 grit, is it as simple as just using 4000 grit? Or is there more steps like say 360-1000-2000-4000. Also would going from 4000-360 be the same as 4000-3000-2000-1000-500-360?

Ideally you would use a ball spinner and bring the ball surface back up to the ideal surface. You can do it by hand but might not have enough pressure to bring it all the way back up. Second question was a great question as well. Ill do my best to hopefully explain this. So there will be a different reaction sanding the ball from 4000 -360 because you’re immediately going to the grit. Sanding the ball by using steps can also create a smoother reaction since you’re doing a little lower surface each time. I hope this makes sense and helps not sure if I typed the best explanation. Start low then work you way back up to at least 2000 to 3000. Using a ball spinner is the most effective way in my opinion.

Would you recommend using lower grit like 500 on medium oil if you are a low rev bowler? I started playing tournaments last year and as soon as i go on medium oil i have huge struggle for a good ball reaction and getting some angle to the pocket.

You can use them again upwards, but it is a very slow process by hand. Best to do it with a spinner or proshop. After 4000, polish.

Ball spinner for Abralon and Siairr pads. If you get TruCut pads you can do it by hand.

If you dont have a spinner by hand works fine as you see in this video, if you do have a spinner then cool but I think here hes showing what you can do in practice to tune a ball at the lanes. The other option is most pro shops charge 5-10 bucks for a surface change. Really its about uniformity and being able to replicate surfaces you like.

YES before league or tournaments not during..... if you dont believe go to ANY pro shop and they will tell you the same

Uk. I have a problem with my bowling ball on lanes with more oil and my problem is tht I can’t get it back in the pocket in time I was actually thinking of goin to my pro shop an puttin a little bit more grit on it until I find the right one but if I get on a lane that has bearly any oil I can get it back in time to get to the pocket

Only during practice. Once the first ball of competition is thrown you cannot change the surface

So I have a pink widow that I use and really enjoy but it’s not reacting like it used to. I am speed dominate around 17 mph. What grit should I use to get the reaction back?

Look at the specs of the pink widow online and it will tell you what it was sanded at or polished at

Tru cut pads cut to true grit the abralon pads are not as good and dont last as long I definitely prefer the tru cut pads

After the game how do you bring back the ball to it’s original surface?

You first need to know what the original grit was. Then you can work your ways backwards to it. For instance, Wes' ball is currently 360 grit. If you want the surface to be 3000 again, you will need to first sand it with a 500. Then wipe the ball down and sand it with a 1000. Wipe it clean again and hit it with 2000. Wipe clean...sand with 3000 and you are done.

What he fails to tell you is once you've started competition it's against the rules to use an abrasive on your ball. But we're talking about the USBC giving a shit about making bowling a real sport.

Imagine needing 2 hands to bowl 🤣. I only have 1 arm and I average 210 on league. Imagine needing all of this fancy shit just to bowl the same score as me. I use alley rental shoes,no resin or any pads. No tape or wrist guard. It's all a waste and/or a crutch.
