Who am I:
My name is Zach. I'm a second-year medical student in Philadelphia. I make videos about medical school, entrepreneurship, and other cool things. I love trying new things and often mess up. However, every time I screw up I usually learn something. Whatever I learn I post either on KZfaq or my website 🌐 (zhighley.com/).
I write a weekly newsletter 💌 (zhighley.com/newsletter/) linking the best things I read, watched, and listened to that week. Not a single person has unsubscribed from this list (yet 😬).

Thank you, Zach. I have used Anki for about two months and one of my mistakes, which I understood thanks to your video, was learning only by creating my own decks. After your video, I tried the existed, created by other people decks, and I see that it works even better for me and my goals. Thank you very much!

Hey Zach I'm a Pre-Med student and I had a quick question on how you take your notes, you said in a video that you get a basic understanding of any material and go back through it by using active learning, do you go through your chapter or chapters and then take the tests or do you skim through it and take the test?

Hi Zach, thank you for the great video! I have a question: I want to enable the anki 2.1 schedular as you advised. Now a window pops up which says: (sorry I have to roughly translate it from my german Anki): If I enable the schedular it will reset all my cards in the learning phase. What does that mean? Willl I have to go through all the cards I have ever learned in anki again or just the ones which are in learning but not the ones in repetition? And is there a workaround to that? Lots of love from Germany - a 4th year medical student studying pharmacology

Hi, I know it's kind of a random question: How did you get the "extra" zone with the cloze deletion option? For me, there is only the text section
@ZachHighley
@ZachHighley 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, that's a valid question and you get into coding to answer it, here is an easier workaround: 1. Download AnKing card type from here: drive.google.com/file/d/1uwoR22hr_4q4eiAO7zdnwWXUSawrDRLL/view?usp=sharing 2. Open the Anki profile you want this new card type in 3. double-click the download 4. You know have the "Cloze-AnKingMaster card" type! 5. Whenever you create new cards use this card type and you will have that 6. if you want to convert all your current cards to have this section you will need to do a deep dive into this video from the AnKing, find the part when he talks about converting card types (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mc1dp7RnutqUeYU.html)

@wesleyschwind9375
@wesleyschwind9375 3 жыл бұрын
You could put them all in the same deck and give each card a tag according to their section (e.g. 2.1, 2.2, 2.3..). You could also create a separate deck for each section and put them all under a master deck. That way when you click the master deck you will review all the cards, or you can expand it to just look at one section

@ZachHighley
@ZachHighley 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Mohammed, I really would suggest *not* setting a time limit. Completing all of your reviews every day is essential for sticking to the algorithm and maximizing your retention. That said, if you want, you can review for 2 hours (set a timer) and then just stop. Those cards will be waiting there for you tomorrow, they will automatically "go to the next day" because they just roll-over. BE CAREFUL (avoid) the "reschedule" option - it will remove all of your learning intervals and just "reschedule" the cards to appear over that amount of days.

The biggest problem is why use flashcards in the first place. I have never used flashcards. I don't understand them. I don't know why anyone would want to use them. First, it takes a long time to write them. Second, it may take a long time to read them and get the answers correctly. Third, they look boring, tiring, tedious and time-consuming. Why not just read a book? In the same time you create and read flashcards you could just read a book. Or, if you are studying something like Physics of Mathematics, you should just solve a bunch of exercises from a textbook. Most textbooks have plenty of exercises for you to practice. All you have to do is solve them. The book author already prepared all the exercises for you, you don't need to write them, unlike flashcards. If you are learning a foreign language you should read as much as possible. Reading is the best way to acquire vocabulary. You consult the dictionary for the words necessary to understand the text. Reading is much more fun, entertaining and engaging than using flashcards. By reading you always see the word in context. Flashcards on the other hand take the words out of context. It is much harder to memorize and understand them. Flashcards are completely inefficient compared to just reading.
