In this video Eric uses Cerrosafe alloy available through Brownells to remove a chamber obstruction in a CZ 75. Cerrosafe is an alloy with a very low melting point under 200°F that can used for everything from casting a chamber of unknown dimensions to removing obstructions as this video covers. This exact method can be used to remove a larger obstruction such as a case head separation in a rifle with the same process. Stay tuned, much more on the way.

Cerrosafe shrinks a little as it cools, then expands again. It is recommended to remove the plug, 30 minutes after the melt solidifies. That is when the plug is typically at it's minimum size, a little less than a tenth of one percent smaller than original chamber size. If you need to take accurate measurements of the plug, wait another half hour & it should be back to actual chamber size. After that it continues to grow a little for the next 20 days. In the end, it ends up about 1/4 of 1% larger than the original chamber. It contains about 8% cadmium, so handle it accordingly.

with a melting point that low I would say that stuff is some kind of lead bismuth eutectic like used in alpha class sub reactors. cool stuff!

Don't buy Cerrosafe from Brownells - it is MUCH cheaper to buy it directly from the manufacturer (Bolton Metals)

I find that I like the convience of being able to place one order from supplies and get everything from one place, but if you were a large shop and needed a lot of it I could see where that would be worthwhile.
@12799MaDeuce
@12799MaDeuce 7 жыл бұрын
Iraqveteran8888 I totally understand that, but Brownells lists it at $46/pound, where Bolton Metals sells it for $15/pound (and if you're local and ask nice, they'll let you pick it up at the foundry to save shipping).

A pound is a heck of a lot of Cerrosafe. I think this block is 12 OZ and I've had it like 10 years...lol
@12799MaDeuce
@12799MaDeuce 7 жыл бұрын
Iraqveteran8888 Ya a pound is a lot, but Bolton's 1-pound (comes in half-pound ingots) is still $10 cheaper than Brownell's half-pound ($25).
@cephasmartin8593
@cephasmartin8593 7 жыл бұрын
Iraqveteran8888 A pound is a heck of a lot? Do you not realize that 12 ounces is only 4 ounces shy of a pound? It's not that much more than 12 ounces, and if you can get a significant discount - why the heck not?!? Just bought a pound from Bolton for $14.80.

Great stuff, but a cheaper solution to the same stuff, just repurposed, is Cerrobend (1lb for 20 bucks). It also used to be called WoodsMetal and Lipowitz Alloy. They used it to put into pipe, so you could bend the pipe without kinking. Now it's been reinvented for gun work. It does a great job BTW, for casting and casing removal.

First generation 9mm Winchester Silvertiop would do the same thing. The jacket material would back into the front of the chamber and prevent the round from fully chambering. As I recall, depending on the pistol, it might take only 50-100 rounds to foul the chamber enough to cause a failure to lock. Instead of a soup spoon, I use a bullet casting ladle to heat and pour the Cerrosafe. Seems to work better for me.
