How to Use Chalk Paint on Fabric with Transfers

Have you been wondering about using IOD transfers on fabric? Wonder no more because IOD stockist, Lynne of ‪@ellenjgoods‬ show you the best way to do it (hint, chalk paint the fabric first!).
She gives some great ideas, including DIY tapestries, custom canvas tote bags, table runners, placemats - you can even use this on the back of a chalk paint fabric chair! And the best part - most of these projects are NO SEW (unless you want to, of course!).

I love this project! I had seen Lynne do this couple of years ago and I made myself a totebag following her instructions and the bag is still in perfect shape. The paint and transfer are still in tact. Love it! Watching this again because Lynne creates fantastic projects and her tutorials are easy to follow. #teamellenjgoods

I’ve applied directly to canvas for a wall hanging. Worked great.

Lol, I applied it to a piece of Drop Cloth that I glued tightly onto a picture that was glued to carboard prob before I was even born, hahaa!! BUT didnt see these tutorials UNTIL I went looking to see if I should seal it or not and what to seal it with before I put it back in the frame...Sighhh, lol!

Worked fine as wall hanging. I wouldn't try scraping it. so works for me.

Before transferring a transfer to painted fabric, to get rid of the bumps and nubs, rub over fabric with a piece of brown grocery bags or fine sandpaper- light pressure! I have painted fabric for years

Can you seal the fabric after applying an IOD Transfer? And, if so, what should you use as a sealer over painted fabric? I love the tote bag Lynne, it's gorgeous. BTW, I saw a lady on KZfaq who applied IOD Transfers to drop cloth that she had cut into pieces. She took the glass out of some old picture frames and then glued the fabric around the glass. Then she applied the transfer onto the surface of the fabric that was held tight around the glass, and it seemed to work really well. On some of the fabric she stamped it first with IOD Stamps using IOD Ink and let it dry before applying a transfer over the top of the stamped fabric, and that looked great too. As she put the fabric back in the old frames, do you think they will last, or not? Sorry about all the questions. Love from Amanda Jones in Australia ❤

I made three tapestries using drop cloth... painted the cloth, sealed it... put the transfer on.. they all were So Pretty! None of them held up, the transfers kept coming off... Thank you for this video! My choice of fabric might have been the problem.

I think if you do a coat of gesso that will stabilize the fabric...gesso it is used on canvas and other fabrics to paint over after the gesso is dry...

Would you gesso the canvas display board first? then add chalk based paint then add transfer then seal (with what(?

We didn't gesso it first, but that was suggested by another commenter. The key would be using a water-based gesso (not oil as that will prevent the transfer from adhering). Seal with a water-based poly - either spray or brush on (Lynne brushed it one). Thanks for watching!

You can however apply transfers to leather and faux leather correct?

Lynne is testing that out for us on some thrift store leather bags soon. :) She's done it on leather cuffs. Her suggestion was to rough the leather up a bit with a fine grit sandpaper under where you want your transfer to be and then apply a polycrylic sealer transfer and then sealer over the whole thing. It would be off-label use, so you should experiment a bit with a scrap of leather you don't care about first.

Lynne did directly onto the chalk-type paint - but you may want to do a water-based sealer over the paint if using something other than chalk paint to ensure good adhesion.

What types of paint can you use on a transfer? Water colors?, acrylic paint markers?, oil paints?

Hi there! We recommend chalk type based paints, but you can definitely experiment with all types to see how they work and what you like best🥰♥ We do recommend sealing your paint before you apply the transfer and also sealing after you've applied the transfer as well😊

Would the paint inlay work differently?

Hi Lynnette! The only thing you would do differently for the inlay is you will need to have wet paint when you apply the inlay. This is considered off label use though, so I am not sure if you would let it dry fully like you would normally, or if you should pull it before it fully dries, as we have not tried this before! If you do, you'll have to let us know how it worked!♥

Hi Theresa, I've never done that myself, but we may have other makers in the IOD community who have! If you ever have a question or would like advice on a project or product, a great place to ask is our IOD tribe Facebook group. Often group members will get comments on a post with advice or encouragement within a few minutes! facebook.com/groups/IODcreativetribe It’s a closed group but members are approved with very little wait time! Others over there may have some advice for paint and transfers on Percale 🥰❤️

@@IronOrchidDesigns I think i found the paper and the how to make it ...still the name of the process i can not find...What i found is that the image is printed on reverse in a plastic sheet...then a glue is apply on the top (back) of the image and that is it...however i can not find the name of the whole enchilada...why the name is important? because with the name i can find the exact information to do my own transfers and stop drooling or/and dreaming on the transfers u sale and that i can not afford... Thanks girls for reaching out to me... blessings to you and yours.

Definitely do NOT heat set a transfer - it will completely ruin it. You might be confusing this with IOD Decor Inks, which you do want to heat set. :) Hope that helps!

Made a wall hanging on drop cloth, it had been painted and sealed several times. After 8 months the transfer started peeling up. Just don’t waste your time!

So pretty on fabric but if u can’t wash it then I feel it’s a waste of time

It depends on the use. For sure would be a waste on an item of clothing like jeans, but it would make a beautiful tapestry or table runner or tote (as Lynne shows). You can spot clean the surface because of the sealer, just not completely submerge it into water. :)
