I have the whole series of the Partridge Family on dvd & the more I watch them the more I notice the colors red, white & blue are used quite often, especially in their clothes, but also sometimes in the room decorations as well. Giving me the impression that this was an all-American, wholesome family back then, in the 70's.

I’m thrilled to have found your channel. I’m a huge fan of set design and will often pause a movie to study them. Actually, I often rematch movies to continue enjoying their beautiful spaces, such as all of Nancy Myers movies. In sitcoms, I am intrigued by the use of color in Sheldon’s and Leonard’s apartment in the Big Bang Theory. For my own apartment however, I couldn’t imagine living with the number of colors and accessories that make sets interesting and dynamic, but I have taken photos of various views in my own apartment, which I find really helps when adding deco or accessories to the decor.

Really interesting. I have a favorite era of film because of the look. I have always assumed it was "Technicolor" that made it that way. Anyhow, it's the early, mid 60's Doris Day, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and the like. Of course, Disney live action movies, Don Knotts, Jerry Lewis etc... Now I'm wondering if 'saturation' is part of it? Alfred Hitchcock had a look all his own. You see that even in B&W, like Psycho. But it really stands out in a film like Rear Window. I could not design a matchstick. I have so many likes and loves it would end up looking like a junk store exploded.

Oh my. Do you know how many times I've chosen a movie to watch based on this "certain" look the colors had back then. I've always guessed it was technicolor too. I even went so far as to check imdb to check how my favorites were filmed and see if it lists technicolor. Most did, but there was another one that slips my mind. I think you're going to like Part 2 if color in the cinema. It's up on this channel now too.

@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane So it's not just me? It's a real thing? Man, I have tried to explain this for years, to family, friends, a random employee in Best Buy, you name it... Most often I get a head nod, a puzzled look, or something like, "Oh, I love Doris Day too" ::eyeroll:: I will watch certain movies based on how I feel. If I'm ill, most definitely Disney! Parent Trap, That Darn Cat, Freaky Friday. I too LOVE the Inn from White Christmas. The house in North By Northwest, OMG, it's a stunning place. ( I was actually in the cafe at Mt Rushmore.) I was 5 at the time and I remember it like it was yesterday- the faces too! I'm 57 now, so to say it makes an impression is an understatement!

@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane Thank you for getting back to me so promptly. I am playing catch-up with your episodes, just about to start with Ep. 4. Marina your last episode featuring fireplaces reminds me of the home my Dad built for us in the sixties. It had the most gorgeous stone at the front entrance (on the exterior with a planter box), that then came into the home's foyer, it also had a planter box, (a large window separated the planter box exterior/interior, and then the stone wall went up a short set of stairs turned the corner into the living room and became a 3/4 wall (in length) fireplace. There were also two other fireplaces in the home that were half the height of the rooms, but, the full length of the rooms. Oh, how I loved that home, it showcased my parents amazing taste in design and decor. P.S. It also had two light/planter boxes at the end of the driveway one on either side with the same stone. Gorgeous! I thought I'd share this with you since you love design.

@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane I knew you would be able to picture it, not many can. I forgot to mention that this stone that came in from outside, up the stairs and into the LR was floor to ceiling, dramatic with vaulted ceiling in LR. I too, love architecture, design and decor, it's in my genes. lol

I think I need to stop being so hung up on having the exact right shade of a colour. I see in these examples that the cinematic designers didn’t have that hang-up. Orange to orangey was dotted throughout a room and beyond, for instance. 💡
@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane
@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane 2 жыл бұрын
Good point. I remember years ago on a design show, Lynette Jennings, who was always a teacher and not just a host, brought up this exact point. She said, "I see you at the stores holding up your paint chips next to fabric, trying to match the shade exactly." She was kind of laughing as she said it. It was an "aha" moment for me. 😊

"Now in this next example, the angle of the camera actually matters..." (05:23) In film and TV production, the angle of the camera "actually matters" all the time. Which is why I want to point out that you've got your camera looking down on you which, in the language of the medium, minimizes you and takes away from your authority on the material....something you definitely do NOT want. Otherwise, great content and very interesting.
