I just messed up my white painted table because so many videos from Ann Sloan didn't warn me about using clear wax first. They indicated to use one or the other. Thank you so much.

Thank you for explaining why we need to use clear wax as well. Everyone says to use both but never the reason.

Having no experience whatsoever with diy furniture makeover, I just went for it and painted a dining table with chalk paint, however the dark wax just did not look right. Your video is a lifesaver! I didn’t realize I should use clear was first. Thank you!

This video actually helped me the most out of any video that I watched for applying dark wax. My question is how long after you paint a piece can you wax it and can you let the clear wax dry completely before you add the dark wax?

OMG this was so helpful! I've just bought a can of sepia wax (basically dark) and was about to apply it directly to chalk paint / wood stain! I have clear wax too so will follow your tips now. I don't have a spare brush so will use a cotton rag. So excited as my Polyvine Taupe wood stain (UK) came up too grey on my bare pine table, so I'm hoping the sepia wax will help warm it up enough to match my beige driftwood effect kitchen cabinets. 🤞

i am so glad you clarified the need for clear wax. i watched a video yesterday and the lady said id always need clear, but she never specified... then i watched another video where they didnt use clear at all. they only used the dark. so i was confused! so i picked up some clear today. do you know about how much clear and dark wax you used on that particular piece? 2tbsp? 4 tbsp?

Thanks for the great tutorial. Everything explained so very well. Is it possible to paint with the dark wax for highlights over a Water-based Benjamin Moore paint? I have a backsplash that was gold but painted it Benjamin Moore Morning Dove. My cabinets are white so cabinet white and the backsplash too white. I wanted to have some type of interest in the design of the tin so I have some contrast. I tried the Magnolia Home Black but when I go to remove what I don't want left on the backsplash design, all the black comes right off. Can you help with what I might be doing wrong, please.

Hi there I have a question about dark waxing. can I do it on a ceramic wall sconce (Roman style sconce) that is not painted? the pieces I have just seem to be white ceramic without any paint added.
@melissawheeler73747 жыл бұрын
I believe the key to whether or not an item accepts wax is whether or not the surface is porous. If the ceramic is glazed I don't think the wax will 'cling' and it will all just wipe off. I found a ceramic trinket box at H4H and it wasn't glazed and it accepted dark wax just fine.

Can u use any kind of paint on the table before applying the clear and dark wax or do you have to use the Anna Sloan paint?
@magicfan4ever8885 жыл бұрын
You DON'T have to use Annie Sloan paint, you can use Lowe's Valspar Chalky Paint, Rust-Olleum, or any brand of Chalk Paint... but Annie Sloan has the best reputation, and are also the most expensive.

If we did clear wax yesterday and obviously it has dried, do we have to reapply the clear before adding the dark wax? We didn’t understand that you needed to do the two processes together
@ShadesofBlueInteriors4 жыл бұрын
Ginger Tandy no need to re apply the clear wax.
@karenflesher75454 жыл бұрын
Why do you recommend clear wax before using the dark wax? I’m wanting to darken the paint chalk paint I used. I painted one chair so far. Will it darken more without clear first?
@ShadesofBlueInteriors4 жыл бұрын
Yes it will. The dark wax will be absorbed and change the color of the paint if used without clear wax. The clear wax acts as a barrier so that you can control application of the dark wax.

How long should one expect wax to cure before attaching hardware to furniture?
@ShadesofBlueInteriors4 жыл бұрын
Tawana Long as long as you wipe off excess, and it doesn’t feel tacky, you can attach hardware right away. If you are concerned, wax typically fully hardens within 24 hours so you can wait till that point if you prefer.

I learn so much from your demos. Your method of instruction is perfect for my method of learning. I do have one question - what does clear waxing before dark waxing do? What is the difference from just dark waxing alone?

I just finished watching "how to dry brush" on your lovely end table. I thought it was very thorough and loved to look. Then on the same piece, you did the dark wax. I'm confused because doesn't this last step of dark wax negate the dry brushing look you did previously?
@ShadesofBlueInteriors9 жыл бұрын
No actually it doesn't... I see what you mean by thinking the dry brush lightens it and then I'm darkening it, but actually What I'm using the dry brushing for is in this case is adding texture and then the dark wax adds warmth and more dimension.
