There are many different approaches to conceptualizing jazz language and the way the great beboppers played. One of these concepts is called "enclosure."
In this video, I dive into the basics of enclosure, how it works, and how you can start incorporating it into your jazz lines!

Easy way to remember: Enclosure = abcd ... Enclosure: 1 note above (a) and 1 note below (b), either chromatically (c) or diatonically (d). Target Note: A note in the chord being (or about to be) played.

The cool thing about the way you describe it is that it’s easy to see why the V chord us often an altered dominant. Your D# is the #5 of the G7. When you approach from below to the maj 7 of C with an A#, it’s the #9 of the G7. Thank you for relating melodic enclosures to the chords in this way. 👍🏻👍🏻

The classically trained musician in me is twitching at the double non harmonic tones with that D-D#-E line. I totally get the jazz theory and understand why this works, but it's so hard to talk myself into that being okay after all of those music theory classes where that was a big no no. Anyway, great video, and this is very useful for better sounding solos for sure. I look forward to applying this to my own soloing!

Everyone explains this (enclosures) using a static harmony or the C major scale. Finally, someone explains how to work on this over an actual chord progression. What I'd next like to know is, how could I practice this over the Coltrane tune Moments Notice?

So you can start from below, THEN go above, and then hit your target note? I've only heard it explained above and below, not below and above. Thank you for being the first person I've heard to explain that. Also, would it be practical to use enclosures while practicing a scale? Or is it more for arpeggios?

Hello, thank you for the lesson! One thing I don't understand, is the exercise you show around 6:00. You say it's in C which is OK for the first enclosure (D-C-B-C), but where do the notes/intervals come from after? It's clearly not just notes from the C major scale after the first one, do you just pick the approach notes by feel?

A Good idea Is Charlie Banacos chromatic approach:12 exercises for all the 4 target notes for all the kind of Chords...Just One Page to study for One year(if you are lucky)....every modern jazz-fusion players play thinking about chord....Gambale,Scott Henderson,Stern,Scofield but also Bill Evans and Wes!the most important thing that lots of players with a rock background and jazz beginners risk to don't understand Is to play not "in position"!

I like what you did with 2 5 1 above and below you have a melody.. I find you learn more using them in a tune- Solar, Dolphin Dance.. Give us examples of chromatic, pevit and enclosure in tunes. It STAYS with you. The idea of using the scale is good because you are learning melodic lines. Barry Harris?

Thank you for your video tutorial,i am learning a lot from it about enclosure.One mistake you could correct is this: you hold C Maj 9,then you say C maj 7,so you would correct it.Otherwise this video is helpful to understand how to play chromatics scales with enclosure.

It's quite likely! Cmaj7 is just the basic chord quality, but you can certainly add extensions on top like the 9th or 13th to add some color

Great video! Why do chromatic notes work over the chords (i.e. playing A# over Dm7)? What's the theory behind this?
@xxczerxx
@xxczerxx 5 жыл бұрын
If the Dm7 is functioning as a II (in key of C minor) then it might be because the chord that preceded it was the V of Dm7 (A7), like in a Rhythm Changes, in which case the A# sounds cool. Having said that, there at a bunch of reasons why an A# could sound good, I actually think my above paragraph is way overcomplicating it. It is best to look at the chords being played, then look at the whole line/phrase underneath to understand what's going on.
@torikenyon
@torikenyon 4 жыл бұрын
They’re not considered notes that “work” over the chords. They’re chromatic passing tones to lead into the notes that do work, the chord tones. It sounds fine because these chromatic passing tones aren’t emphasized or held out, they’re passed over. The point of this style is to connect chord tones together melodically using notes that wouldn’t normally “work” by themselves.

Do you tend to put chord tones on the beats 1 and 3, right?
@Learnjazzstandards

Hi Rodolfo! I don't think there is a hard and fast rule. But for very "by the book" exercises like this, I tend to resolve to a strong chord tone on beat one.

Yeah what was overlooked during the Abersold epoch was the increased chromatic density that bop enclosures can add as well as the insane level of adherence to the progression they insure. Now on the bad side is enclosures guarantee a kind of predictability if over used and they encourage the use of licks. But use of enclosures as well as all the chromatically altered scales now ya talking. But Tabula Rassa not licks

So, how matter how often I study this whole enclosure topic I never seem to use them in my improvs. I don't think I have a target note in mind when I'm actually playing, I'm too worried about using the proper notes of the proper scale. Except for the very end. But not during! I don't know what to do to add enclosures during the course of a solo. Sigh.
