I know this is comment of yours is 4 months old already, but I'm a bit of a landscaping enthusiast... (assuming you still aren't sure where to begin) the first thing you want to do is figure out what kind of an exposure you have. Is it sunny? shady? dry? damp? windy? sheltered? Try to decide what you want to get out of your yard, do you want a space for entertaining? high maintenance? low maintenance? a lawn? Maybe some space for nature? Once you've determined what kind of space you have and what you want to get out of it, that's when you start researching plants. Look up native plants in your area, see if there's any that really stand out to you. Native plants are almost always a sure thing when you want something that will thrive and fill up your space. Non-natives can work too, just make sure they can stand up to your conditions. When you finally get down to planting, you want to plant the long-term investments first. Think trees, screening plants, big shrubs. Getting those in the ground ASAP is most important. I hope this was helpful. Good luck with your new yard :)

I screened off neighbors immediately with switchgrass northwind. This is my 1st year, I just potted them, I hope they come back next year. I live in an apartment and the plants are giving me instant gratification.

I’ve found a slow growing tree that is very nice for screen and wind screen, as well as beautiful shape and color is a blue-tip Juniper. Another nice tree about 25 feet is Blue Arrow Juniper. Deer leave these alone. Deer also do not bother Rosemary (creeping or crawling Rosemary grow huge and are a great foundation); Blue Fescue (Round tufted grass), Dwarf Mugo Pine, Gaura (whirling butterflies), Japanese Bayberry, Coreopsis, Potentilla (Cinquefoil), Euphorbia, Bluestar Juniper (small round tufted bush), Coneflowers, Dwarf Russian Sage (2-4 feet tall), all sorts of DayLillies, Salvia (sage), Scabiosa (Pincushion plant) Agapanthus (Lilly of the Nile), Penstamon, Delphinium, Peonies, Helleborus (Lenten Rose)💖, and Lydia Broom, a drought resistant, compact relative of scotch broom. Cotoneaster does well too as does Spirea, and Low-Grow Sumac bush, and Oregon Grape bush, and Nandina domestica (Heavenly Bamboo), but I net them the first year. Fawns will often taste anything. And any very small seedling or young plant may suffer when it is new to the garden because deer sample everything new. That is how they discover their menu! 😄 Plus pregnant does will turn to most anything during lean times of year. The plants I’ve listed are the plants I don’t worry about now that they have been through several seasons and the deer don’t damage. Other trees and bushes I have to fence for 3 to 5 years until they are bigger. Then I remove the fences. The deer ALWAYS damage arborvitae (Thuja) trees. So I am thinking of removing those or maybe leaving for 10 years to see if they will get hardy enough that the deer are no longer drawn to their soft evergreen foliage. I also have three young Nellie Stevens Holly trees that are fenced for a few more years, because to my surprise, the deer find the young leaves a tender, though prickley, treat. I expect to remove the fences after about 3-4 seasons when the trees should be tougher. I also have a Hibiscus fenced for a few more years. I live in a high desert area, Zone 7a or 8 depending which reference book I consult. The first frost is usually in October, and last frost in May. I can grow dogwood trees (but they may need covering during strong winds.) I have a lot of pines and sequoias. Boxwood plants do fair and better as they toughen up; net them for a few seasons if they are small. Good luck! Stay with it; it gets better as your plants mature. Oh, one last thing: You can order burnet seed, a plant you can use as salad garnish, and plant it in areas away from your main garden. The deer love it for the tender, cucumber flavored leaves. You and the deer can benefit! But plant it far enough away that it dies not draw them to your garden but away from your garden. It is drought resistant, and has deep roots, and spreads easily. It is good for erosion control, but can become invasive in your garden.P.S. How could I forget beautiful lavender? Deer are not interested! 🤣

We have zones in the U.S. based on temps. and plant hardiness. For example plants with a hardiness zone of 5 will not die unless it gets below 0 degrees. Hope that helps. I live in zone 8 so our temps rarely get below 10 degrees F.
