How to Use FOIL to Multiply Binomials - Polynomial

👉 Learn how to multiply polynomials. To multiply polynomials, we use the distributive property. The distributive property is essential for multiplying polynomials. The distributive property is the use of each term of one of the polynomials to multiply all the terms of the other polynomial. After multipling the polynomials, we then simplify the product by combining the like terms and evaluating (add or subtract) them. As we multiply polynomials with more and more terms we often lean on helpful tricks to help us keep the product organized and remember the steps such as FOIL and BOX METHOD.

The question I have always wondered is *why* do we use FOIL method? Why does this method actually work? Okay, let's say that we have (3 + 2)(x + y). Part 1: If we were to add 3 and 2, we'd get 5. So, 5(x + y). Using the definition of multiplication, we'd get (x + y) + (x + y) + (x + y) + (x + y) + (x + y), which yields 5x + 5y. We could essentially apply a shorthand method, which is the distributive property; that is, distributing 5 to each term; hence, 5x + 5y. Part 2: Once again, using the definition of multiplication, we could add (x + y) number of (3 + 2) times. It will work like a dimension. (x + y) + (x + y) + (x + y) yields 3x + 3y (x + y) + (x + y) yields 2x + 2y. Therefore, 5x + 5y. Looking at it this way only shows a pattern; it does not explain *why* it actually does work. I always find it difficult to find an concrete reason.
