In this video I'll show you how to use the Fruity Limiter for compression in FL Studio 20. If you're using FL studio, I recommend using the Fruity Limiter for compression instead of the Fruity Compressor. The Fruity Compressor is an older plugin and doesn't give you the same visual feedback that you get with the Fruity Limiter. Once you learn the principles of compression (which you'll learn in this video), you can apply them to any compressor.

Compression is such a powerful tool but it took me a couple years before I fully understood how to use it properly. Personally I use the M compressor from Melda Audio and TDR Kotelnikov a lot (both free). Really though if you learn one you can use any compressor and get almost the same results. I use Fruity Limiter more for sidechaining than anything else haha. However the visual feedback on Fruity Limiter is very much appreciated and might be a better place to start if you're just beginning to play with compression.

I've watched quite a few of your FLS tutes recently and they are very good and clear. I hope you continue and I hope the guys at Image Line give you some recognition. While you've got competition from the likes of In the Mix (who is excellent) there are loads of channels with much worse content that are bizarrely popular and they sometimes have promos and giveaways that make them even more popular, which seems a bit unfair to me when people like you are producing better videos but don't yet have the follower count. Best of luck in building a following. You'll get there eventually.

The simple way I sidechain kick and 808 is to go into the envelope settings of my 808 sample and nudge the attack a little bit. So it creates space for the kick to hit. Is that okay?

You can’t hear the difference in the examples? It just depends on how quickly you want the compressor to kick in or release

@@AnotherMonster First: thanks for answering :D And no, not really that much. I understand what it's doing, but just can't think of a purpose or an example where changing the attack or release would be useful. Greetings from Germany and thank you for your videos, I enjoy them a lot :)

@@bruellbart2380 you could use a compressor kind of like a transient shaper (on a kick sample for example) and that’s when the attack and release really become useful

Attack and release are useful for fine-tuning loops with sharp transients. e.g. in a drum loop you sometimes want the kick and snare to remain loud, clear, and with a "thud" that works with the other percussive elements (they get glued together) once the loop is compressed, so you'd use a slightly longer attack so that the click of kick gets through before the volume is ducked; for so-called "punchy" drums. If you use a short attack on a drum loop, the kick might end up sounding too quiet, unnaturally clicky and thin, because the compressor will clamp down on the volume "too quickly" if you use a short attack. With things like bass loops, altering the attack and release can make a sound more rounded and fat (slow attack) or more "plucky" (fast attack), much like the attack and release functions for synth oscillators. You can learn this by experimenting with quite extreme settings on particular loops. (With medium settings, most drum loops sound better after a bit of compression, but if you go super-short or long with attack and release, the loop will sometimes lose all its power and sound unnatural, because the kick and/or snare gets affected more than the hi-hats, or vice versa.

You have to set the ceiling all the way up and the limiter's attack all the way down (0ms) to completely bypass the limiter, according to image line. From the manual: NOTE: To use the Compressor or Limiter in isolation, turn the Limiter CEIL or Compressor THRESH to their maximum value respectively. In the case of the Limiter also set ATT to 0. Later on they affirm this by saying: NOTE: The limiter section can be effectively bypassed by turning the ceiling (CEIL) to max and attack (ATT) to minimum.
@_BangDroid_
@_BangDroid_ Жыл бұрын
I read that too recently but it's weird, because when I turn the limiter attack to 0 I'm getting an audible distortion that I don't get when I leave it at the default 2ms. The only really audible on something clean like a sub bass
