I didn't realize Gimp uses layers like Photoshop. I've always been intimidated by layers but you make it much easier to understand. You don't assume that we know everything and I appreciate that.

Hi, can you create more GIMP tutorials? You have a perfect pace where you don't go too fast. It would be great to see GIMP basics that explains layers, and how to create a product logo/label and how to manipulate photographs.

I've always used photoshop. On my work computer I run cs6 and on my laptop some very old version of elements. I was about to go buy another version of elements and remembered GIMP. Your video convinced me to learn GIMP and skip elements. It really doesn't seem all that different... other than the price. :)

Thank you for this. I've used Corel PhotoPaint for about 14 years, because my friend gave me a copy of it. Since I got my Windows 10 machine, I've been creating graphics on my old XP, then saving them to a flash drive so I could load them onto my new one, because I couldn't find a similar graphics program that I could run on it. When someone pointed out GIMP to me, I installed it, but was so confused by it I was about to give up trying. Your tutorial has taken away my apprehension. It'll be a while before I achieve that same level of comfort as with my old system, but this is now my new graphics program!

You should like Gimp. It gets easier the more you use it. Does not have as nice of a user interface as PhotoPaint...... If you are into artistic design, you may like Krita too.

Wow! I am impressed. I have been watching GIMP videos for the last few days and this is by far the best beginner video I could find. Clearly explained and ideal pace for a newbie. Looking forward to watching more. I don't know about others, but I have to make notes as well or I won't remember the steps. Would be great to find a tutorial that has video as well as written steps or perhaps I am asking for too much. Can anyone recommend a good book something like "GIMP for Dummies". ¡Gracias Amigos!

As a former Photoshop user, I sometimes complain about GIMP because of some of the weird quirks about it. But, the truth is, I keep going back to it, because it's probably the next best thing to Photoshop, paid or otherwise. For that matter, it may be better than Photoshop by now for all I know, because I haven't used PS since CS3, and I have no idea how it's changed since then. And the amount of freedom that you have with GIMP compared to something like PS makes it a whole lot more convenient.

Lol I made a big mistake. I thought this was a tutorial for the plastic twine stuff I know to be called gimp that you can make keychains and bracelets with. I decided to stick around and learn about this GIMP too and make it the new thing I learn today (I am trying to learn something new everyday this year). I hope this isn't a program I have to pay for. I didn't hear you mention anything about cost but I am going to double-check on the site before I download it. I really do want to learn more about art programs and how to use them so maybe this will lead me to a new learning rabbit hole. I made a mistake choosing this video but it's looking like it will end up being a good mistake! Watching this video definitely has me wanting to play around with this program and you do a great job of explaining and instructing. Even though I don't do a lot of art this way, I am still surprised I have never heard of this problem. It seems like it would be pretty popular if more people knew it existed.

I have used both Photoshop and Adobe, this is a great program, but it does have its own learning curve. I still like photoshop better, perhaps because I have used it more, but, I hope to use this as I can't afford the cost of the other programs. Sigh. There are a good many things missing in this program, and a bit harder to navigate, but it does the trick for good printable images etc. Thanks for the tips on getting used to GIMP:) Cheers!

I have been using Corel Draw Paint, Photo Shop and and Pain Shop Pro since the the beginning of photo editing on computers and I must say GIMP is the right name for that program as it is indeed the cripple of photo editing... Horribly user unfriendly (why do everything so differently from other photo editing programs?) and it can not handle RAW pictures from neither my old Fuji or Nikon 3D professional DSLR camera without distorting the colors and contrast ratio.

I think your video is very simple to follow if all goes as planned, however there are things that seemed to arise as I was following along that frustrated the hell out of me. For instance, when I added a text then wanted to move it, I clicked in the white area of the texted layer to identify which layer I wanted to move but when I went to the area to move it, once I clicked inside the dotted area, it would change to the background layer.

Thank you for the very helpful and informative tutorial!!!! Wonderful. We wrote a children’s book and hired an illustrator for the pictures in the book. We want 100% ownership on all copyrights involved in our future books so we want to create all of our images. We are not artist but we do take beautiful pictures. We know that we have a lot to learn since we don’t have any artistic or graphic design background. We were thinking about converting our photographs into illustrations/cartoons and then adding layers/images/backgrounds to create a whole picture that coordinates with the literature/text in our books. We prefer the hide and seek type children books. There are a lot of images on these pages that one or two photos can’t illustrate. We have to add a lot of images/layers etc. We have to stay within the trim sizes of our books which is 7”x10” or 8”x10”. All images have to be in at least 300 Dpi, PDF’s have to be optimized, JPEG’s, transparent objects and layers have to be flattened in native file before publishing, if the book uses bleed then images or elements that bleed to the edges of the pages of our manuscript has to be uploaded as a PDF, PDF’s must be optimized, plus all the other fancy elements are involved. I am not sure if it’s even possible for us to convert photos into illustrations for children books using Software like GIMP or others and staying within the required Trim sizes among other requirements. Any recommendations or places that you can guide me to for help? Thank you in advance!

Idk, seem lots more work to do simple editing and creating fotos than picmonkey which is (for the moment) very simple to use. However, picmonkey is changing their whole design and made it more complicated to use, much like how Google Plus ruined youtube. Picmonkey should have left their old design alone and just added whatever new tools they wanted to add to that design. Nothing complicated about that IMO. Once the option to "switch to old version of picmonkey" is gone, I'm done with them. I may start using GIMP and that's why I'm here. I do not mind paying a photo editing website because I want to be left alone to do my work WITHOUT ANNOYING ADS interfering. Picmonkey "was" once the best and far easier to use than GIMP and was worth every penny of $7.99 a month (or $40 per year). I'm going to miss the fun I had there.
