Very useful video indeed. I was under the impression that Hide My Email addresses could be used only to reply to emails and not initiate them. But, from your video it seems that one can send a new email from such an address.

Explained very good. If I did this more than once for different reasons and contacts I can envision that I will get very confused. It is a good option though.

I started using HME recently and it's really cool, combining HME and iCloud aliases made me not needing multiple email accounts anymore.

Gary, you are missing two very important aspects of this service: 1. it hides your Apple ID. Lots of people use their actual Apple ID, which is an e-mail address, for everything. So they are sharing 50% of the information needed to break into their account with everyone and their dogs. 2. it makes it harder for the big data collection companies to create a profile of you.

Gary, nice - I use on my catalina iMac via iCloud. You didn't go over using iphone/ipad :( - I am inundated with spam and am trialing SpamSieve - any comments on SpamSIeve? my mac mini and MacBooks are using Monteray. My iMac fusion drive broke only the SSD portion works, I have all data on external HD. I followed your other video to remove space from SSD (boot drive), but still not enough space for Big Sur. If I try to install Big Sur from image downloaded to external HD, I get an error in the middle of the process. Any hints ? - I look forward to your daily videos.

Hi Gary, it’s a nice feature with two major flaws. 1. It’s not directly accessible by in Settings. 2. When I generate a new hide-my-email in Settings, I cannot use that email address as the From when creating an email. This is a big limitation. A hide-my-email address can only be used as the From when generated at the moment I create an email. But this lacks the option to choose a generated address. Apple, you’re almost there. You can do it!

Another approach, if apple still gives you 3 aliases, you can permanently hide your apple-id account from the world and use aliases instead, one for personal, one for business, one for junk. Then create a rule on icloud account for the junk, and send them directly to the junk folder. If you are trying a new service or don't feel comfortable using your personal email for a website, then use the junk alias email, this will direct it to the junk folder, you can then later, if you trust the site, update the information to your personal email on the site you sign up. If you only have free icloud storage and you are concern of running out of quota because the junk folder is getting spam, the junk folder clears emails automatically that are 30 days or older, so you should be fine.

Apologies if you covered this and I missed it, but is there a way to identify the original recipient associated with a Hide My Email-generated address? Say for example that I start getting unsolicited marketing emails that are being sent to an address generated by HME. That would be an indication that the original recipient added that address to a mailing list that was then sold/shared to others. Is there a way to back-trace that address to the original recipient, so that I can identify the original “culprit” and track how far and wide the address is distributed over time?

Hi Gary. I wonder if you could help. I can set up new emails in iCloud preferences as you describe. However, when I go to write an email in Mail i do exactly as you say, insert the addressee first, then go to the from box. However, the 'from' box only gives me my gmail address, iCloud and me options on the drop down list. The hide my email option isn't on the drop down list. I have an iCloud+ account and when I check on iCloud and on my phone all of the newly created hide-my-email addresses are present but I can't use them. I only use my gmail address and not an icloud address. I am using Monterey 12.0.1 on a 2021 M1 air.

Some spam filters look to see if the "from" address is in your contact list or not. If you use a "hide-my-email" address and they respond, will the spam filter believe it's spam??

Is there any way to use the Hide My Email address you already created to send a new email with that address, IF you don't have macOS Monterey 12.1? That is the question now that I have. I have 11. something and not Monterey 12.1 but need to reply back to an email with my hidden email address but cannot figure out how to do that. :(

What if you are part of a paid iCloud+ family plan? It was working fine for me when I was paying for 50gb/month. Just changed to my partner's 200gb iCloud+ for family plan (and I see the extra 165gb we haven't used yet), but the Hide My Email has stopped working (on a particular website). At ~9:20 you note this... which is what I was attempting to do. And the "Hide My Email" does show up in the Apple Mail as a choice; however, manually adding isn't a choice, no + sign. I wanted to use it on a site that is going to relentlessly pursue me with annoying offers (I'm sure, it's a vacation site;-) and I just wanted to "just simply" check on a couple things before the "are you sure?" "sorry you left?" "Can we help?" Emails. So, a little squirrelly as it appears to still be available on Apple Mail, but it's not showing in the iCloud (on the mac). Is this also just an iPhone thing? It's July 2022.

Hi Garry, I don't know how but I hide my e mail on my closest friend's email address. So I deactivated and reactivated it but still it is with a new address, not my real one. What to do. I realized this when I updated.

I have iCloud+ subscription but as I click on system preferences - Apple ID - hide my email - options I get window with spinning wheel but after about 15sec it closes and nothing else. Great video Gary. If you happen to read this. I have 2 questions: 1. I recently sign up for Chat-GPT using hide e-mail which forwards to my Gmail. However, the sign-up process also needs two-factor authentication and requires my smartphone. And ask me to verify registration through an email that they send to my email. But the thing is I never receive it in my Gmail. Later it doesn't allow me to log into the website although I use the correct username which is my Gmail and password-- citing "authentication fails". I’ve been using alias addresses for years to avoid sharing my actual email address. What is the chief advantage of this method over using alias addresses?

I have Monterey and iCloud+, and have set up Hide My Email for my iCloud account. When I select "Hide my email" on the "From" dropdown in Apple mail on my Macbook Pro, I get a popup that says "Got to Hide My Email setting and change your Forward To address to one that is set up in the Mail App", and do NOT get a fake email address like you show in your video. What does that mean?

The main issue with "Hide my email" is that if you create the email directly on the site you're signing up for or in the settings, it won't appear in your "From" list. That is, you will not be able to send e-mails to the company using the email created; you will only be able to reply. I found this out the hard way when I needed to contact support for one of the sites I used "Hide My Email" on. As long as Apple doesn't add the created emails to the "From" list, either directly on the website where you registered or in the settings, "Hide my email" is useless to me.

By using a different hide-my-email for every site your exposure to data breaches and dark web explotation are signifcantly reduced.

How do you change the address of the hidden email once you’ve already sent an email out? For example, I sent an email to the recipient and the recipient knows that email comes from me i.e. who is discovered that I sent it how can I then change that email address in a sense unknown again.?
