How to Use Increase Decrease Arrows in Excel

In this video we have a look at how we can insert symbols in Excel, copy those symbols using CTRL + C and then paste the symbols in our custom number format type field. In this video we use up arrows and down arrows (increase/decrease) to show the change between data sets based on percentages outlined. Negative numbers show with a down arrow and positive numbers show with an up arrow. We also show you how to use conditional number formatting within custom number formatting using square brackets.

This is good but when you use this formula, you will still get a decrease/increase icon when there's no change. the 0% will show either red or green. I dont know how to fix it.

I understand your question. All you need to do is add another semi-colon at the end of your statement in the custom format box and just put %0.00. If you want to just turn the text yellow, then you would be able to do the same thing as the positive and negative values [yellow] %0.00. Try it out and let me know how it works.

it has been more than 15 years since I used excel in this "in depth" method, usually using it for quick home or travel budgeting. I'm no longer on the outside of that conversation :) I need to get back into the field. nerds make the world go 'round

excellent series however in this video i have a suggestion, kindly note green and Red text needs to be captured in Sq Brackets else it errors( Excel 2007) , in your Video the same is not mentioned nor well visible.

I tested this one out within the confines of custom number formatting it won't work. One idea you can use though (if you're not interested in using conditional formatting) is to create a new column just to the left of the value you would like to change and just make it equal to that cell. Go to custom number formatting on that cell and put in is: [green]▲"";[red]▼"";"". This would essentially had the value in that new column and make only an arrow green or red based on the cell value to the right.

+Denis Grammakov yes you can use the arrows that are available in conditional formatting. Keep in mind this method also allows you use a ton of different characters through the windings font!

I got that too at first, but try to copy this [Green]▲0.00%;[Red]▼0.00% and paste is directly on the format options that did it for me. Hope it works!

Does anyone know what the up arrow at the beginning of a formula means? The formula (I did not write) looks for averages over time (monthly volume), but does not take into account varying number of days in the range of months under review. Here is a formula I am trying to work with: ^IFERROR(INDEX(INDIRECT("'"&$B314&"'!$A:$BB"),58,20)/(INDEX(INDIRECT("'"&$B314&"'!$A:$BB"),21,20)+INDEX(INDIRECT("'"&$B314&"'!$A:$BB"),25,20)),) I understand the operatives within the formula but just have never seen the "up arrow" at the beginning. Thanks in advance!

The up arrow actually adds the up arrow character to the output in the cell. It's just saying if a number is positive, place an up arrow before the value.

@@Bradedgardotcom thanks for your response. I figured out why it was being used in the workbook I saw it in; formulas in other worksheets said to "go look for the carat" and execute the function. So, it was just being used as an identifying character. Thanks again.

I cannot add the arrows as a custom category in Format Cells. CTRL + B or V (couldn't hear) does not work. Am I doing something wrong? I am using Excel 2010.

Hi Cara As long as you pasted the symbols into a cell and then used CTRL + C to copy them, once you get back into the custom number format screen you then use CTRL + V and that will paste the symbols for you.

Dear Sir, I watched your video and tried the steps you should many times exactly, but every time I finish the equation in the custom format cell and click okay it tells me that microsoft excel can not accept this form and that I should use one of the forms they have listed, I am sure I did all the steps accuratly, could you tell me why this trick won't work for me?

+Food Factory just in case you did not achieve yet and/or for other come across same issue. While om the Symbol screen; you need to select Font > SimSun and Subset>Geometric Shapes and select the symbol. This should work.

If you have a number pad on one of your devices, in windows use alt+30 for the ▲ and alt+31 for ▼. Make sure your num lock is selected on your keyboard. Otherwise you just need to make sure that the font you are using in that cell is able to display that symbol.
