instead of using micron or brush, there is a tool in between micron and brush which is dip pen. it feels like micron but can make various line thickness. You need to dip your pen just like a brush but it release ink slowly unlike brush...

Try a brush pen. Its the closest you'll get. They aren't dip pens but really good flexible markers.

Though it is expensive and harder to control. Plus you spend more money on it since in order to have a high quality dip pen you also need high quality ink.

It seems she already has the ink. And you don't need to spend a lot for a dip pen and you can get quality nibs for a fair price. They aren't too bad. A couple of bucks a piece to maybe $10ish. I got one online from TPK (The Postman's Knock) and I love Love Love her nibs and the packing was fun😊. They can run fast. But still a good suggestion since she's already playing with the inks.

And if she's right handed i have an oblique dip pen I'd send in exchange for a nib from that same website. I bought mine brand new but realized before it arrived i didn't need because im left handed. So i dont use it never have. Hangs on my wall with the paint brushes i don't use either😆

Hi .im Brenda and I am new to watercolor so I have lots to learn. I found you on U Tube last week and since then I have learned so much from your awesome tutorials .You really are good at what you do .I love everything about you.Your videos look like they are done by pros .A few things I love is the way your music adds to the mood it does not scream at me or overwhelm the whole video so I can hear what you are teaching. The camera angles are interesting too. loved how your face popped out from behind the row of ink bottles. Also, ..Your voice sounds soo soothing plus what you say is intelligent and well thought out. .I can tell you put a lot of work into your presentations and it shows , So far I have loved every video I have watched. Lastly, I think you are a beautiful ,classy lady and you really ROCK a red dress.!!!!!!! p.s. I would love to see you without glasses for face shape and eye color.

I love using dip pens made for manga (they make great, crisp lines). There's a steep learning curve to use them, but make lovely effects once you figure it out (It's best to practice a few lines and shapes on scrap paper, I've learned that the weight and texture of the paper has to be played with, to avoid the ink bleeding, which happens easily!) I often use acrylic inks in a certain color, to complement the color theme of my paintings, like blue or purple. Sepia and Burnt Sienna/Burnt Umber are my favorite inking colors, tho. ;3

Carrie, do you ever use colored inks? I'm really curious how it compares to watercolor and gouache in application, opacity, and lightfastness but alas, it's hard to find videos of illustrations with colored inks and not simply black ink with another medium.

You should try using either Sumi or Chinese calligraphy ink. They come in both a stick form and a pre-mixed liquid form, they're waterproof once dry on paper, and they're literally designed specifically for watercolor. They can sometimes have some sheen to them, but it's usually fairly uncommon and once dry you can gently wipe over it with a cloth to remove most of it. The look of them also closely resembles the Micron pen ink formulation. I haven't experimented with it myself yet, but I _have_ also heard you can let the ink dry in pans and re-activate it later with a brush and some water so that you have an opaque black to put in a travel palette that bonds to the paper you're painting on, but I'm not quite sure.

Okay, I love you but I have to say this. I noticed at 0:35 you were keeping your pens upright. It's not good to keep your micron pens, or any pens, upright like that in jars!! The ink in the pen will run in the bottom and your pens will dry out faster. Please please pleaseee put your pens in a pouch before they run out!!!

Nice tips on the ink, THANKS! Never used it with watercolor before. Pens yeah, even sharpies! Lines spread more over paper that has been worked on because that's the external sizing on every watercolor paper being "activated" by water, that's why. Felt my hand cramped when I saw how you grab pens and brushes, ouchie!! You know you are losing one level of control by refusing to use the last falange of your thumb?

I found out the hard way the when the manufacturer says permanent it could mean that it will not smear when dry and you can paint over it, or it means that it will not fade over time and it will smear when painted over the dry ink. Without testing you can't be sure which definition the maker is using.

I hate Higgins, it's inconsistent and clumpy (clogs my quills), but the best inks, Dr. Ph. Martins and Winsor & Newton are quite pricey. If you want something a bit more on the affordable side that sits between Higgins and the higher end, Speedball has some very nice blacks and are priced decently for volume. Higgins is the worst.

You might have better control over line if you changed your grip which looks rather awkward...ie , use the tip of the thumb + first 2 fingers and you can use the pinky to keep a constant height from the paper and you can see what you are doing. If you did your normal grip at the myron barnstone school or any classical training class you would be put on the impaling wall ! You keep most of your hand off the paper with the old school method. Also have a look at how japanese sumi e painters hold their brush ; they learn not to strangle it. Cheers.

Watercolor Misfit ahhh ok, and I love the "Faber Castel PITT brush pen" and also "Micron brush pen", so cool, love the difference type of line it can produce and don't have to dip into ink, less messy. But sometimes it hard to use cause I am of a heavy hand writer, so I have to press lightly to make a thin line which is hard. (lol sorry for my bad English)

I have been using some Water Brush Pens from Ohuhu for about 2 months now. I got them from Amazon, set of 6 tip sizes for $9.99 and they work great, especially for watercolor 1/2 pans when I want to play around with some new ideas or color combos. They are harder to control the water/paint mix when doing fine detail, so I rely on brushes when the water mix is critical.

Thank you, Carrie! This cleared a lot up for me. I also ink my drawings first but often end up going over with more ink after the other media I've used. I wondered if this was a waste of time, if there was a better way to do it, but it sounds like a common idea if you want your black crisp in areas after painting over it with watercolor. Also, do you have an email address where I could send questions that aren't public? Thanks! I've learned so much from you! ☺️
