Today I take a drive in a new Subaru with Eyesight Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering Assist. This system is currently standard on 2020 Subaru Legacy, Outback, and Forester, and will surely work its way across the line in years to come.

I just got a 2022 Outback, and I find the eyesight system to be amazingly good. I had a Hyundai with a similar system, and I thought that was system was decent and was worried that the Outback wouldn't be as good, but it turned out to be even better. Granted, my Outback has adaptive cruise, which my Hyundai didn't, but still, you can tell that the Subaru is more on the task of lane centering. We recently drove 50 miles on the interstate and 90% of it was the car driving, to and back. The one thing that I notice Tesla does and the Outback doesn't is if there is a car in the right lane, when passing, the Tesla will inch to the left a bit like a driver would, while the Outback stays dead center. And it does a good job of staying dead center, but you can feel it fighting you when you try to inch to the left and give the car to the right more room. I wish there was a switch, like the adaptive distance switch, that you could toggle to adjust the centering on the fly.

Knowing my wife she'll probably have the Lane Centering turned off and will get to the point of loving the Adaptive Cruise Control. Yeah, it is quite impressive. I recently got the 2021 Subaru Legacy and all highway driving is a breeze. The only thing I need to do is change lanes to pass. I like too that if it disconnects in the middle of a turn, it'll actually hold its degree of turn so you don't go swerving off to another lane after it disables. I absolutely love to be able to sit back and let my car do all the work

I had the ProPilot Assist in my Nissan for nearly 2 years now and absolutely LOVE IT. This is pretty much the same thing but Subaru seems to be just slightly more conservative with it, or it could just be southern California roads, which are terribly marked. The advantage with Subaru is it seems to be a lot cheaper. I had to purchase the absolute top trim level in my Nissan to get it. It isn't self-driving but it still makes driving so much easier. As long as you have one hand on the wheel you should be safe because it will notify you immediately when it shuts off. But for long trips it's great so you're not having to constantly adjust the steering wheel and therefore greatly reduces the tediousness of the task and it is a dream in stop and go traffic. Sometimes my Nissan doesn't always take sharper corners correctly but I think that is by design so the driver doesn't get too comfortable.

Really considering a Forester - How is the lane keep/centering assist functioning in night? btw I know that it can detect the eyes/activity and if you seem to be fallen asleep it will activate but what does it to later with the car, like does it stops or does it narrow you to the side of the road and stop that I know VAG-cars do? Thankz man!
@CarDietrich
@CarDietrich 3 жыл бұрын
I have not used the Lane Centering Assist (as is standard on 2020+ Forester) at night, but I would assume it works fine. I currently drive a 2020 Impreza that has the Lane Keep Assist (not as fancy) and it seems to work pretty much the same at night as it does during the day. You are not quite correct about the Forester detecting your eyes/falling asleep. If you get a Forester Touring, you get the "Driver Focus Distraction Mitigation System," which gives you an infra-red camera that detects if the driver's eyes are on the road and will give you an audio/visual alert if it thinks you aren't looking at the road. It does not have the ability to stop the car or pull it over or anything like that, and again only the Touring model has this feature. The Lane Centering Assist will cease to function if you take your hands off the steering wheel, and it will prompt you to put your hands back on the wheel. Of course all new Foresters come standard with the EyeSight safety system that has the ability to bring the car to a stop with emergency braking if it detects an obstacle, but as of right now a Subaru does not have the ability to pull itself over and stop on the side of the road on its own accord.

The latest Subaru Outback models have a Speed Limit Sign Detection system so could you, please, check the following for me (us?): You drive on a freeway at 110kph, switch on the active cruise control and set it to the actual 110 (so, say, 113 on the car speedo), the car in front sits also at indicated 113 and your Outback follows it. Then there is a 60kph sign, the car in front DOES NOT slow down. What will your Outback do? Slow down or follow the other car right into a radar speed trap? Also, you are in the US so it could be a bit different there, do the latest Outbacks ACOUSTICALLY indicate school zones, speed cameras etc?

I've had two Subaru's now with this system in it. The cruise following distance feature is great. but the "Lane Centering" feature is in my opinion a gimmick. It can't do the job with anything approaching consistency. In my opinion, I don't want the car to do 10% of the driving. If I'm going to drive, then I'M going to drive. Id hate to "Get Used" to driving with these "Features". I can't help but think it makes you less attentive in a situation where you need to be fully attentive. I played with it for a while mainly because it was there. But it stays turned off virtually 100% of the time. It wouldn't matter to me one bit if the feature was not there at all. Again, the cruise following distance feature has been great. I also like many of the other features of adaptive cruise, like the down hill breaking that keeps your speed on hills. I can seriously do with out the constant beeping when the car thinks i'm too close to a lane line. Going around curves, I often cut to the inside or outside on purpose. Ill drive my car thank you very much, I don't need an idiotic AI system beeping in my face constantly.

I’m driving a 2021 cross track loaner from the dealership. And I discovered in a very uncomfortable way that when switching lanes using the wheel centering system, that the system will resist and pushback. This presents a potential accident situation. Because if you the drive find it necessary to suddenly switch lanes to avoid an accident and the system counter reacts/resist, then obviously you’re in some kind of danger, that could have maybe been avoided with the system off. My second concern is that, when you do attempt to switch lanes with the system on, are you also running the risk of doing damage to the rack and pinion over time because the system resist/makes it difficult to do so?
@CarDietrich
@CarDietrich 2 жыл бұрын
Two things: push the steering wheel button on the right side of the steering wheel to toggle the system on and off if you don't like it. If the system senses you are doing what you are doing intentionally (IE a swift emergency maneuver) it will not intervene. As far as damaging the power steering system, the steering assist is electric so there is pretty much no chance of damaging it by fighting with the Lane Keep Assist. It won't fight you that hard anyway.

Correct, the Lane Centering can only be engaged when the adaptive cruise control is on and engaged. The adaptive cruise on the Subarus has the ability to bring the car to a complete stop, so you can use it in town with the lane centering if you desire. The car goes down the highway like a snake, going from the left to the right constantly. It does better in heavy traffic because it follows the car ahead, but on a lonely interstate hwy, it fights me all the time because it insists on meandering.. I just finished a 1600 mile road trip and my hands were fatigued from fighting this wandering car. I complained to the dealer today and the retort was "just turn it off". Duh! I paid over $35,000 for this car... it should work as advertised.

Just got my 2021 Crosstrek and found lane-centering superb on well-marked highways with or without a car following. It needs well-defined lines on either side of the vehicle between which to center. Works well on most gradual curves. Perhaps the setup is different on the legacy than a Crosstrek or perhaps there is something wrong with your eyesight that might be remedied by the dealer. At least on my vehicle, it worked as advertised. Its not autopilot or a Tesla, but does the job for me when I am on a longer highway drive.

I should add that adjusting the adaptive cruise to maintain the max distance between cars gives it the ability to map out the lines ahead of it, and in my experience worked best with maximum following distance.

You're probably not driving the car in the center of the lane, so you're fighting with it. People have a tendency to steer right because they sit on the left and have a mental difference between where they think the center of the car is and where it actually is. When you see another car, you have a visual reference so you're tracking the lane better. This is all lane centering systems: rest your hands on the wheel, let it do what it wants to, and only intervene when there's a problem.

i don’t know what’s going on with yours but my 2022 crosstrek is kept in the dead center. I’m amazed by it.

Wow it doesn’t work very well because of all the times it turns itself off.

In all honesty that was one of the very first Subarus with that feature, I have a 2021 model Legacy with it now and it works much better on that car. Not sure if they updated the software or what but that's what it is.

On and off, on and off...what use is it. It would require the driver to really listen for the bell and then look to see if it is on or off. Ummmm, not efficient/consistent, takes my attention away from the road to look at the icon. I have this car and am realizing all the technology is sub par. Im disappointed. I bought this car for ALL of the technology/safety features, but it appears all of it needs a serious update and the glitches need to be worked out. You would think since there is a class action suit against Subaru for the 2018-2019 Navi system that they would have corrected the problems and not used cheap IT folks to design the software/hardware

Also, in JDM cars, you can use it WITHOUT adaptive cruise control on

@@Goosetrain123 The 2020 model is the first to get the lane centering. Before it was just lane assist. And the car still has lane assist when cruise control is turned off. It just won't keep you in the lane consistently like it does when you have cruise control on
