Benny explains how creating language islands, based on your personal needs or interests, is a solid way to build confidence and get speaking when you start learning a language.
Using these topics as a focus will help you reach fluency quicker, as you're able to talk about your islands in depth, and with confidence.
Read a full blog post on the topic (which includes examples and pro tips to build your language islands) here: www.fluentin3months.com/langu...

I've been doing this for years. It's extremely useful to improve your speaking quickly.

I am getting myself prepared to create a crash course for fellow Sri Lankans in teaching how to speak English quite fast and naturally, and this helps in doing so. As Benny goes deeper into creating and having one's own word arsenal, that includes all sorts of lexicon in any given subject. Thanks Benny!

I've done this but in reverse. Industry-specific terminology, to be specific. I've had jobs using a few of my languages, software support in my case, mostly in Portuguese. File, as in a computer file, is 'arquivo' in Brazil but 'ficheiro' in Portugal. I say "in reverse" because I had to have enough fluency just to be able to talk and explain things to customers in their own language.

Very helpful, useful video, and a great analogy. I’m trying to learn Icelandic and love playing the guitar, so my task now is to learn vocabulary around that topic. Thanks.
