Buffing up a matchlock samurai's melee stat to use them as proper line infantry is honestly not something I'd have thought of. Thanks for the idea

For both gameplay and historical reasons, I think Shogun 2 made a mistake shoving matchlock units so deep into the tech tree. As you said: by the time you get matchlock units as a non-Otomo clan, it really doesn’t matter at all except for the spectacle. I’ve downloaded two versions of a mod called “Earlier Matchlock Recruitment” in order to get access to guns earlier and I’ve been having a lot of fun with it. Getting access to guns at Attack by Fire rather than Gunsmith makes a huge difference. One of the two versions of the mod also lets all trading ports give access to Imported Matchlocks and I think it’s def a pretty unique change to the game. I went from basically never seeing a gun unit from the ai to regularly seeing 1-2 per army and it makes battles a bit more interesting tactically. Do recommend trying mods, I think the improvement to shogun 2 is worth it.

Yup, sadly that's the way they implemented it. But I guess they probably didn't expect people to be good enough at the game that the later arts are kinda useless. I've never even finished the final art for example.

@@TheVikingGeneral Irl, Oda Nobunaga had access to guns as early as 1549 (4 years after the campaign's start date). This is far before any clan gets even close to guns ingame except for the Otomo, even if you ignore Chi and rush guns. This should've been enough of a hint to CA that the gun techs need to be changed, but unfortunately the only way to fix it now is with mods. My buddy and I have been playing a lot of co-op Shogun 2 over the past few months and after trying both variants of the mod, we just can't go back. We're both huge fans of vanilla style Shogun 2, but this mod makes the game both more fun and more historically accurate. It how the game should've been from the start. Edits: Thanks for all the content btw! I'm always amazed by how active the Shogun 2 community is, even 10 years after the game's release. I picked up the game in 2016 and my buddy had basically never played tw before a few months ago. The fact both of us love this game so much despite having no nostalgia for it shows how amazing the game is. I love variety and replayability of Warhammer, I enjoy the difficulty of Attila and it's awesome battles, but I always go back to Shogun 2 after getting my fill of the others. It may not be as replayable as the other TWs due to the smaller map and lack of variety, but what it does do it does near perfectly. And then of course there's FOTS which just takes Shogun 2 to another level. My friend is still waiting for a sale before he picks up FOTS since he doesn't wanna pay full price for a 10 year old expansion, but he already knows he's gonna love it.

@@zktwo Haha, glad you enjoy the game in your way! Personally, I don't play with mods for total war games (except empire I guess), but mainly because I don't want to (ok, I can't) choose a mod and stick to it. I'll end up spending more time modding a game than playing it xD. On the concept of historical inaccuracy, the Egypt faction from the Rome 1 game (and soon the remastered as well) is highly inaccurate as well. I do think CA does their research, but changes some things in a way they think will be more fun. Luckily people can use mods if people feel CA made a mistake. I would maybe also check out instant-gaming. (not affiliated, just personal) It's like G2A, but ran by a company which is able to get keys cheap. So no shady person to person selling going on.

I would say that it depends because if you play Oda early rush type campaing then you won't have enought time to properly build your pike and shot army for ottomo they get acces very early so it doesn't matter where the tech is but with most other clans you might want to prolong your campaing to build up your economy enough to not strugle during realm divide which means that if you play shimazu or takeda getting the tech isn't realy too big of a problem but at the same time most of the other clans will have no use from using matchlocks since superior bow range make it simply better and even if you want to play with boomsticks recruiting rocket launchers is simply better

In my opinion, using Portuguese Tercos as the main line infantry doesn't even make any sense for this game. It says in the game encyclopedia that these troops are supposed to be rare, only sent out to "aid" Portuguese allies (and not be the main fighting force). This inherently means that Portuguese Tercos should be only a small portion of a Japanese Army. The fact that they are not limited to 4 units per campaign (like Date bulletproof samurai) is just so that they can sell the DLC itself.

Honestly people should start using the imported matchlocks more. It gets around the issue of the slow research, are QUITE effective, even if they aren't on the level of samurai matchlocks, and don't even require you to become christian! Just make the nanban trade port, make sure you can handle the religious discontent on that one province, and there you go, you got yourself guns!

I noticed the hunting lodge in Echizen. Personally I would recommend not building it for all ranged units (except artillery). The amount of accuracry it gives is relatively low, so it will lose against a unit that has the armor upgrade. For province specialty I'd say both armor and accuracy work well.

Honestly, fire by rank is usually better just because it allows your gunners to be more compact. LoS is so valuable for gunners so having 1 thin squad hogging the best shooting spots justs makes your other gunners manoeuvre unnecessarily which is v dangerous. Single file can work if they're the only gunner unit in the area and you just want a quick, powerful volley off.

@@Jazzcat135 FbR would be better if it worked. Problem is, FbR simply does not work. I've seen multiple times when enemy cav runs head first into matchlocks set to FbR and never receive a single shot because of the absurd delay. Sometimes the same can happen with enemy infantry as well, and it is due to how picky the game is with the formation. If one man is not 100% in place and ready the cycle does not start. Such pickiness is also why the "Tosa Shuffle" occurs, which you see in FOTS when a unit is taking a lot of fire (The lads just shuffle about as they reform rather than returning fire). If FbR worked properly I would use it constantly, but getting it to behave is a nightmare. Much better is to get a mod that removes the really stupid lock that makes it so only the front rank can fire (A lock not present on Donderbus and Mounted Gunners, dismount those lads and every dude who gets Line of Sight on a target fires) and permits Kneel Fire. That lets you fire 3 ranks deep (Sometimes more) without the nonsensical delay.

Here's how I'm using matchlocks: The "Expanded Japan Mod" (www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?602818-Expanded-Japan-(97-new-regions-101-new-factions) yields a map with nearly 3x as many provinces, and "More Campaign Years" (steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=110937071) is compatible, adding 70 years of play, before 1545 starts. With these mods, a "Long Campaign Victory" requires controlling 100 total provinces, and shifts when RD happens to a bit over 45 provinces owner. 64 turns, in that campaign, is just a prologue that takes you most the way toward realm divide. I was a few turns past getting Gunpowder Mastery (having also secured some chi techs) and owned about 47 provinces (Kyoto included) when RD hit, and have fully 50 years of turns left to stabilize my economy, battle down the pesky rebels, and leverage true firepower. If you want to play an epic map that more fully captures the epic scale of the Sengoku Jidai, with the time to go further down the tech trees in your play, I highly recommend these two mods. As the Oda, the gunpowder tech pathway takes you through the Long Yari Ashigaru unlock, and Shingen shall tremble before your centuries-early pike and shot formations. The map also makes the North much denser and more packed with provinces, making an Uesugi campaign that leverages their superior warrior monks more viable (as warrior monk armies could feasibly come online), while at the same time significantly improving their first 20 turns of expansion because the long-province issue isn't there.

I found it easier to grab 2 schools as a seaborne southern clan, since you can get 1 in Kyushu, then sail up the coast to grab the one near Kyoto (and Kyoto itself if you dare).. It's the path of least resistance, since the central region has too many great clans to fight through- especially the Takeda-Hojo-Imagawa triple alliance..

This has to be the very worst thing about Shogun 2. The single most significant development during the sengoku jidai was the widespread mass adoption of matchlock muskets. Armies could consist of 50% matchlocks or more and here we have a game about the era where matchlocks barely show up, kinda suck and are not really worth using unless you are playing a certain clan. The equivalent would be if they made _FRICKIN BOWS_ a late game technology in either Medieval 2 or Rome 2 and the general advice if you wanted to use bows at all was to play as the "bow nation". It is flabergasting. Fix it with mods.

@@TheVikingGeneral Yeah, you are right about that. I wanted to include two games that both newer and older players could relate to and was a bit hasty about it. Now, what would be equivalent during the Roman era? Something that defined the combat of the time, it doesn't have to be a ranged weapon... For campaigns that start during the early republic the late game technology is going to be sword and shield infantry. After all, during the time of the Samnite wars Rome transitioned from the using the greek phalanx to using the more flexible maniple system of hastati, prinicpes and triarii where all had swords except for the triarii. Well, now you will be using the greek phalanx untill the late game and that is only if you are willing to neglect a bunch of other research. Becuase the Rome games cover such a large area different nations will need to have different things locked away. For Carthage it will need to be galleys and for Parthia it will need to be cataphracts and horse archers.

@@mattislindehag3065 Oh yeah, I understand your point, I was just a little confused with the bows and Romans :P I think that the developers made a deliberate choice there, but I'm not completely sure what the reasoning behind that was. I mean, if we look at Rome 1, one of the biggest ahistorical aspects is the Egyptian faction, since during that time it would be a mainly greek cultured faction, like the seleucids. It probably has to do with balancing actual history with fun gameplay.
