How to use Milliput
In this latest The China Repair Studio video, I will be showing you how to use Milliput on ceramics.
Milliput comes in various colours.
I will be filling in hairline cracks as well as replacing a missing leg from a Staffordshire figure.
Join me and start learning the skills of ceramic, porcelain and pottery repair and restoration.
We will be covering equipment, adhesives, filling, painting and airbrushing.
We all have a broken piece of pottery, china/porcelain lurking in our cupboards which we can all recycle and reuse.
I have been a ceramic restorer for many years after training in Oxford. Most of my clients are private clients but I also work for antique dealers.
I would love to share my experience with you.

This is a wonderful piece of work. I love to see things restored like this. Although totally different to yourself, I'm into restoring very old railway models - locomotives especially - that would otherwise be thrown away. The one I'm working om right now has some hairline cracks that need filling. Ordinary plastic filler won't do the job. Several people have pointed me to Milliput, hence i arrived at your site. I'm glad I did. I found it very interesting.

Thanks Alison, very helpful series of videos. I am the last of generations and have inherited all the "stuff"! I have just ordered some Milliput. Can you clarify, does hot water "dissolve" the old yellow Araldite joins on ceramics my ancestors used or just other glues? Thanks again, love your work! ;-)

hey thanks for the thorough demo- I'm trying to repair a bisqued porcelain sculpture of mine. It's slightly less than a lifesize swan and the neck broke while transporting the piece to the kiln. I want to try to use milliput to repair the gap and seam the neck and head back onto the body. do you have any suggestions to help? thank you

Hi Geena, sorry to hear about your Swan. I must be such a large piece. I would try the Milliput Superfine White for the gap depending how large it is. Just go slowly and when sanding down carefully. Please let me know how you get on. 😀

Hi Allison. Thank you for your tutorials. They are very helpful! I went ahead and ordered the Milliput superfine white from Amazon, and one of the sticks (the one in the blue bag) arrived with the bag all sticky on the outside, and the stick itself has some brown discoloration on it. The one in the clear bag is fine. Is this normal, or do you think I should I return it? Thanks for your guidance on this. 😊

Thanks Ali for your reply. I just found some Araldite "Ultra Clear" on our Aus Bunnings Hardware Store that says it is great for glass and crystal and does not "yellow" over time. Have you seen or used this product in the UK? (No titanium dioxide needed which I am having trouble finding locally.)

Hi Alison, I am looking to learn how to do minor restoration work on small, detailed victorian terracotta plaques. As a collector, being able to professionally do my own would be part of the fun. I am looking for advice to get started, the best products to use, and have some questions on how to colour match, as often they are slightly different colours ranging from pink to beige. Any guidance at all would be greatly appreciated. Looking at milliput led me to you, but it seems that milliput might be difficult to colour match.
@theceramicrepairstudio

@@theceramicrepairstudio Its broke in three pieces and glued . So I'll have to soak it .If I do will the hot water mess with the metal? It has a metal ring around the lid? It was glued crooked so It needs re-done. But at least there all there. Slight tiny pieces missing, Oh so very tiny shard's of glass not sure what to fill with but maybe okay when glued closer together?

I cannot get my Milliput the same texture as yours. I used some water on my fingers to smooth it but that did not help. Did I over knead it or did not mix it well.
@theceramicrepairstudio
@theceramicrepairstudio 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Leah, is the Molliput you are using an old pack or new? You shouldn't have to use water. If it is an old pack just keep working with your fingers to mix well and it should combine and soften, unless it has been exposed yo air. If it is a new pack just keep working through, if you still have problems contact Milliput directly. Hope this helps.😃

I have tried to repair a Teapot Lid by adding the little piece that holds the lid in place when pouring. I followed your instructions using Milliput but I am finding after 24 hours it still hadn't cured. It's going on to the 4th day and Its still soft. I did mix the Milliput properly. Is there another method I can use to make this Milliput cure and become hard??? Would putting it in the oven at a certain temperature help it to harden? Please advise, thank you!

@@theceramicrepairstudio I have another question: After I repair a chip or break on a spout of a Teapot or a vessel with the Milliput that holds liquid hot or cold and its been painted should that be sealed with a product so it doesn't affect the repair that is done?
