I’m using it for the first time this year thanks to your input last year. We got a good week this week to do it. I only noticed bearding on one or two colonies

My first 2 years I did not treat because it was so confusing and intimidating. Of course I lost the bees. I now test and treat and I will say, in today's climate it is the most important thing I do for my hives. You have to understand this Varroa problem to have bees.

I treated with MAQS and today I opened my box to find ALOT of dead brood.. Like the young bees hatching out dead being removed…. Could this be due to the MAQS? I put two in the box with a medium on top for the 7 day treatment. A lot of bees outside on the ground of the hive as well…

So I did the harsh treatment and there are a lot of dead bees the next morning. Does that mean the whole hive will die?

Do you leave the paper on the strips? We opened the hive and the strip with paper had not been used Today we put a second strip on and took off the paper Please let us know

What if you have a double box? Would you put one on each or two in the middle? Do you have to remove the honey supers?

It looks like you needed a second super . It would give the bees a place to build comb and store honey. Burr comb is a waste of the Bees energy . The feeder looks full of comb too.

I have tried the quick strips. They are really slimy. Your application look easy to work with. What should I change. I keep them Refrigerated. Should I freeze them? Thank you, Confused.
@BKBees
@BKBees 2 жыл бұрын
They get nasty really quickly. The newer the strips the less frustrating the issue. If I have one recommendation it would be to switch to formic pro, they are a superior product, not nearly as slimy or destructive.

I treated my two hives with two strips of MAQS each seven days ago. Today I checked and my bottom sticky boardwas covered in dead mites. Is that an indication that my hives had high mite loads or that the MAQS just did a great job killing them? When I opened the hive I still smelled the MAQS so I left them in hoping to kill even more mites. Next week I’ll try to do an alcohol wash to get a mite count but for now I’m worried my mite load was extremely high. Let me know. Thanks.

Excellent episode! A little diversion QUESTION......Can there be significantly different sized forager bees in the same colony? I see very small foragers along with quite large ones flying in and out of my entrance. I thought maybe the larger ones were drones (but I think not). Also, do drones indeed forage at times? Why would they be outside the hive? Confused......here.
@BKBees
@BKBees 5 жыл бұрын
Yes nutrition differences during development can create differently sized foragers. Drones don't forage, they just go to drone congregation areas and look for queens to mate with.

How do you choose when to use MAQS or the OA treatments? Is it the time of year, strength of the hive, ect?
@BKBees
@BKBees 4 жыл бұрын
I try to use MAQS once per year because it's super effective and also effective on tracheal mites, so, my target for that is late summer. Other than that, if the mites are out of control, I make the decision based on what time of year and how much brood the hive has. If it's super brooded I'll try to fit in a maqs treatment, if it isn't then I'll likely use OA vapor.

It seems that MAQS is being phased out and replaced by Formic Acid Pro. I understand that they have a longer shelf life. Have you tried them yet?
@BKBees
@BKBees 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah formic pro is the new version, no I haven't used it. As long as the slightly cheaper maqs option is available I'll use that. It's essentially the we thing though, so I have nothing against it except the price.

I have a small hive, small, not many bees, I do not want to lose my bees cause it was just a small swarm I caught, I was thinking of using a strip to kill varroe mites, just treating the hive. * I have a five frames hive, I mostly see comb, the queen most of the times I do not see eggs or cap brood, something must be wrong. Maybe something is wrong with my queen. Can you give me some advice on this?
@BKBees
@BKBees 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah if you don't see any brood your queen is a dud. Replace her. Sorry I missed this comment.

I've heard that powdered sugar works well, they groom the mites off each other. What's your take? Thanks for the videos!
@BKBees
@BKBees 5 жыл бұрын
It can knock off a mite or two but makes a real mess and isn't very effective. If you are committed to that as an option, do mite counts frequently to make sure it isn't getting out of control, and be prepared to take more aggressive action.

@@BKBees Thank you for you reply. I'm headed into my first ever winter with 2 colonies and I'm trying to sponge up whatever info I can get. I've wondered, too, after your previous video, if a snowdrift would be a good insulator and if I should keep the entrance open? Thanks again and keep up the good work!
@deedinky1
@deedinky1 5 жыл бұрын
I've tried powdered sugar. Did not work and made a mess. I've tried several "internet" methods over the last few years since varoa came to nz. The only methods that really work are the proper ones. My take anyway.

I have 3 booming 8 frame single deep hives. Would you use 1 strip or 2 for 8 frame hives?
@BKBees
@BKBees 5 жыл бұрын
I would probably do the two strip harsh treatment but that's more a conservation of labor. For you I'd recommend one strip one week twice. The more thorough softer version.

New videos tomorrow and the next day, hopefully. The answer to the question though is I haven't been up to much bee stuff, after the last honey harvest (which I could have made videos on but man am I sick of honey) I applied the late summer treatments and have been just letting the hives get heavy. Now that it's September though, I'm back at it with feeding and prewinter stuff, so videos to come.
