HOW TO USE NEARPOD IN ONLINE CLASSES FOR STUDENT ENGAGEMENT (tutorial 2020)// Nearpod is by far my most favourite EdTech tool that I use in my online classes to engage my students. In today's NearPod tutorial, I walk you through how to use NearPod with Google Slides and demonstrate some of the activities that are available to use in your online classroom or brick & mortar class.
Why use NearPod? Simply put, NearPod is a tool that can very easily be integrated into any online class for those teachers who are currently looking for distance or remote learning solutions.

Hello. Thanks for the great tutorial. I've used the draw feature in the classroom before, but students used IPads. Does this work on the student end with a laptop? If so, how do they draw?

Thanks for an excellent video. I have been using Nearpod for about two years now, and I love it. Many of the activities are useful for formative assessments. I have a suggestion that I have found very useful in online resources and grading. For a formative assessment, I use completed/not completed as the rubric for a class participation grade. The report function in Nearpod will give you a record of what students did and whether they took part in all the activities. I find that to be much better than the old CP grading method of trying to remember who took part in class discussions, and much easier to defend if a grade is challenged. Also, I have a convention for students signing in to Nearpod and other resources like Socrative. I make them use their own names, and also to do it in "last name, first name" format. Then, when I check the reports of activities, all the student names are in alphabetical order. Transferring results to my gradebook is much easier that way.

thanks for the tutorial... can you share on how you use nearpod for LA, Science, Math, etc. in an enclosed classroom where teachers have to create different types of lessons .. also, can you integrate that with Google classroom & other G Suite for education. lastly, I saw that you opened up slides, but didn't quite get how it was integrated with Slides...I guess what I need is a complete start to finish samples of lesson planning using Nearpod. I'm in charge of getting teachers up to speed on this virtual classroom & have just stumped on this... really like it so far, but not quite grasping it enough to teach others... will continue to search & learn more. thanks
@RochfordonDemand
@RochfordonDemand 4 жыл бұрын
The way it is integrated with Slides is through an add-on. If you have a Google Slide file open, you will see a menu item called "Add on" and one of the options there is to "Get Add Ons". That brings you to the Chrome store where you can search for free add ons.

I just discovered nearpod. I have created my lessons on google slides for outschool. I’m confused about the log in part. So if I am screen sharing my google slides do they need to log into nearpod? With the code. Or am I saving my google slides as a nearpod lesson and presenting my lesson that way? I hope my question isn’t too confusing. Thank you!

In the NearPod dashboard you can click on the button that says "Lesson In Google Slides" under the heading "Create Your Own". You can also, create a new Google Slide file in your Google Drive, go to "Add Ons" and then choose NearPod from there. If you haven't already added the add-on to Google Slides you'll need to do that first before it shows in your list of add-ons. :)

I will use Nearpod during my synchronous lessons in Zoom so they are able to interact with the Nearpod lesson, but also hear any information I have for them. A new feature that I will be using this year with Nearpod is the interactive video lesson type. I will be using this for asynchronous lessons and I just did an updated video that focuses on it :): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h7xii9aFu9iZpnU.html

Thank you for the tutorial. It's very well put together and you explain things very easily. I have a question, I have to do a demo lesson for an interview and I want to use NearPod. Can I send the link with the code to the people interviewing me the day before? Will the link work from one day to the next?
@RochfordonDemand
@RochfordonDemand 4 жыл бұрын
If you're using the option for a self-paced lesson then the link remains the same. If you are using the live lesson option then each time you log into the session you have the option for using the code already assigned to the session or to create a new one. Hope that helps! :)

Can you create like you did inGoogle Slides and present in Microsoft Teams?
@RochfordonDemand
@RochfordonDemand 3 жыл бұрын
I've only worked with Zoom and Google Meets when online with students so I'm not completely familiar with any limitations of Microsoft Teams. However, NearPod is a tool that students are able to access on their own web browser and it's not necessarily reliant on a teacher displaying the presentation. The teacher can control the pacing of when slides and activities are advanced and students each have access on their own device. :)

Hi. If I want to share the nearpod lesson before my actual class, do I click on Student-pace option instead of Live presentation?

Yes, you can do that. Student-paced option will allow students to access the lesson and move through it at their own pace instead of having the teacher control how they move through the lesson. :)

Does nearpod allow you to screen cast for asynchronous learning? Thanks!
@RochfordonDemand
@RochfordonDemand 2 жыл бұрын
Nearpod has a student-paced format that allows a teacher to give students an access code and they can each work through the Nearpod asynchronously. It is not a program that allows you to record your screen and teach what is on each slide and then send that out to students though. You can use Nearpod in conjunction with a program like Screencastify to do that. It is possible though to insert videos as part of the student-paced lesson, making it possible to have a teaching portion and a learning activity portion to the Nearpod. :)

First time I’m hearing about nearpod. Silly question -do students all need accounts on nearpod to participate with the google decks?
@RochfordonDemand
@RochfordonDemand 4 жыл бұрын
No such thing as a silly question. :) Students don't need an account. When you launch your NearPod session there is an access code provided. Students use the access code to participate in the lesson. No logging in, just putting in the access code on the NearPod website, providing a "nickname" and then they can see the lesson you've launched.

Newbie here. For distance learning, while a teacher is doing a created nearpod live lesson with her class, can she hear and speak her class during the live session for class discussion or to answer questions ( which means can the kids speak to the teacher)? If Nearpod dn allow access to microphones, it seems challenging to do this with young students.
@RochfordonDemand

NearPod in and of itself does not provide an in-person virtual lesson experience. I use NearPod with my students but we are all logged into Zoom. Zoom is what allows me to see and hear my students and NearPod allows the interactive/presentation portion of the lesson. :)

Ms. Rochford on Demand Thanks for your reply. Do you have a video on how to use zoom along with nearpod? I know how to share my screen in zoom so is it as you are zooming with the students, you just share your screen with live nearpod lesson open? Are they all just interacting on the one shared, teacher zoom screen (with nearpod lesson open)? That would be just one teacher screen the entire class is interacting with. I don’t see how polls,drawings, and all the other activities would work in that way. I guess I’m not seeing how kids can all be on their own chrome books at home on the nearpod live lesson at the same time we are zooming ( fairly new.to all this). I don’t know if I am making sense here-lol. I am enjoying your videos. They are very helpful!
