Colin you are the reason I bought a tubescreamer. And it’s the best guitar related purchase I’ve ever made. It’s one of those “never fail” pedals. No matter what gear I use with it, it sounds amazing. So if you’re ever in Manchester or Nottingham, let me know. I owe you a few drinks.

I personally use my Tubescreamer as a boost for my Marshall valve amp when playing at home or smaller gigs for that breakup sound you can only achieve at higher volumes on a valve amp. Drive low, level high, tone just past midway creates this later seventies screaming sound that sounds much more natural when combined with the Marshall’s gain than just using a distortion through the clean channel. To me, it’s the best pedal ever, and the only pedal I ever use.

I remember forty years ago as a young man, my orders came through that I was being sent to Holy Loch, Scotland. "Great!" I thought, at least I would be going somewhere that spoke and understood english. Boy was I wrong. I got sorry tired of asking the locals to repeat themselves that I eventually gave up altogether. It took some time, but eventually I got what they were saying {well, most of the time}. Best people on earth, I miss their hospitality {the girls of Glasgow especially!}.

Its funny everyone else that makes a video about "Overdrive" pedals use them as a Distortion pedal using the gain or drive to generate the distortion. IMO you are doing it right pushing the front end into breakup and this is how ive always thought they were supposed to be used. Great job i wish you did the overdrive pedal shootouts the others are doing.

The Boss DS2 is also really interesting for this same application. Using the same setting on the DS1 mode really lets the mids and harmonics sing. It's got slightly more mids than a standard DS1 and it shelves off some low end too just as the TS. Always get compliments on my tone when using the DS2 like this in front of my JVM210

Love my TS-808 for just boosting my heavy gain guitar sound without really distorting it anymore than needed. The sound becomes so much more defined and not as muddy as it was without the tube screamer. The settings I use are as follows: Engl Invader amp, heavy lead channel, about 3-4 on gain. EQ: 3,5,6. TS-808: gain: 0, tone: 6, level: 10. Works wonders for both rhythm guitars and lead guitars in my Melodeath band!

Great video! I love the tube screamer. It's one of my favourite pedals and it is pretty much always on when I'm using a high gain sound. I own a micro dark (bought off of yours and Pete Cottrell's recommendations) and I found it to be too bassy for my tastes, so what I did was I have the shape set right in the middle, the gain around 1 oclock, a tube screamer set with almost no gain, high tone, high volume, and then a EHX soul food (klone) with tone at 1, volume at 1030, and gain at 130. What this does is cut off a lot of the booming low end of the amp, but not push it into oversaturation. I like the sound of the soul food's drive, so blending that with the orange's natural distortion sounds good. WIth the mid range hump of both pedals and the added highs from the tone knobs being pulled fairly high, but with the TS attenuating some of that high end, you get an aggressive, but not harsh sounding high end, extremely punchy mid range, and very tight low end. I was struggling to get the sound I was looking for from the micro dark until I blended both of these pedals together.

Hmm. Yeah I foubd a very useful trick for when this happens. It was so simple too. One of those things that was like duh. It's really simple. Before we get to that just a couple quick words from you mother. "Honey, take out the trash" and my personal favorite. " Tell that nice commenter to call me, I haven't been ****** like that since grade school!" Lol she a freak. Ok... Guys gotta pay the bills. So now a weird weird word from your high school principal. "Colin, I saved money on my internet/car insurance/stuff/ gambling vigorous by switching from crack to meth, I don't get that super duper freak weirdo paranoid feeling that I usually get off shooting Viagra in my neck. That shit is just fun. Can't that you enough for the best monster **** of my 50's. You will always be my #3." Colin.... You need more picks and less fucked up people in your life anyways buddy the moment you've been eating my soul out for,...(dirty and weirdo I am, I'm a horrible person, and terrible friend. Warning: I'll love you forever and ever. You're my Ace.) Ok yeah sorry. The trick to cancel out the moosh I call it? You just do the math. Well what levels you riding high on? Ok so let's say all you knobs go to ten... Bass, treble, mid, tone, reverb, sex, hmmm what else, screw. Ok B 6, tr 7, m 5, to 3, r 4, s 11, s 1. Ok, so. That equals.... Like 25 I think cause last 2 are in your dreams u sicko. Ok, again just breath breath breath suck sick duck duck chick FIL HCl Ok, do the fuck duck duck chick girl JK high chi gay gay gay cc coo coo high high Wtf 25 ok then what you want to do is figure out the length of your little buddy. He's definitely a solid 7 so we then go back to the volume which was at level? Right, turn that all the way to left until you can't notice the moosh anymore. Boom! Problem fuckin' sliced and diced. FUCK the Bozo's. Right my guy?

Can the Tubescreamer sound be achieved with an EQ pedal by dropping the bass, boosting the mids and increasing the overall output level? If so, I guess the EQ would be the more flexible option. Anyway, nice one Colin! I saw you on the GuitCon vids and this is the first video of yours I have seen. Great job.

Ah, just watched the Appendix video and now I don't think the EQ pedal can simulate what the TS is doing.

ForViewingOnly I think it could but not the way you described. You probably would have to add a slight boost to all frequencies and a little bit more in the ones you are particularly wanting to emphasize. Look up passive bass pdt control for an idea on what I'm talking about for why dialing back bass probably wouldn't give this sort of tone.

I much prefer; gain 8, level 10, tone 10, into the clean channel of my DSL on 6 amp gain

I can see why people would use a tube screamer in a band cause it keeps your tone in one lane, but I feel like it takes a lot of character out of my guitar when I practice by myself with one. I feel like it kills my lows and my highs become either dead or unbearably bright. Even when you get the highs in the sweet spot, it’s honky. Midrange is thick as a brick, though I think it’s a very important tool for a gigging guitarist but kind of limiting creatively if you play with humbuckers. I think it opens a few doors for single coils

What if I told you that's not the best way to use this pedal? There is such a thing as too much.

@@ScienceofLoud I would say I'm intrigued. I always thought the way the pros like SRV used the TS9 was to crank down the gain & crank up the level. Mine is the TS808HW and I will be trying your method when I get home today! I really respect your opinion and I've been subscribed/watching your vids for years man, thanks for the reply!
