My tips and tricks for how to easily use the PhotoPills app to plan your Milky Way photography.
While PhotoPills is an awesome app, it definitely has a steep learning curve when you first open it up. But by the end of this video you will know how to identify when the Milky Way is visible, whether or not the moon will be in your way and where to set-up your tripod to get the core of the Milky Way exactly where you want in your frame around your foreground subject.
PhotoPills is available for iOS and Android. Look for future videos to hear about other apps I recommend for Astrophotography.
I am still making changes to the AstroPhotog.com website this week, but once everything is back up you can go there for more in-depth tutorials.

Another great video! Photo Pills is a must have app for photographers but it does *so much* and provides so much data that it can be intimidating. You do a great job of breaking things down so that anyone can use this app to plan for great Milky Way shots.

Haha hey thanks, Tim! It really can be intimidating. It was for me. I remember the day I discovered that the dotted arcing line was the Milky Way! I was elated! It became my go-to the moment I recognized that but I had the app for months before realizing that!! :D Thanks and I am really glad you feel that way, I had to re-record this three times to fix that about it. Well done, you are a skilled tecacher. I particcularly knew it was going to be good when Blanding was used. That is where I grew up and remeber as a kid (50+ years ago). I remeber sleeping outside under the stars and look at the milky way. I realize now how lucky I was to have grown up there, and how the dark the sky must have been then.

I haven't used it before and I don't know how it performs with Coma Aberration but it has an awesome fast aperture and Sigma is freakin' terrific! Not sure where you live, but if you are in the northern hemisphere get out this weekend because the Milky Way core is going to be below the horizon for us starting next week depending on where you live! Haha yeah I hear ya. It can be tough to follow them, but I bet it is pretty hard to know on what level to talk about something you know inside and out. That has to be hard to guess what makes sense intuitively to others and what doesn't. :D We had a Listener Q&A with Rafael Pons from PhotoPills a couple weeks ago for a podcast episode and throughout it I kept learning things I had no CLUE existed because they just weren't something you would intuitively guess. :D The full interview is on our channel already, but I am making a highlight reel of the tips I gained from hanging out with Rafael. Just last night Brendon and I were testing our understanding of a hidden GEM of a section in PhotoPills and it was just amazing how hard it is to have guessed how to use that feature but now we get it! Aaron, this information blows me right off my feet. Reminds me of winds on the German island of Sylt. I have heard of this program, I have seen several photographers produce such vivid Milky Way pics over Nubble Lighthouse in Maine, perhaps this is what they planned their shots with. What an Unlocking of such a mystery in my own mind. Knowing where and when is the entire battle. True, the camera is one element.. however camera knowledge dims in comparison to Where and When. They way you just peeled away an entire layer is just mind blowing. Great video, I appreciate that I can discern every word I hear. Overall, this video , I will be watching over and over. Thank you.... Lee from Biddeford Maine,, I am close to Portland Head lighthouse,Nubble Lighthouse, the huge ocean trail on Perkins Cove... Biddeford Pool, all within 30 minute drive time. This video will give me that chance to grab those phenomenal photos of this rocky coastline.

Hey Aaron great stuff dude. I got one question . Your phone or laptop should be pointing north shouldn’t it and if so shouldn’t the app be able automatically point north. I can stand looking south with my phone pointing south and the app says it’s pointing north. It just assumes the top of the phone is pointing north

The moon can also be an amazing help if you're trying to get the milky way with an interesting foreground. In fact the shot that won the Astro Photo of the year from the Royal Observatory of Greenwich has a massive quarter moon illuminating the foreground with the Milky way off to the side. But of course if you just are shooting the sky, get that moon out of there. Great video, btw!

Hey Aaron, I just got the app on my cell phone. When I'm in the planner tab, I'm not getting the information on the right (such as how the milky way will be oriented) that you are showing on your video. Is there a way for me to show that info on my android or is this something I would have to use my i-pad to see. Thanks! Great video!

I started a video comparing two stacking image examples from a Rokinon 24mm and a Tamron 15-30mm at its 24mm and I need to re-do it. That video though will only show the comparison of a Rokinon 24mm stacked image vs. a Tamron 15-30mm at 24mm stacked image. What I still need to create is the In-The-Studio portion showing my favorite way to do image stacking on a PC. There is a different program for Mac that is great too that i need to show. So in short, I need to do more testing of the options out there to decide on my favorite clean way of doing it before I can make the video. Stacking is new to me as well and I have been doing some test runs through Deep Sky Stacker, Fitzwork and simply through Photoshop. It will be another month before I am ready for that video most likely. But it is in the works and the research stage is active! :D Thanks for asking! I am glad that a planned video of mine is already getting some interest and showing that it has been worth my time to work on already. Thanks again, Grahame! -Aaron

We use Clear Dark Sky at the observatory but it is not very reliable in some of the regions here in Canada! I am planning to buy an LED headlamp to light the foreground.. let's see how it will go!

Awesome and that is too bad about those areas of Canada...I suppose it is only as accurate as the weather stations it gathers its data from. But I also have experiences where unexpected temperatures or moisture levels result in thin cloud cover that ruins everything. Last year, ClearDarkSky was accurate more than 75% of the time. My experience in the BEGINNING of this year was that it failed me three trips in a row. :D Dangit!! Haha it hurt too because I brought along friends who wanted to learn more about Milky Way Photography. As for light painting, it can work okay with LED Headlamps but often they put off a really blue light and color cast your scenery. If you have something with HI-CRI LED Bulbs in them that is the best or something that has a warm color. If you have an option, get one with a warm 5500K or greater color but that too can be an unwanted color cast so a HI-CRI LED would be best if you can. :D Good luck, Parshati!! -Aaron

I can't get the milky way circles to show on my planner. The option for viewing milky way has a line through the "eye", but sun and moon is available. I'm on an android phone and located in Taupo New Zealand where we can see the milky way all year round. Can some one help please? Thanks

Apparently in version 2.6, they have changed the moon graphics so that it only displays one day at a time now. Makes for less confusion as you indicated in your video.

Thanks, Julian! Haha wish PhotoPills would pay me but they know they get enough good publicity fanboy talk from me for free! :D That said, we definitely owe PhotoPills. Ever since we got Rafael Pons (The Bard) from the PhotoPills team to come on our podcast we have been in good contact with him and have a great relationship with him! In fact, on his USA tour he is going to work a workshop with Brendon and I in just a couple Saturdays! Going to get to hang out with him a lot over the next couple weeks and really get to know him! Going to be a blast! :D As for my more comprehensive videos, they have been in editing bay hold and most need to be filmed still. It has been terribly hard to keep up on the podcast edits and Friday videos already let alone adding extra videos. BUT that said, Brendon and I have a goal to bring out content much more frequently here as we begin Year #2 in Photog Adventures and starting this week, plan to deliver a lot to Facebook and KZfaq. Hey Pony! I am glad you get it now! 😃 It isn’t the most intuitive interface because it has so much great information. Once you do interpret it and master the language, it is crazy powerful! To answer your question: That right hand menu is there on the iPad. On the iPhone or other mobile devices, you will see those modules ON THE TOP of the planner. Heya James! You most likely have the button triggered that turns those off and honestly it is pretty impossible to know that these squares on the panels are buttons. haha I had the app for over a year before I knew! :D So how to fix it is go to your app and go to PLANNER. Swipe the panels from the TOP to the right or left until you see the PANEL that will say "Visibility GC" and next to the text you will see the SQUARE WITH WHITE CIRCLES IN IT. Since you are not seeing the Milky Way Arch on the planner, most like you JUST see the white circles and the square is darkened a bit grayed out. TAP THAT SQUARE with the White Circles in it and you will see a YELLOW CIRCLE, WHITE CIRCLES YOU ALREADY SAW and a GRAY CIRCLE now. If you see that you will probably have noticed the Milky Way arch has come back on the planner with those arching/semi-circle of dots. Does that fix it? -Aaron

Hey Alicja! Do you mean Stellarium? I think at the end there I say Stellarium. It is a free app that does help you know where the Milky Way will be and what times it is above the horizon. It is awesome BUT it just doesn't include the info like PhotoPills does where you can say where you will be standing and know the direction to look for the Milky Way Core as precise as you would want. Ahhh that is a good point! The thing is, the MOBILE app isn't free on the iOS App Store or Google Play but at times it has been. So that is a tough one to be accurate with. However, go to Stellarium.org and you will see that the Desktop Application is actually free and a LOT better! So that is an option if you are interested. :) You are welcome for the reply! Anytime! Hey Creeper, in this video back then I am just using my Canon 6D to record myself. When I am showing my iPad screen in the PhotoPills app then I am using Quicktime to record my iPad screen. These days I use my 5DMIV and OBS to capture my screen.

That is a good point! That video has been around for years, perhaps I should update it. Although the info wouldn't be that much different and I love my white board lesson. Why can't I see the milkyway phase in the moon app, plus when I try to change my location, it will not let me enter text, just numbers.

Heya Nick! Without being there in person, I can only guess. But first off let me say update the app ASAP. Just in case you have an older version on your phone. Let me guess first on why you can't type in more than numbers.When in the Moon Pill, hit the "SETTINGS" button in the top right. Then tap the line saying "POSITION" and make sure to turn off "Autoupdate". Once you do that, the box to type should appear. There you can search locations by name and set your location from where the moon data will be drawn. SECOND the seeing the Milky Way Phase. I am assuming you mean seeing the Milky Way graphic in the 24-hour timeline in the space below the image of the moon phase. The milky way dots show up ONLY IF THE MILKY WAY CORE IS ABOVE THE HORIZON IN YOUR LOCATION. So if you are not seeing it, the issue might be where you set the location. The ONLY TIME the Milky Way graphics don't show even though the core is above the horizon, is during months where IT NEVER GETS DARK ENOUGH. For instance, say you are in London and looking at this. You will NOT see the Milky Way graphics because in London the skies at night never get darker than the bright astronomical twilight period. So it won't show the Milky Way graphics even though the core does travel up above the horizon at night. Not until sometime in August do they return again. And that will be entirely dependent on where you are setting the location. PLEASE let me know if that makes sense and if you have any other questions! :D Thanks for watching the video! -Aaron

I've noticed there is a vertical turquoise meter next to the milky way visibility. Even after the moon sets (currently it's a half moon) the meter is still quite low. SO, I guess what I'm asking is, even after the moon SETS, its phases can STILL make or break visibility for a photo?? Great video by the way bud! Thank you!

First off, thanks for watching my video! :D As for your question, that meter next to the Milky Way is simply & succinctly declaring a night a GREAT ONE for Milky Way Photography or LESS THAN GREAT. The ONLY nights that have full turqoise bars are those surrounding a New Moon and then it gets low to empty the closer it gets to Full Moon phase. In short, if you see ANY BARS at all, you know you can go out and do Milky Way Photography BECAUSE at some point during that night there will be a moment where the Moon is down. It isn't saying any image taken that night will be lesser, it is declaring that there are fewer hours than say on a New Moon phase night. Make sense? So absolutely not, no matter what phase the moon is in, once set low enough below the horizon it will NOT affect your Milky Way image. -Aaron

CanvAs You probably have accidentally hit the button. It is really tough to know it IS a button so no worries you aren’t alone. On the iPhone you will see the modules at the TOP of the Planner. On the iPad you will see the modules on the right of the planner. Look for the module entitled “Visibility GC” and you will see white dots in a square. TAP that square and you will notice the Milky Way arching white dots appear and disappear when you tap that square. All of the icons in the modules are buttons and it is hard to know it. 😃 Hope that all makes sense! -Aaron

Hey again, Jason! :D Sigh...man I know what you mean. Spending $10 on an app feels like buying $100 piece of gear. Apps just don't cost $10 that often. While I will say that it is way worth it and if you think about it from a perspective of skipping one restaurant lunch it won't seem like that much. As far as apps go, your alternative is to use the $6 app PlanIt but at that point, just buy PhotoPills. If you are okay with using the Desktop, Stellarium is great. I am doing a video on Stellarium right now as well and you can get all the information off Stellarium except for knowing the precise angle the Milky Way Galactic Core will be in relation to where you are standing. That just means you have to GO to the location and find out on your own or use Google Maps and where Stellarium shows the Milky Way rising. If you can find a compromise to justify spending the $10, you won't regret it if you go out more than three times a year for Astro. Plus, there are many many features in PhotoPills. You aren't paying $10 for what I just talked about, you are getting much much more so it is a solid purchase. Thanks for watching again, Jason! Im EXTREMLY confused with the words moon rise and moon set. How can the moon "rise" at 8:27 AM and "set" at 10:51 PM? Shouldn't it be the other way around???

Heya Moira! No worries at all! That's exactly what I am saying! 😃 As long as the Milky Way core is above the horizon and if the moon is not yet risen or already set you CAN capture the Milky Way. This opens up two full weeks before the new moon and after! Just some days have minutes and some have hours! For instance, it was just barely the full moon and I could go out tonight if it wasn't cloudy and have an hour or so of time to see the Milky Way. 😃 Thanks for watching! Just remember to check Photopills to know what the Milky Way CORE is doing. That is best thing to Photograph and it can be in a situation where the moon is set or not risen yet but so is the Milky Way core. You have to time it out when the Milky Way is UP and the Moon is DOWN. :) -Aaron

Mostly yes. Some features need data, like the maps, but the gps position info still works. The AR modes are perfect to use out in the field.

How to get the white dots??

Hey Jessica! You probably have them turned off and it is because the app is NOT very clear that the PICTURE SQUARES at the Top of Planner ARE ACTUALLY BUTTONS! So go to the one where you see "Visibility GC From To" and TAP the Square on the left until it shows a graphic with both the YELLOW SUN and GRAY MOON and the WHITE DOTS. If you don't see these, then go to the iPhone or Android App on a mobile device and go to Planner and look at the top and SWIPE them left or right to see the different kinds. On a Tablet they are on the right like in my video. There are several of them to swipe there at the top there, one called "Pin to Pin Geodetic Info" or the yellow and gray circle that says "Sun Moon" or the module at the top titled "Visibility GC From To". The one you want is the Visibility GC one. Just TAP the graphic on the top left until the white dots turn on. That make sense? I hope so! :D -Aaron

Hey JR! Sorry this is frustrating! PhotoPills can be really annoying with how NOT intuitive it is. It especially doesn't help that I am showing from an iPad when you have an Android and don't mention the module buttons and how they work. HERE IS THE ANSWER: In the planner pill at the top of the map there are modules of data. There are several of them. Shadow, Pin to Pin geodetic ( the red and black pin graphic) the Sun and Moon etc. The crazy thing, is that ALMOST EACH MODULE HAS A BUTTON! Those buttons will turn things off and on. The one you need is called "VISIBILITY GC" and has a GRAY SQUARE WITH FIVE DOTS in it. If you tap that gray box with the white dots the white circles will come back on the map. Please try that and let me know if that works! Sorry again that it can get so frustrating. Hope this helps the video start doing what it is meant to do, help the hobby be fun and make PhotoPills easier to understand! Let me know if that works and hope you come back for more tips! :D -Aaron
