Did you know with the AutoCAD Plant 3D toolset Spec Editor, you can create and modify spec files using industry-standard parts catalogs? You can also customize catalogs!
Catalogs are used to create specs, and specs are used to route pipe in the 3D model, but they are not linked. Specs, catalogs, and the 3D model are independent after they are created. You can copy part information from a catalog to a spec. When the spec is complete the catalog is not required to use the spec. Likewise, a component added to the 3D model no longer requires the spec.
In the world of plant design, catalogs play a pivotal role in the creation of specs, which, in turn, dictate how pipes are routed in the 3D model. However, it's essential to understand that these elements - specs, catalogs, and the 3D model - are independent entities once they are created. This independence provides you with immense flexibility in managing your design workflow.
For instance, you can seamlessly copy part information from a catalog directly into a spec, simplifying the process of populating your specifications. Once your spec is complete, you no longer rely on the original catalog, making it possible to customize and tailor your project-specific specifications without being tethered to the original source.
Moreover, the freedom works both ways. If you add a new component to your 3D model, you are no longer tied to the previously associated spec. This freedom to decouple specs and models empowers you to make changes and iterations without creating unnecessary dependencies. As your design evolves, you can confidently adapt your specs and catalogs to suit the revised requirements without any constraints.
With AutoCAD Plant 3D Spec Editor, you'll experience an unprecedented level of control and efficiency in your plant design projects. By leveraging industry-standard parts catalogs and customizing them as needed, you can ensure consistency and accuracy while minimizing redundancies. The ability to decouple specs, catalogs, and 3D models gives you the agility to tackle design changes with confidence and ease. Take advantage of this powerful toolset to create outstanding plant designs and achieve remarkable results. Happy designing!

I'm trying to create a new spec with copper tube, using an existing cpak copper catalog, but I can't change the existing dimensions or add new ones...! Can anyone help and tell me why?

Hey. I'm on a project with someone else and we need to work simultaneously on the catalog, which is on the server. But when my colleagues have catalog x open, I can't open this catalog either. Is there a way to do this?

This is normal behaviour with Plant 3D Spec & Catalog editor. When a catalog is open and being edited by one user, the file is locked out to that user and only available in a read-only context for other users. This eliminates file corruption as two users cannot modify the same part at the same time.

Hello. I'm new to Plant 3D and was wondering where do I go in the spec editor to add new specs for sanitary tubing? I'm thinking it would be best to create it's own folder, but wasn't sure the best place to put this new folder to show up in Plant 3D to use. Thanks. ~ Laurie

Create a new spec by going to File > New > Create Spec in the Spec Editor. If you have a similar spec you can create one based on this existing one, otherwise you can start from scratch. Plant 3D offers various default content however we wouldn't be able to comment on if the default content contains sanitary specs.

@@PentagonSolutions Thanks for the information. Now that I have a new spec created with components, is there a way to separate a category into multiple ones of the same type? What I have so far is that I created different type of instruments: Pressure gauges, flow meters, level switches, etc. But when I add them to the spec, they all are under the "instrument" category I put them under when creating them. How can I separate them out where the pressure gauges are in one section, the flow meters in another section, etc. Right now, since they are all under the one category, so when I click on one of them in the palette that says pressure gauge, it lists everything in there and not just pressure gauge. It's probably because I resolved the part list priority for the sizes. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks. ~ Laurie

Hello. How can I add 100 inch size in port of equipment and even for the pipes? how can I declare new sizes? thank you in advance.

If creating a new pipe or instrument part from scratch, the size range can be defined initially at set up within the ‘Create New Component’ dialog box. The pre-defined sizes can go up to 160”. If amending an existing pipe or instrument part, go to the Catalog Editor and select the relevant part, you will be able to change the sizes of all ports using the ‘Sizes’ tab found here. Alternatively, you can attend one of our Plant 3D training courses or contact the team directly at info@pentagonsolutions.com.
