About this video
In this video Zane from Simple Green Tech does a Tracktion Waveform 11 tutorial showing you how to use the plugin racks with multi output instruments, specifically drum instruments. In this Waveform tutorial I use MT Power Drumkit 2 as the example but this will work with many other multioutput instruments too like EZDrummer, Sitala, Ugritone Drums, etc. By using this with your drum plugins you will be able to use effects like EQ, compression or whatever you want on each individual drum plus have a drum bus for even more control. Zane, Another great tutorial! I read the manual about four times trying to figure out how to do multi output instruments. I noticed the channel out options in MT Power Drums and understood the basic concept...but couldn't make it work. Your video made it quick and easy and it works perfectly! It's funny, I've been using Waveform for about a year now and I've gone back and started watching all of your tutorials again. They mean a lot more to me now that I have a decent working knowledge of the DAW, than they did in the first few weeks when I was overwhelmed. You're the best!

I’m really working on that. My plan is to make a song using a budget audio interface and mic. Plus I’m want to try using all free plugins too. I will document the whole thing and go through the mix. I just finished releasing my EP which took me a lot longer then I wanted but now I have the time to work on this idea.

Thanks for the video. I started to use waveform as well right after watching your content. I am also a regular user of reaper. So can you also do a video on how to rewire waveform to reaper. I believe waveform can be the host but not the slave when you rewire together.

Hi Zane. I really appreciate the efforts you put into making these tutorials. I was able to follow this tutorial and get the same results in EZ Drummer 2. However, what I cant figure out is an easy way to record the output of each drum to a separate track. Do you know how to do this? It would free up a bunch of CPU not having multiple instances of EZ Drummer loaded.

thank you...I was recording the drums in one single channel and when I play it just do not play what I've recorded...in a case of recording a simple pattern 4/4 with snare bass and hihat it just plays only one punch of the snare and only one bass and only one hihat and out of tempo...When I'm just playing sounds everything fine (waveform & mt drum) even when I'recording but trouble came when I need to play what I've recorded, so now I will try doing this you explain in your video and put every part in a single channel

Have you tried using SampleTank 4 (IK) with the plug-in rack? I was hoping that I could output each drum voice from the Stage Kit VI to a separate track but unless I'm missing something, SampleTank only allows you to output each part to a separate track, not the individual voices? So unless I install the same part on each of the 16 'slots', I will still need to use the plug-ins within SampleTank inself. Am I right or is there a work around? Great video's, by the way, thanks

Hello Sir, Thanks for creating this video it helped out ALOT, but ive got some sort of bug and I thought maybe you can help out. So when I go to the Mixer and try to change the outputs on each drumpart (snare, kick), it doesnt react as soon as i leave the mixer tab. That means i can only click on output 1, and the rest dont work. What should I do?

I typically put it on my kick drum track but I’m pretty sure you can put it on any of the drum tracks that have the wrapped drum plugin on them.

Damn, it didn"t allow me changing the outputs in the mixer, and I realized that all tracks were checked at "No output" and after I changed it to "input 1" it changed back. I can hear the sound of the drums in the VST.

Not sure if you’re answering old videos since this one is 3 yrs ago. Past 6 months I’ve been working on learning what I can just to record my drums. I can’t get results I’m looking for mostly Waveform seems better attuned video wise to midi and digital creations. I have an Audient EVO 16 interface. A 7 piece kit mic’ed up with one overhead. My question is can I use this same setup for recording my drums live? If not can you point me in the right direction for any advice, and mind you this is my first go round with digital recording so it’s a learning overload.

You’re micing your kit with 1 mic? You can do that live. Obviously it would be best if you had some shielding to keep other sounds from bleeding in as much as possible. So the answer would be that you can definitely record this but the quality will depend on how you have it setup in regards to other sound sources bleeding in. Because this is the whole kit, it will be harder to gate out other sounds so you want to try and get it as clean as possible. As for Waveform being better for digital and midi. It’s probably good for those types of music but I think it’s excellent at rock styles. That’s what I record where pretty much everything is audio with maybe 1 or 2 virtual instruments. I think it’s great for rock.

@@AudioTechTV not one mic but 7 on the kit and one overhead total of 8. But I get your point. I’m using waveform 12 pro. Adding a bus from your tutorial I just learned doing last week and then I seen the rack plugin, thinking it would simply an 8 mic set up. Man I’ve got lots to learn, thankfully you got some killer stuff.

Hi Zane. I'm using the plug-in rack to double my guitar VI (Real Strat Elite) so I have two different tracks panned L and R but using the same MIDI on the L track only. It works great but when I try to render it (to save on CPU resource) it only renders the L track with the MIDI on it. The R track is blank/empty. By luck, I found that by grouping the two tracks into a folder track I was able to render the folder track and this seemed to give me a stereo audio file with the different R and L signals. Is this how it should be done or did I just get lucky? Cheers

It should work the first way you tried. You would need to make sure both tracks were soloed if you’re just rendering those two tracks. Also make sure that the output to both tracks is sent to the same place. I typically create a mix bus track and change the output of all my instruments to go to that track. Sometimes I forget to send a track to it and it ends up missing when I mix down. But folder tracks and submix groups are ideal when dealing with instruments like guitar. I always group them together. Are you using different effects on the doubled channel? Ideally you should record the second guitar separately and either use a different guitar or different effects to give them some separation and to get a nice stereo sound.

@@AudioTechTV OKay, I'll have another look at this and see if I have better luck this time. The problem might be that I was rendering each track separately rather than the whole song so I'll try rendering the two doubled tracks together by soloing them only, as you suggest. FYI, on your second point, the Real Strat VI has a very cool patch which effectively creates the 'doubled' track from the same MIDI but with slightly different timing and tone. I compared the waveform for the L and R channels and can see there is a difference (and hear it as well). If you don't know the VI it's worth a look on the MusicLab website. @@Mine_CraftLP2 I have just resorted to having the drum plugin on each of my percussion tracks. Usually a cymbal, Tom, snare, and kick drum and just do it one at a time (start with cymbals, then fill in snares, Toms, Kick). Longer process but in a way it works better for me because I can focus on one element at a time and can have different plugin settings on each track.

You can record the midi onto the main track that has the plugin on it.

I know this is old but maybe you'll answer. I'm using waveform oem 11. I mixed all my drum parts individually. Now I wana mix down the drums, and buses down to 1 waveform track. Hiw can I do this?

1 way to do this would be to solo all of the tracks and busses that you want mixed down and then export the the audio like you would export an entire mix. Or you could route all of the tracks that you want mixed down to a bus and then on another track set the input as that bus. Arm that track for recording and record it in. It might sound complicated but it’s not. Here’s a video where I show how to do it kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pJiIoKaZsJbUn6M.html My example in the video is for a mixbus but you can do this for a drum bus or whatever you want.

Thank you for replying! The way you showed it wouldve been so much easier than what I done lol. I had all my drum parts in a submix folder. I unpacked all those and routed each instrument to a brand new track for each one. It worked as far as bouncing it into individual wave files like I wanted. But 1 master track like you showed wouldve done just as well. Thank you so much
