Hey!
If you are aiming for a 7.0 or higher in IELTS writing, you absolutely must be able to use referencing accurately. This is obviously not Shelly's opinion, but one of the criteria given for Coherence and Cohesion in the IELTS band descriptors.
But, what is referencing? And what are the common problems that IELTS test-takers face when trying to use it in their work? (Did you see the two examples of referencing there?!!)
That is what Shelly will be teaching you today. Plus, she will also talk about using synonyms accurately in your IELTS writing. And, believe me, that is something almost every IELTS test-takers needs to understand!

By far the best video about referencing on KZfaq. It gives whatever you need to use in Task2 IELTS. I loved the part about this and these and also the dummy subject. absolutely fabulous!

I have have a doubt regarding the verb that was used in the 1st paragraph (18:09) "ensures". Is it ensure or ensures? I read that sentence multiple times but couldn't understand it properly. Please explain
@myieltsclassroom
@myieltsclassroom 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Priya. The sentence says “employing family members ensures”. This is correct. We need a singular verb here because our sentence starts with a gerund (employing). This is a rule many students do not know, which is why they struggle with subject verb agreement. Guess what, though? That is the video I am making for next week!

At 19:31, You said "this refers to employees are willing to sacrifice time and money to achieve this common goal". However, video shows "this" referred as 2 more sentences. Is not something wrong? Or i didn't understand the rule?
@myieltsclassroom
@myieltsclassroom 2 жыл бұрын
Hey. The "this" here refers to the whole of the previous sentence. It was ONE sentence that two sacrifices. There is no problem at all doing this. That is the wonderful thing about "this" - it can be used to refer back to one one whole idea, even if that idea is complicated. That is what makes it so powerful :)

@myieltsclassroom

Hey Hayfa. Thank you so much for your message. "This" (singular) and "those" (plural) each have a "twin" word that is used to discuss items that are far away. For example, I could say "Do you want this pen?" (if one pen is in my hand), or "Do you want that pen?" (if one pen is on the other side of the room). Or "Do you want these pens?" (if there are many pens in my hand) or "Do you want those pens?" (if there are many pens on the other side of the room). However in Academic English, we never use "that" or "those" to reference. All we need are "this" or "these" because everything we are discussing in an essay is figuratively "close" to us. In other words, you will not need to ever use "that" or "those" to reference in an essay. I hope this helps!👌

Hey. This is actually a paid video in my course, and I forgot that students here will not be able to access the page to get the practice activities as they are behind a paywall. Let me try to find a solution when I am back to work next week. For all the other lessons, you will simply need to click on the link in the description and then click on "Resources" under the video on my main teaching website. That will allow you to download the practice materials.

Hey Saab. I really don't think that you can teach speaking well through videos. I will make some basic advice videos for here, but I still think that the live lessons we offer as part of our courses and the intensive course are the best way to teach that part of the test 🙌

@myieltsclassroom
@myieltsclassroom 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Rakib. Thanks for your message. Grammatical Range and Accuracy is just 25% of your score, and even if you used “since” and “although” accurately, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you have the range of sentence structures needed for a 7.0+ in this area. My advice would be to get an expert to give you feedback for chat of the band descriptors so you can understand exactly where you are lacking. I am going to record a video of me marking this week, which I think will also help you. You can also download my free ebook that explains how the band descriptors work (you just need to look in the description of this lesson for the link). 🙌🏻

@@rakibhasan4328 Hey Rakib. Yes, we have three writing packages, all of which will help you to learn the skills you need for a 7+ (and there are definitely no templates, just lessons to teach you how to write independently!) The only difference between the packages is how much marking is included in each one. You can read about them here, but feel free to email me if you have any questions - www.myieltsclassroom.com/pages/writing
