How to use Singapore MRT

I put together this guide to help tourists visiting Singapore figure out the train network. Singapore's MRT runs all over the island, and it's frequent and cheap. After watching this guide you should have the confidence to catch the train and explore the city.

Something worth noting is that if for some reason you stick around inside the MRT system for more than 2 hours, you'll have to go to the ticket office (if using an ezlink card, otherwise with a credit card it's automatically deducted) to pay a $2 admin charge to revalidate ur ticket. Basically don't stay in the system for > 2 hours.

Bayfront, Raffles Place & City Hall had a similar layout where same coloured train lines are on different floors. Newton station is the only station in SG that a commuter had to get out of the fare gates to switch to another colour train line (5 min grace period).

Changi Extension line (CG-CG2 - Part of East west line) has a frequency of 12 mins before 6:30pm, after 6:30pm they will add one train to reduce to 6/7 mins per train.

I think the Singapore Tourist Pass is generally not worth it because the purchase cost is too high. The EZ-Link card is only $5. As for foreign contactless bank cards, there is a $0.60 daily charge, but if you're staying only for about a week, this might be cheaper than the EZ-Link card for you. Your bank might also charge a foreign transaction fee.

I agree, the tourist card is a rip off which is a shame because it makes Singapore look dishonest and greedy, I doubt many actually save and most lose their £10 deposit. Both of your suggestions are spot on.
@person880
@person880 9 ай бұрын
@@byteme9718 I guess it's easy to fall for it when you arrive at the airport and just buy whatever they are offering after being sleep-deprived due to the flight lol. Even if the tourist card offers 3 days of unlimited travel, you would have to be riding transit for several hours a day to even break even with the cost of just using the EZ-Link, so I don't know who would even benefit from this.

I'm just curious, are all MRT lines one-way or two-way? If I take the EW line from Changi Airport - Tanah Merah station until EW8 and transfer to CC9 at Payah Lebar station, does it go directly to CE1 Bayfront - Gardens By The Bay?
@reachingsingapore
@reachingsingapore 5 ай бұрын
Interesting example! From Paya Lebar, trains can go to either Dhoby Ghaut or Marina Bay (inc. Bayfront). My suggestion would be to take the next train regardless and change at Promenade if you are on a Dhoby Ghaut-bound train. When catching the train back from Bayfront, you can take any train. Occasionally the train might not go all the way to Paya Lebar, but you can always get off at Promenade or Stadium (or any of the stations in between) and continue your journey on the same platform with a train that goes to Paya Lebar.

Hi, what is the best option for me if I will only be there for 24hours on my way to London next weekend? I will be traveling on the trains to and from the airport and from Orchard Road to Gardens by the Bay etc. Thank you!
@reachingsingapore
@reachingsingapore Жыл бұрын
Hi! For ticket, I recommend using your own mastercard or visa credit card - this is less hassle than having to buy a ticket when you arrive in Singapore. To and from the airport, the trains run roughly 5:30am (Sundays 6am) to 11:30pm. You will need to change trains a couple of times to get to Orchard Rd from the airport, but every station has a helpful map. For Gardens by the Bay, there are two stations you can use now (a new one just opened recently): Bayfront or Gardens by the Bay (makes sense haha). Bayfront MRT station is connected to Marina Bay Sands as well. See if you can leave some time for Jewel as well, it's got the fancy waterfall as well as some great food options to get a taste of Singapore!

@reachingsingapore
@reachingsingapore 5 ай бұрын
Best way is to use cash. If you're visiting Singapore for a short visit, you might be better off using your credit card for public transport - if it's visa or mastercard it will work on buses and trains in Singapore. There is a fee of 60 cents per day for using a foreign credit card, but there is also a non-refundable S$5 "card cost" for buying an EZ Link card.

Can we take infant stroller in the train and bus? Any additional costs for it?
@reachingsingapore
@reachingsingapore Жыл бұрын
Yes, strollers can be taken on all trains and buses. I recommend avoiding peak hour buses though as it'll be difficult to get the stroller on. You can also use the rear doors to load the stroller. Children are free if they're less than 90cm tall. If they're under 7 it's supposed to be free, but you're supposed to use a concession ticket to show it. Use the wide or staffed gates at a train station as it'll make getting through with a child easier Check out the official website for more details: www.lta.gov.sg/content/ltagov/en/who_we_are/statistics_and_publications/Connect/parentsonPT.html

point to note: take the middle cabin if you have strollers or is using wheelchair as those cabin have an area to park the strollers/wheelchair when boarding. Of course, not all mrt that comes have this feature. Typically the newer mrt have this.

Is MRT crowded throughout the day or only during pick hours? Is it ok to travel in MRT with kids of age 7 and 13? Or cab recommended.
@reachingsingapore
@reachingsingapore Жыл бұрын
I find that it's only crowded during peak hours. There are only a few spots on the network where you might not be able to fit on a train during peak hour (and even then, it's only 2-3 minutes for the next one). It should be ok to catch the MRT with a 7 and 13 year old, and it'll be cheaper than taking a cab. Many of the lines are also driver-less, meaning there are windows at the front and back of the train for the kids to watch the tunnel pass by.

it depends on which station youre at. Some lines are within the same platform (city hall station for example) and there isnt a need to tap out to transfer.
@ministermen
@ministermen 11 ай бұрын
From what I know, you only need to tap in and out for transfers in three stations, most notably, all involving the Downtown Line: 1. Bukit Panjang Downtown Line station to Bukit Panjang LRT and vice versa. 2. Newton Downtown Line station to Newton North-South Line station and vice versa. 3. Tampines Downtown Line station to Tampines East-West Line station and vice versa. The rest of the interchange stations are pretty much within the paid area while transferring from one line to another.

hi :), quick question, I have a 2019 EZ link card from Starbucks SG, would you know if it would still work in 2023?
@reachingsingapore
@reachingsingapore 10 ай бұрын
Hi! EZ link cards generally have a 5 year life, though i believe this is from the time they are produced rather than the first used. That means your card should still have a few months left on it, but you can't tell for sure unless you put it on a reader in Singapore. You can exchange your old card for a new one though and recover the balance (there may be a $1 or $3 service fee deducted from the remaining balance)

If using a credit card how is the fare calculated and do you still tap off?
@reachingsingapore
@reachingsingapore Жыл бұрын
The fare is calculated by the distance you travelled, the same as if you use an EZ Link card. Catching the train 1-2 stations will cost $0.99, and it increases by about 10 cents for every couple of stations. The maximum fare when using a credit card is $2.26. (the actual fare is based on a distance chart that you can find here: www.sbstransit.com.sg/fares-and-concessions) You still need to tap off when using a credit card. It may take a few days for the fare to show on your credit card transaction records.
