Amazing.. Oliver, question, I ve got the boss rc 500 loop pedal and was trying to use it with Ableton.. would it be the same? txs for your videos..just great.. cheers!!

Hey, thanks for the question. I just looked at the manual, and it looks like you can send MIDI CC and program change messages from Boss RC500. So if this is correct, you should be able to control Ableton with it! Note that the looper normally works best with MIDI notes, so if RC500 can’t send these, you may need to get something like BOME MIDI translator to convert the signals! Hope this helps

I don’t generally have latency I’m afraid. I use only Ableton stock plugins, and a good Mac. Probably worth checking your sound card settings

Hi set this up with morningstar its very eratic like sometimes recording straight off other times an intro that is really fast and sometimes without the bars for reference?

I have experienced this kind of thing. For me, it turned out I was sending only MIDI note on messages, without the note off. This makes the looper button go really weird. Is it worth trying that?

Great video. Thanks. Is there a way to set up more lines to loop? So that you can see what the i dividual loops are doing? Then i wouldent ned any other looper. Like the boss rc505...

Yes, this is possible, but not entirely like the Boss 505. I setup an effect chain (or group), and then have 3 loopers in parallel. I can then use them independently on the same track. Or you can have separate tracks with loopers on, if you wish to route them to different outputs. The one problem I have not got round is being able to see all the loopers at the same time! Any ideas welcome!

is there a metronome in the actual looper itself ? awesome video is it mostly about timing then ? to get a good loop cant you get a metronome count in for 1 bar then play your loop ? plz let me know and thanks for the vid

Thanks! The metronome is held in Ableton itself rather than the looper. If you only want a 4 click count in you could create an independent drum track with 4 clicks. The other option is to have the looper set to follow the tempo of your first loop: Set the ‘Tempo Control’ function to manage this. Hope this helps

Don't you have to press the rec button on the guitar channel ?

Ah yes, the record enable button! This is something that you only need to press if you have chosen the monitor setting to be "auto". If you choose "In" as the monitor setting, the signal always flows from the guitar track to the looper track without needing to press record arm. Funnily enough, I'm releasing a video this week that goes into the details of this exact set up, so hopefully see you there!

Great vid ! But i cant get the quantization to work, i want 1 bar count in but it jsut starts recording immediatley no matter what i set it to. Any tips ?

That’s interesting… there is a setting called ‘global quantise’ at the top of the screen on the left. Set this to 1 bar. Also you can set the loopers quantise too

I'm not sure if anyone has used a "Digitech Trio Band Creator" pedal but this has a feature where you can press over dub before the recording and it automatically doesn't engage until the first bar, takes off so much pressure. Is there a VST like this out there, or is there a max for live thing possible?

Really interesting. I took a quick look at the instruction manual, and it looks pretty complex - it’s got an auto band backing that learns your chords! I’ll take a proper look and see if I can emulate something like this. It’s right up my street!

how did you get the multi-purpose button make undo/redo by long pressing without creating an overdub between pressing and that moment, the button realizes that it's being long pressed?

seen... you start long pressing while being in overdub, not in play mode...you should know that the Ableton looper sucks in undoing/redoing and even in deleting, cause everytime you do a long/double press it creates an overdub before doing the long/double press action. no hardware looper is that stupid

Thanks for the comment. I agree the long press is a little unstable, so what I do when performing live is it midi map a different button to undo/redo, it makes it much smoother. Only works if you have another spare button / foot pedal

Ooh interesting. Which version of Ableton do you have? In 11, the looper is shipped on intro, standard and suite. If you check my latest video on the channel, I’ve got a step by step guide, which will show you where the looper sits within the effects

Great video! For the feedback section, you have it set to “Never”. What happens if you select “Always” instead? I am using the Ableton looper, and my feedback is set to Always. When I play and record a track and lay down 3 or 4 vocal loops, the overdubbed loops come through in my speaker. However, when I play back the recording, I only hear each of the vocal loops individually and they are not overdubbed. How can I fix this so that I hear the different overdubbed vocal loops played back in the recording?

I don’t think this issue is to do with Never or Always on the feedback. Always means you hear the sound of the input through the looper, like a monitor button. Have you pressed the main looper button twice, and is the colour of the bars in looper turquoise? This means they are overdubbing

@@olivergearing thanks for the quick response! I figured out the issue and solution. I need to set up a separate track that takes the output from the looper track as an input. This new track records all of the overdubbed loops during recording. One would think that simply recording a looper track would do this but it only records the individual loops when recording, not overdubbed. I get it now. 😁

You don’t get it with the free ‘lite’ version you sometimes get free with other purchases. It’s on one of the paid options: ‘intro’, ‘standard’ or ‘suite’. Thanks for watching!

Could you show how to set up sustain pedal as looping triger? I'm thinking to get one since it's the cheapest option right now.

No worries! Put your sustain pedal into the keyboard that you are using. Make sure the MIDI is flowing through by pressing it, and check the top right of Ableton - an orange square should light up. Then, enter MIDI mapping mode by pressing Control M or Apple M, then hit the Looper button (the big button on looper). Then press the sustain pedal, and it should work!

Can you explain why you need the two tracks? Why can't you just put a looper on your guitar track?

It’s a matter of preference, but for me I always keep my input track separate from my looper track. It means I have greater flexibility, for example if I want the looper to be quieter than the main guitar, this makes it really easy.

Hi - not specifically within Ableton - it doesn’t have connectivity with computers, but you can use it in your incoming guitar signal as a pedal. To be honest, the Looper function (as in this video) is just as good, and is native to Ableton. Get yourself set up with a MIDI controller and Looper and you’re off!
