Yes! This is one I don’t hear many musicians use a lot. I use it as a passing chord to both major and minor, bright (open) and dark (clustered) voicings bring variance to it. Great job as usual on this one, Sean!

yeah I agree, the #9#5 is definitely used a lot more. I literally had to figure out how I wanted to use this voicing a few minutes before the vid doc

Noticed that this chord resolves to a M7 very nicely..I liked you easy forming hint and will use it. I play a lot of big band charts...very applicable.

Love this chord! How I quickly form it is thinking about the tritone. So for the C 7 (b9b5) the tritone is E and Bb. The other dominant chord that shares this tritone is the Gb 7. So anytime I want to play a C dominant 7/9/13, I can replace the C triad in my right with a Gb triad
@Hallixon
@Hallixon 3 жыл бұрын
Same way I think of it. I just find the tritone interval from C (G flat) and play its major triad over C-E.

Coming up I've worked with several young musicians who barely knew any scales or basic theory. But everytime I did a fat chord or a quick run they'd hop up like show me that 😉. I'd quickly be like you can barely play and have no foundation so I'll give them the scale behind the riff and the basic theory and chord behind the voicing. What good is playing all that when you don't know the root behind it? Players be trying to run before they walk

that is so true. when you understand the WHY and HOW of a chord, you will have more appreciation and a better understanding of the chord. It will help to not overuse it everywhere.

Great teaching! It's basically acting like a Tritone substitution using a major triad of the flat 5.👍

@SeanWilsonPiano

they're technically the same thing, but I really like the b9b5 designation because of how easily it can be compared against the #9#5, so its not a theoretical preference
