How to use the Lee Neck Sizing Collet Die (243 Win)

5:40 - Lee actually suggests a 1/8 turn now so that the fingers of the collet hits where the gaps would have been. 1/4 or 1/2 will just put the collet fingers where the brass had already been touched. Great video. Thanks.

they suggest, but they don't know what causes under sizing at all. The mandrel top lip isn't enough to keep the base of it away from the inside base of the case head causing the collet not close enough to size ( I used a marker to color the mandrel base to see the contact, and it does). Meanwhile Lee is telling you to turn down the die, turn it down more, some more, you need more pressure on your press handle ! I told a rep about the mandrel lip and he was surprised but only said that it sounds like there is a dimensional (length) problem ? Then crickets. I put a washer between the collet sleeve and mandrel.... fixed. You can use pressure or cam over. Camming over to some is a no no, but if you make very slight adjustments to find that sweet spot it's fine.

I use the collet die for my .243 and my .30-06. I haven't done any testing to confirm, but I believe most of the brass stretching in these rifle cases is a result of pulling the neck expander ball through with the traditional die. I think I'm getting a slightly superior neck size process with the mandrel/collet, and I avoid much of the stretching. I use a Redding body sizing die to bump the should/size the body. The Redding die is next on the list, Vaughn precision suggested I get one for that so I will. I will take some measurements for my next video and compare stretch between dies, should be really interesting to see. I do think the mandrel is giving me better overall neck tension vs only at the edge of the mouth on the case with the FL die

Loads, if you want to be amused/disgusted, take the expander ball out of any other die, press it, and look at how insanely overworked the brass is! I’ll never use another ball expander die. It’s nuts to have the last step of brass prep destroy all that hard work and overwork the brass! Even on my 308 AR ammo, I don’t use an expander ball. I full length size it with a die with the neck hogged out to resize the body and bump the shoulder back, THEN I use the collet neck sizer and for perfect finish, the collet crimp die for a soft touch. Perfect semiauto bliss.

...that's exactly how I use the die for .223. I do a double neck resizing, twisting about 120° between sizing. The secret is don't be afraid to use a little force on the second press. Occasionally. (1:100) has low tension. Makes very accurate ammunition. I anneal brass after 3 sizings, Thanks for the video!

Thanks for the quality video. Another great advantage I found with the Lee neck sizer is it actually uniforms neck thickness. Especially if you do three compressions turning 1/3 for 2nd & 3rd. I'm sure that I'm using more like 35-40 pounds of force. No need to turn necks though!

Good job on explaining the process. Just a couple pointers about precision related to neck sizing. It does work the first time you neck size and on some cases even the 2nd time. Then you must FL resize. Also, since your brass isn't neck turned to provide a consistent neck tension, and if you're shooting a 2-lug bolt; ensure you have the thick/thin sides of the brass turned to the 12/6 position when closing the bolt in order to set the thick/think sides to be in-line with the lugs. If you don't do this, the harmonics of the brass when fired will form a whip action and will introduce a cross harmonic to the barrel and throw accuracy/precision off as you increase distance. David Tubb talks about this in his reloading videos more at length. It is only when using a 2-lug bolt you need to be aware of this. Secondly, shooting once fired brass against virgin brass isn't a good test. Virgin brass is sized at around .005" bump to fit in any chamber and is cut short on length. When you pull the trigger the shell will be shoved forward in the chamber until it stops, then the firing pin pushes in the primer far enough to ignite it. This greater headspace decreases accuracy in loose chambers regardless of how you handle the virgin brass during first loading.

Good video and if ok I will add two more points as I have these dies and have reloaded over 2k 223 cases so far this year alone. One: after you use the die about 100 times you will find the collet will stick into the upper piece. Take it apart and sand the collet end with some 600 black sand paper and then sand inside the upper piece until you have removed most of the debris. Then apply some case sizing lubricant on both areas that you just sanded and return to die. You will do this about 20 times and each time the sticking collet takes longer and longer before it sticks again. Mine now is at 400 uses before collet sticks. Second: buy a second die as they are not that expensive and file of the primer stick off and the end of the mandrel so it is rounded. Now if you made a mistake with loading you can just remove the powder resize the case neck without losing the primer. 😀

I have a tip: Take the die apart and polish the collet to a mirror finish. ( I use my Worksharp belt knife sharpener down to 6000grit then finish on the leather honing belt with Flitz) Then, use a light dab of pure moly grease on the collet on assembly. Incredibly more smooth and better feel. Also, you can watch the collet from the bottom. When it bottoms “up” a tad more turn for the camming effect for consistency. Also, an eighth turn for a second squeeze makes any collet marks smooth out. The die even makes the neck thickness consistent without turning for perfectly and consistent neck tension. Warning, you CAN blow the plug out of the top if you run the die too tight. Lastly, for perfection, finish off with the Lee Collet crimp die. (Trust me, makes that whole adjusting the bullet to the lands thing a waste of time)

One thing I noticed you didn't discuss was concentricity. I saw your other comment about the neck tension with your 6.5 version. Have you gotten into checking your run out on your bullets yet and the variations of your components. Makes a big difference. Been watching your videos since you started. Really enjoy them. Suggest getting a brass outside neck trimmer. While trimming, insert a 6mm guide rod inside neck, but first neck size to accommodate 6mm guide rod.

I’m a real newbie but I can count and as soon as I started hearing guys talk about 1/2 or 1/4 turn and push again I thought ‘dudes, use the math..... a quarter or half turn just goes back more or less to the same point in the petal lines area’ Some folks doing reloading shouldn’t be if they can’t do simple math. You can actually cam the press over on the die, if you are careful. If you set up the press and die correctly with a slight cam over on the die, you will eliminate the human “hand feel”. I learned this after hundreds of cases I did one day and my hand was shot...and I was getting inconsistent neck tension on the cases. ( and you can use them ,if you take the collet out ,for a decapping die )

This is a great point to make...the cam over inceases the repeatability by taking the human factor out of it. One thing I will say is the lock ring on the die is just held in place with an Oring, this is a problem (imo), I have to setup the die everytime and find that sometimes the neck tension is very light...

Great video. Interested to see if neck sizing increases accuracy over full length sizing. There seems to be some debate in the shooting community about which is more accurate. Looking forward to seeing your results.

Zombie Head Hunters Unless you are shooting Benchrest competition and own a custom Benchrest rifle with a tight chamber and no extractor, there is no debate. Just go to a Precision Rifle Series or F class competition and see if you can find anyone neck only sizing. You won't. If you want to understand why, get Glen Zediker's book "Handloading for Competition." There's a whole chapter devoted to the debate of FL versus neck only sizing.

Zombie Head Hunters No problem. I wasted a lot of money on neck sizing dies. It seems to be a rabbit hole many of us go down and spend a lot of time and money on. Look at Redding Type-S FL bushing die or Forster FL die. Master headspace and how to use a FL die to set back case shoulder 2-3 thousands. And most importantly, remove expander balls from your dies and use a Sinclair expander mandrel to expand case necks and set uniform neck tension. All of that is in the book and more.

I got the same set up and when I used the neck sizing die, I didn't know you had to turn it another 1 3/4 turn after it touches.. i just turned it too it touched and the necks would already come out way to big

My Hornady 4x fired brass measures .271 after I neck size it with this die (no annealing). I wonder if you have the smaller mandrel? my die has the .242 mandrel.

Rotate brass ONE HALF TURN ...180 Degrees ...then size again. NOT 1/4 turn...besides that..GOOD VIDEO ! Glad to see you took die apart... showed viewers the parts and how they work.

Yeah I may have said 1/4 turn but I usually turn it a random amount any way I am not that worried about a perfect rotation or anything

I go for 1/3 to 3/8 of a turn and neck size again. I found that if you press to hard using setup in instructions that it would collapse and bulge the body not the neck cause hard chambering and thus now I full length size and trim first. Annealer arrives today. Then reload.

Hi, I accidentally resized a case without the mandrel in the die. It ruined the case. But would it have damaged the die? It seams okay. It happened because Lee has not got the 7.62x39 collet sorted. I had Forgot to put a mandrel back it. From switching between the two mandrels. I had a 303 mandrel shortened to fit so it would resize at .309 instead of .306 as the mandrel it comes with is for .308 projectiles. Most 7.62x39 have .310 barrels. The 303 mandrel needs .005” taken off. .310 projectiles are a little too loose. I may also try the quarter turn to see if it helps. Thanks for your reply, Brent

Well done, very detailed explanation. I learn something new every time I watch your videos. I've been reloading handgun cartridges for years, 9mm and 45acp specifically, and am just getting set up to begin loading 223. All of these extra case prep steps are new to me and I want to learn everything I can. At what point is it necessary to anneal the case necks?

It’s not absolutely necessary til probably the fifth to eighth Reloading. But it’s best to anneal every other time if possible. There’s so much 223 out there I would just get new after 5 firings or so but I don’t shoot crazy amounts

Depends on the brass. Some pmc 223 brass I reloaded only took 2 reloads till I got split necks.

Some decappers do I don’t think mine does. Nothing to worry about that helps prevent breaking pins when brass has offset flash holes

Logan, I just found this video, so don't know if you'll get the comment. Eagle Eye Shooting has been coaching me in the art of making more accurate ammo, and I have been exploring everyone's videos on this subject. Do you neck turn, initially, after your first neck sizing? Since you're my 'neighbor', I try to follow your videos, and I think between yours and Eagle Eye's videos, I may someday make decent ammunition

Man, everyone has their own 'recipe' for getting more accuracy, and hopefully one day I'll be able to put together some kind of a program that will work. I've always just full-length resized, some content providers say, yes full-length resize, some say neck size only, etc. I just want to get my 1-1.25" groups cut in half so that I can start making the longer shots

I was recently talking to an FTR competition shooter ranked 9th nationally and he full length resizes. If it’s done correctly that’s the way to go!

@@WestDesertShooter Competition rifle tolerances are a lot tighter than production rifle tolerances. Comp rifles and die sets are all custom fit in .0005 - .001 range. Production fits are typically very sloppy especially in cheaper rifles.

I know this is a year ago but the answer to this question is, if you decap and reprime at the same time you can’t clean your primer pocket and I have found that I get better “feel” when I reprime with a hand primer instead of using the press.

Question: how do you measure how much pressure you're exerting on the arm? If you apply the suggested 25lbs on one case then say 35lbs on the next, you will get different neck tension. How do i get consistent pressure regardless how many lbs i apply?

The mandrel is what determines neck tension. As long as you apply at least 25lbs you’re good to go. Don’t snap the arm off the press but at least 25 lbs

Jimbo newguy it doesn’t matter if you use 25, 28 53, or a hundred, (don’t do that it will blow the cap off lol) you are not going to size the neck any smaller than that mandrel period. As long as your using sufficient force to accomplish that you aren’t going to size it down any further. I personally don’t cam mine over.

I did not, I dont believe you have to. the die only touches the case when it has stopped moving through the die and it releases as soon as pressure is taken off the press, nothing in this video was lubed and i think they turned out good

No lube needed for the collet neck sizing die seeing as it sizes with a collet and not a bushing.

I neck size with the Lee collet die also & never had any issues up to this point! I would think after a few several times of neck sizing eventually I'll have to Full length size & trim the brass. So far so good!!

Just bought for rem 260. USELESS. No matter how I set the die up it has absolutely no effect on the neck size. No interior contact on the case. neck remains at .274 of an inch. Will be returning it ASAP

You didn't set it up correctly, you have to have the decapping post installed and compress the collet to make it work.
