Thanks this is so easy to understand even for me, because even though Im an Adobe Photography Plan subscriber I only ever use Lightroom, because even though Photoshop is available to me I rarely go near it because I find it complicated and non intuitive, so many many thanks for this great walk trough of this process.

yes you aren't wrong but this tool still works for quick and simple selections, especially around people! But yes, the pen tool would be more accurate and yield a better result out of the gate.

Excellent tutorial! When using the Object Selection tool in PS, purple overlays appear wherever PS seems to think it's found an object. And these overlays are usually much more accurate than the results I get with the tool otherwise. Unfortunately, I can't predictably do much with these overlays, as clicking on them doesn't usually do anything. Sometimes, however, double clicking on an overlay will generate an actual selection (with marching ants), but again, nothing usually happens. Anyone know how to use the overlays properly? If I could somehow consistently turn them into actual selections, I think I'd be able to build better object specific selections, but at the very least, I'd be faster. Thanks in advance for any help!

I have had a similar experience there with the overlays. Although those were added after this vid was made. I think it just helps as like a reference to what could be selected without needing to actually try since you can hover and see the overlay area beforehand

Question please If I have my selection made, like you did here, can you please explain the difference between creating a layer mask and creating a new layer “via Copy”. Reason I ask, is I am confused as to what I should choose and why? What is the advantage or disadvantage on using either or? I need to design my tattoo and use many small selections of “parts of a selection” by this is mean.. example….a branch from a tree and add that onto a different section of that tree, to make the tree have more branches. I use make layer via copy so i can easily manipulate the selection by repositioning it anywhere I want…but it creates a huge amount of layers and it gets confusing after a while 🥴. Am i doing this process right or is there easier ways to achieve what i want? Love your videos and learning heaps I only just started using photoshop and so it’s a steep learning curve. Thanks in advance, maybe you can make a video about ….How to deal with selections and how to use and manipulate them 🤔🤷‍♂️

Layer via copy takes a cut out of your selection and places it on a new layer, deleting all the surrounding pixels and data. That means you cannot go back and refine your cut out. Therefore you are working "destructively" since it makes permanent changes. Adding a layer mask applies your selection onto a mask, giving the same result as layer via copy, except no data is deleted. If you want to add back parts of your cut out, you can do so with the layer mask. This way you are working nondestructively since there is never a permanent change to your layer. As for your tattoo situation, I am not sure if I fully understand but it sound like you are wanting to add multiple selections to the same mask? In that case, you can make multiple selections (with any tool at any time, it doesn't matter), but then adding to a new layer mask or going layer via copy, you can fill your selection with white on a black layer mask by setting white to your foreground color and pressing ALT/OPT + DELETE to fill selection area. With your main layer mask selected, you could continue to add to the same mask without having to create a whole bunch of layers. Hopefully that answers your question or provides some type of insight!

Now what do we do with it? e.g how to save it? If I want to use the pic by transforming to another picture I also get the deleted background.

At 0:28, he's talking about using the "Object Removal" Tool, but I'm trying to understand the "Object Selection" Tool so ultimately I can Remove a Background from an Object. I'm using Photoshop 24.0.0, and when I do use the "object selection" tool that he is showing here in this video, and drag the box around the object I want to select, Photoshop does not create the dotted line around my image like the way it does in his tutorial here. It's funny, over the last few hours, I've watched at least 10 different Photoshop tutorials about how to remove a background from an object, and I can't get anything to look like, or perform like, the way they're being shown in the various tutorials. I don't know if the problem is that everyone on KZfaq is using different versions of Photoshop so the software behaves differently and has different buttons and menus, but this is a nightmare just trying to do the most basic thing on Photoshop.... remove a background.

Yo I'm having the same issue. I learned blender and wanted to take my stuff over to photoshop and I'm amazed at how many problems I'm running into (I understand I'm learning a new app, but still) lol I found they still have bugs when overlaying an image on top of another background.. really. Blender is free and way more complex with seemingly less bugs bc they fix them fast
