RETINOL: * Can reverse signs of aging, * Works by speeding skin turnover up * !!! Retinol can make skin dry !! !! * Squalene is good at hydrating skin. Squalene is an antioxidant. USE RETINOL ONLY IN THE EVENING ( 3x/week) Always start with the lowest percentage 0,2% and then you can move to higher! (0,2% 0,5%, 1,0 %) * 1st step - Always use cleanser!!! * 2nd step - Optional is Toner ( AHA or BHA should be not included) * 3rd step (should be not included at the beginning) - LEAVE ON EXFOLIANT GLYCOLIC ACID (AHA OR BHA) * 4th step - Water-based serums Hyaluronic acid and Niacinamide CAN USE BEFORE APPLYING RETINOL, but maybe better use it in the morning routine * Retinol should be applied AFTER water-based solutions * Use only 2 drops. Avoid eyes or lip area. * Use can mix moisturize with retinol and then apply it. * RETINOL SHOULD BE PUT IN THE FRIDGE!!!!

@MelissaVanDijkOfficial
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
@@tayyabajamil8619 Hey :) What Retinol do you use? Also, what strength (%) do you use? And are you new to Retinol, or have you already use Retinol products? Using your Retinol first and then Moisturizer or Moisturizer and then your Retinol depends on what your skin can tolerate. If you do not have sensitive skin and you introduce it correctly to your skin, you can use your Retinol first and then Moisturizer on top. However, if you have a bit more sensitive skin, using it the other way around may be best :) I recommend following the steps in the video :) Also, use your Retinol in the PM :)

Hi Melissa! I'm 19 and just recently found your channel because I recently got hooked to starting my own stable skincare routine and you are one of the very few people on KZfaq that helped me A LOT to determine what actives I need. I have some closed and open comedones and a very open pores around my T zone and C zone area so right now, I bought (through online) The Ordinary Retinol in 0.2% because it's my very first time using it and also the Quickfx Pimple Eraser Recovery Concentrate Serum which has 10% Niacinamide and 1% Salicylic Acid (which I wished they lessen the percentage of the Niacinamide 😭). I have used Salicylic Acid before but since I'm starting off with a new product, I want to start it slow and also with Retinol by using it both of these at least 2 to 3 times a week. I watched your other video where you told us that I can used any product with Salicylic acid on it in the morning and the Retinol in the evening or even used both of these alternately at night. I decided that I will do the latter where I alternate these each evening. Anyway, my question is should I and can I still used my moisturizer AFTER if I already dilute it with the retinol? Or should I make this as my last step since technically I already have moisturizer in my face partner up with retinol when doing the diluted method? For moisturizer, I am using the Hada Labo Hydrating Water Gel since it's lightweight and my skin type is sometimes in between of being a combination and sometimes oily.
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! :) Overall the way you want to get started and what you want to do later on sounds great! As for your Retinol and diluting it with your moisturizer, it does not reduce the strength of your Retinol; your Retinol just needs much longer to penetrate the skin, which reduces sensitivity. If you plan on mixing your Retinol with your moisturizer, that's enough. You do not need to reapply your moisturizer on its own again. Also, if you can, I recommend not using a moisturizer in the evening when using your Retinol. Instead, use it during the day (if you should feel the need).

Hi Melissa! First of all, I want to thank u for all the information you share about the ordinary’s products, it’s so helpful 🥺 just a quick question: in the PM I use: - Hyaluronic acid - niacinamide - Granactive Retinoid - cerave mosturiser Is it ok? I follow this PM routine everyday, in this order. Idk, in the video you said that it is best to keep it simple, so should I avoid niacinamide and use only Hyaluronic acid, Granactive Retinoid and a mosturiser? Also, is it bad to use granactive retinoid daily in the PM? Thanks a lot🥺💖
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
Hey :) Your PM routine looks great! You can use it daily in the evening if your skin can tolerate (meaning not getting any irritation like redness, pilling, or dryness), which can sometimes occur. Still, it is more likely to happen with the Ordinary Retinols and not so much with their Granactive Retinoids.

Hi Melissa! Thank you so much for such a detailed review. I have a question. Surprisingly my skin didn’t irritate at all to retinol 0.5 in squalane although I have very sensitive skin prone to rosacea in summer and dermatitis in winter. Does this mean that I can apply it around eyes? I am very concerned about the appearing wrinkle/mimic lines. I’m turning 25 soon.
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, 😀 You always can apply it to the eye contour; however, depending on the thickness of the skin, it quickly leads to burning and/or stinging. People tend to use it daily and end up with irritation. If you do tolerate it well, you can, of course, use it on the eye contour. :)

Thanks for the informative video and for being super responsive! I actually started right on 1% and use 1 drop every 2-3 times per week. I've gotten more pimples than usual a bit less than 2 weeks in; is this the general time frame in which the purging takes place? Should I go down to .2%/.5%, or just stick it out? I haven't gotten any other kinds of irritation aside from that and some flakiness.
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, generally, you can get irritation or an increase in acne during the first weeks. However, I have had many subscribers/viewers telling me that it did not work out for them and that it lasted for months, so they stopped using the product and switched to a different formulation/brand. I do feel that sometimes the Squalane is causing the issue. (not sure) So you need to give it some time , but if it does not stop, I recommend changing the brand/formulation and see if that helps :)

Hi Melissa! You are a skincare game-changer.. thank you for selflessly putting these videos up for us. I have one question - can we use cerave sa cleanser + ordinary lactic acid + retinol on skin in this order? Or should I use alpha arbutin in stead of lactic acid.. I know cerave already has niacinamide so not sure we can use both cerave sa cleanser + ordinary niacinamide before retinol?
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
Hey :) If you are new to Retinol and are still going through the 'build-up tolerance' process. I do not recommend using the Cerave SA cleanser nor Lactic Acid in that specific routine since it can lead to irritation. I recommend using a gentle cleanser when using Lactic Acid and Retinol for the first time. For example, you could use your SA cleanser in the AM but use a gentle one in the PM. Also, alternate between Lactic Acid and Retinol or use Lactic Acid in the AM followed by SPF and Retinol in the PM. That's possible too. You may be able to use them together once your skin has fully adjusted to your Retinol, but I do not recommend it in the beginning.

@MelissaVanDijkOfficial
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
Well, from what I have read and from what I have experienced, there is no need to add a moisturizer if you have oily skin, especially with the Squalane, it's already oily enough. I also think that The Ordinary retinol isn't excellent for oily skin. But this may be a personal preference. I prefer Paula's Choice Retinols or La Roche Posay since their serum-like texture blends very well into the skin. I think that you will have the same outcome, but the feeling may be better on oily skin. 😉 Generally speaking, this is very individual, and you need to test it :)

Yes, that would be a good option. You can also try to use it a couple of times on the other days and just adjust it. Use them together see how this works, wait a few days if everything is OK to do it again etc. Just do not use them too quickly too often, even if you think that everything is fine, it will most likely lead to irritation! YOu will get a feeling for it after a while 🙂

Hm, well technically, they do not conflict. But I think that is too much. Wouldn't apply it this way. Maybe like this: AM: Cleanser Buffet Niacinamide (Spf) PM: Cleanser Retinol 0,5% But make sure to introduce the Retinol properly into your routine. Also, you are OK to use the routine as you wrote. @@harasikswokturb6607 Yes, it would help if you did not use multiple retinoids serums. The reason for this is that it can lead to skin irritation. Technically it can have the same benefits as tretinoin (retinoid). As retinol converts into the same substance that the skin needs to work on your acne. Should I use retinol or other products? My goal is go have a hydrated and youthful (glowing) looking skin. I would like to have smaller pores on my face and prevent wrinkles. Now I only have fine lines on my forehead and some around my eyes but nothing drastic. Thank you so much! 🙏

@MelissaVanDijkOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Henri, The order is correct. The only issue that I have is the Hyaluronic Acid 2% and after that using the Vitamin C Suspension. That often leads to pilling (flaky little bits), And the product tends to sit on top. But if you have dry skin, it may work well. You need to test it. You can use retinol a few times a week that may be very beneficial. For that, I recommend creating a second evening routine. PM 2 (2-3 times a week) Cleanser Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Retinol (0,2% or 0,5%) Moisturizer (Optional) If you have very oily skin, I recommend trying it without a moisturizer, especially in the evening. It tends to work better for most people. Try to give the skin only what it needs and experiment to find the right frequency.

Hello, do you have oily skin 🤔? Well, this is just the recommendation, but I experienced flaking around my mouth as well, but my cheeks and mouth area are very dry especially during the winter. So I assume that if the skin is oilier, or if you have resistant skin it may be possible to use it on a daily base right away without any irritation. But since a lot of people struggle with the application, I am somewhat cautious and telling people how they can introduce it properly to avoid skin irritation. Generally speaking, there are many different skin types, and the once that have oily resistant skin are the once that can apply basically anything without concerns. However, they are unlikely to see huge improvements, or it takes them longer. It seems to be very individual, and I am happy for you that it worked right away :)

@@dearestjillian Here is some general information from The Ordinary: Patch testing - We recommend avoiding unprotected solar exposure, gradually incorporating one new product into your regimen at a time and applying test patches first to see what works best for your skin. For more information on how to do a test patch, please visit our Patch Test Guide on The Ordinary website. Order of Application - We suggest using no more than 3 serum formulations in a single routine for optimal skin penetration. Generally, we recommend applying water-based solutions first, followed by oil formulations, and finally cream/suspension formulas. If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern (the product that targets the most important concern should go first). About 2-3 drops of each serum and 1 pea-sized amount of creams should be enough for the full face and neck. Acne - Just as a note - none of our products can be considered medical treatments for acne, so we suggest consulting with your physician to see what may work best for your skin. :-) Pregnancy - While each ingredient has been tested and is considered safe for topical application, DECIEM products have not been tested on pregnant or breastfeeding people. When pregnant or breastfeeding, it is recommended to avoid any skincare products containing retinoids such as formulations with Granactive Retinoid or Retinol.

Wow, you are fortunate. But half a dropper it's not needed. It will not have better effects if you use more. However, the company will be happy. 😉

thank you for this video!! i'm currently 16 and planning on trying the 0.2% retinol once a week as a way to ease myself into using it since i've heard it's better to start earlier than later. my only concern is that i'm a bit young to use it however after extensive research it seems to be completely safe for me to use. my family ages TERRIBLY so i really want to tackle this issue before it actually becomes an issue. thank you so much for all the info!

I suggest using a good sunscreen (ideal mineral) during the day and being consistent about it because sun damage is the cause of most problems/wrinkles we get early on our skin. So you do not need to use a retinol product yet.

Hi Melissa! I have just started using the ordinary and your videos helped me so much! It is well-informed and very detailed you're a legend I have another question, can I use niacinamide and zinc before applying retinol 0.2%? my night routine cleanser > toner > niacinamide > retinol > moisturiser
