www.pianocareer.... In this video, you'll see how the piano pedal mechanism works and you'll also discover the functions of the 2 standard pedals: the right pedal (also called the sustain or the damper pedal) and the left pedal (also called the soft pedal or the una corda pedal).
Don't miss the 2nd part of this video ( • How to Use the Piano P... ), where I describe the 3 main pedaling techniques - and my free article on the same topic:

Bcause of your wonderful tutorial, my understanding of the sustain pedal as well as how the hammers and dampers function will make learning proper pedaling much clearer to me in not only knowing why it is important but also exactly how and why it functions as it does. I’m actually a guitarist and drummer but I started piano this year at 50 years old so one of the major uphill battles I face is a lifetime of biomechanics that impede techniques required for fluent piano playing. For instance, as an athlete and coach for nearly 40 years in my chosen sport amateur wrestling (HUGE in Soviet Union!), my hands and feet have been trained to work together, not independently. Playing guitars for 28 years requires both hands to work dependently on each other. Alternatively, piano requires strict independence of not only right and left hand but also adding feet on the pedals. This means I must not only learn hand independence through technical exercises but, much more daunting than that, I must UN-learn 50 years of life which is a nightmare of epic proportions. I took up drums 3 years ago which has helped me develop some limb independence which has helped me w piano but very little. However, I love piano regardless of my shortcomings and it is a lifelong journey as is guitar, drums, athletics, and education so I will stay w it and continue learning through your wonderful videos. You are such an amazing Piano Teacher and pianist, Thank You for sharing so many beautifully informative videos through your channel. 👏🙂🎹

Thank you, John! :) Yes, piano playing requires excellent coordination (wait until you play a 5-voice Fugue by Bach!) - but I do recommend a change of perspective: we don't play piano because we ALREADY have good coordination; we play piano to DEVELOP a wide range of mental, aural and technical skills, including coordination. This art is the ultimate 'gym' for our brain, and it helps to maintain (and improve) our mental youth and flexibility. Starting at 50 is not late at all - some of our beginners at PianoCareerAcademy are 70+, and rocking it! ;)

@@pianocareer I have never taken such an interesting perspective as you wrote on why we play piano and how each daily practice can be seen as incrementally enhancing all of those various areas in our mind and body. It truly is the ultimate “gym” as you said, that is an incredibly accurate statement now when I see it from a different perspective rather than just how horribly difficult it is each day. Thank you for a beautiful perspective; I’m actually going to print it and post it up so I read each day why I play piano. (And I cannot even fathom a Bach 5 voice fugue lol! If you saw me play, you’d probably just say, maybe you can play the Triangle or a Cowbell. 🙃) Thank You again for a beautiful perspective, you have changed my mindset. :)

I am definitely going to subscribe. I have had these ideas about relaxed shoulders and pedal techniques explained to me in the past, but it wasn't until I started watching your videos that it makes sense! You have an incredibly well rounded approach to the piano that I have never seen before. I am at the point where I have technique, but struggle greatly with expression. Your videos, however, make me feel ready to take on any piece and unleash actual feeling into my playing! Thank-you so much!!

Hi Angelino! You're very welcome! ;) Yes, the sustain pedal should always be pressed with the right foot. When a piece does not require pedaling, the right foot is on the floor, in front of this pedal. The same applies to the left foot :).

My pleasure! ;) Also, please don't forget that learning how to use the pedals correctly is just one little element of the complex art of piano playing. In order to make good progress, you need to develop a wide spectrum of skills (in a harmonious progressive manner): hearing and imagination, technique, expression, reading, theory & analysis, correct practice etc. (and, of course, pedaling). You can do so by following my step-by-step Video Course for Beginners (available on PianoCareerAcademy.com). Good luck! ;)

Very good explanation. For me in the past I have learned to practice without pedal first. Because the sustain can cover the details of the notes themselves. Note depression, note holding. Then after learning the technique involved in the song I add the pedal requirement. Just my own advice. Been playing a long time. Your videos are well done!

Thank you! :) Of course - practicing without pedal first is very important! This is a professional approach that I recommend for most of the pieces I teach (you could check out some of my free tutorials dedicated to specific pieces). Enjoy your practice! ;)

Well demonstrated. Examples are really helpful. I am an absolute beginner. Collected my piano today. A 1910 Bechstein 10 upright. Looking forward to learning (after she gets a fine tuning). Although 49, I feel it's never too late to learn something new. I started painting at 35 and now do it professionally. Desire is the key. I love the quote by Henry Ford: 'If you think you can, or if you think you can't, you're right.' I have some questions about the Theory of Music, and wonder if you have videos that cover such topics, for example. Thank you.

Hello, can you make a tutorial on that impressive harp-like "rain of notes" you played at the beginning?

Hi! That was just a harp Cadence from an orchestral piece (before launching my Piano Coaching Program, I worked as the piano soloist of my country's National Radio Orchestra). When the harpist was on sick leave, I used to play her parts on the piano :))). I don't think that my other subscribers would be interested in learning this Cadence, though LOL.

+Alexandru Gheorghe My free KZfaq videos are just the 'tip of the iceberg', so to speak - tiny samples of what you can find in the Members Area of PianoCareerAcademy.com. For this reason, these videos are not related to each other - and creating playlists would not make the browsing experience any easier. It's much better to simply go to my channel and click 'Videos' (kzfaq.infovideos) - this will display all my free tutorials in chronological order. Another method is going to my free piano blog (PianoCareer.com) - and opening the Archives (www.pianocareer.com/archives/) - this page displays the links to ALL my free articles and videos (in other words, all my KZfaq videos are embedded on PianoCareer.com as well, and each video is 'accompanied' by an additional article, which you cannot find here on KZfaq). Enjoy! ;)

Fantastic video, thank you! I have a new yamaha grand piano, but the left pedal hardly makes any difference in the volume or timbre of the sound. I asked the technician about this in the first tuning, and he just said that the left pedal doesn't do much on a grand piano?? Also, the sustain pedal makes a knocking noise with the dampers every time it is released. Is this normal?
@pianocareer
@pianocareer 3 жыл бұрын
On a grand piano, the left pedal shifts the entire mechanism horizontally, so that the hammer only strikes one string - hence the term 'una corda pedal'. As a result, the sound changes intensity and color. The knocking noise is not normal - but it could be caused by an incorrect pedaling technique (for example, if you release the pedal too abruptly). More information here: www.pianocareer.com/piano-pedal/bio-mechanics-healthy-piano-pedaling-technique/ www.pianocareer.com/piano-pedal/piano-pedals-art/ www.pianocareer.com/piano-pedal/piano-pedals-style/

I have an old upright piano (Hobart M. Cable) which has two pedals (same as this grand piano). However, the left pedal does not shift dampers to make them hit 2 out of 3 string. Instead, it makes hammers closer to the strings (half normal distance) but they still hit all 3 strings. ِIs the left pedal designed differently by different Piano manufacturers?
@pianocareer
@pianocareer 9 жыл бұрын
Koosha Tahmasebipour Hi! The action you describe is typical for upright pianos - while in case of grands, the hammers are shifted to the right when you press the left pedal. This is also explained in my free article on the same topic (which you can find if you follow the 3rd link in the description box, this one: www.pianocareer.com/piano-pedal/piano-pedals-art/).

There are a few things for how to learn piano Try practicing about an hour every day, or just 1/2 an hour if you can't find time. Do more practice whenever you have more time. For example, on weekends you can do more than 1 hour, perhaps two or three, or even more. This is helpful because it pulls you out of the routine of piano playing, and lets you practice more and perfects the pieces you play. (I learned about these and more from Denelle Piano Lesson site )
