There is a hidden trick function inside the camera where many people don't know ;that is : Press the Marco Button and press the front ring at the same time, which the snap distance could be swiftly changed by rotating the front ring while your camera is in the position of snap mode. It is really helpful especially at the street photography shooting.Check it out.

Great tutorial, I liked the explanation of how to use at night, i.e about the smaller aperture and extra distance. I also liked the way you used snap with foreground blur through the shop window. This one video I think really explains why the GR series rock!! Snap focus is so simple but so empowering, but I can imagine purists disagring with me, may be. Just my opinion. Excellent video. I do have a question and I hope you reply. Does a camera feel like a durable piece of equipment or does it feel a bit cheap. I'm really considering purchasing one of these GR3's. Do you recommend a screen protector for the screen?
@EYExplore
@EYExplore 3 жыл бұрын
I feels very durable. I beleive the interior is made of magnesium alloy, which is a very tough and light material also used in pro SLRs. It's not weather-sealed though as far I'm aware. But it certainly does not feel cheap. I think a screen protector is a good idea since you'll often keep it in your pocket. I don't use one and over the years on my GR II I have gotten some scuffs and blemishes on the screen, but nothing major. I believe the GR III uses tougher gorilla glass like many smartphones do, since it's also a tough screen.

I thought I mentioned it, but basically, doing the full pres requires some concentration to make sure I don't half-press by accident. This is not a big deal, but if I KNOW I'm going to be using snap focus for some scene, I prefer to just have it on and not worry about it. It's just a matter of preference. There is really no big benefit.

I was looking for a video on snap focus. I am having problem with it. F/8, S/200, ISO/1600 full press snap focus mode @ 1m distance. Still having blurred image. What could be the reason?
@EYExplore
@EYExplore 3 жыл бұрын
At that distance the DOF is very very shallow even on f/8, so you have to really nail the distance. That's in the case of focus blur, but if you mean motion blur, then you just have to increase the shutter speed. For moving subjects at that distance 1/200 is not really that fast.
@TheNowsher
@TheNowsher 3 жыл бұрын
@@EYExplore My subject wasn't moving fast. Subject distance was approximately 15ft. I guess DOF is the problem.
@EYExplore
@EYExplore 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheNowsher Well, if your snap focus distance is 1m at f/8, you get a zone that's from about .8m to 2.5m. 2.5m is equal to approx. 8 feet. So if the subject was 15 feet away, then they were totally out of your selected snap focus zone!

@EYExplore
@EYExplore 3 жыл бұрын
When you turn on snap focus, it just works no matter how you press the shutter button. Half-pressing does nothing (though it might lock exposure, I'm not sure). This is why I like to have it on. It takes away the 'pressure' of using full-press snap. Altough I love how 'available' full-press snap is, especially when I need it all of a sudden!

Would you say the full snap press is a bit slower than your snap focus customization settings? Also, based on your settings, you still have to press the shutter button fully or half press to take photo. Thank you so much.
@EYExplore
@EYExplore 3 жыл бұрын
When snap focus is enable, then half-pressing the shutter does nothing (though it might lock exposure, not sure) and a full press takes the photo. The difference is that you don't have to mash the button down quickly, as you do in full-press snap. I think both modes have their place. I use both, depending on the situation: full-press snap when I'm caught off-guard, and regular snap when I'm anticipating the shot more.

Late answer but might explain to others. You need to be in aperture priority or manual mode and set your aperture manually. So you'd set it to F2.8 and you can set whichever distance you like with the snap focus. You can use either manual or automatic ISO. Iirc lower limit for the 3x is 100 and upper limit 102000? I don't have my cam in the hands now, but you can easily Google this information toi

Essentially, Snap focus is zone focusing. It's the same thing. The difference is how you interact with the camera as a tool. When I use my SLR with a manual lens, I turn the focus ring to set the zone. The GR is very small and has no focus ring, so you control the zone by selecting it in the camera. I recently figured out that if you hold down the Macro button on the rear of the camera, you can select your snap distance (i.e. your 'zone') by turning the top command dial. I had the camera for nearly 4 years before I figured this out!! :)

I am a Ricoh Pentax fan big time, but surely snap focus is available in every camera? Just set aperture and pre focus in manual focus mode to a set distance and leave it there.

This is true, then it's called zone focus. The key difference is that on the Ricoh you can activated it by pressing the shutter button down quickly (not waiting for AF) and it will automatically go to your preset zone. This way you can use AF most of the time, but instantly switch to zone focus (which is why it's called 'snap' focus).

@@EYExplore yes I agree and it’s cool , but to be honest it’s easier to zone focus and just leave it there. On a full frame it’s a bit trickier but the smaller the sensor gets the easier it is to just trust to pre focus and leave af well alone. AF is only really needed if your lens is a zoom of any appreciable span or a lens 50mm or more, wide angles just look after themselves if you know what you are doing

@@davidlewis1787 Well on the Ricoh it's not easier to zone focus because there is no focus dial. So, Ricoh implement their own system which works slightly differently from regular zone, and they call it snap focus. Also, though I'm a huge user of zone focus I don't believe it's useful for everything. Sometimes AF is simply better. Different tools for different jobs. But if zone focus works for you 100% of the time, don't let me convince you otherwise. :)

@@EYExplore that’s not what I was saying, I wouldn’t zone on a zoom or a telephoto, or indeed whilst wanting artistic effects via aperture, but for street photography or landscape hyper focal distance focussing is useful, all I was saying was that a lot of noise is made about snap focus being spiffy and exciting but actually it’s just something else repackaged by marketing people. All companies do it and I have a list of Pentax cameras and lenses I have collected over the last 25 years

@@davidlewis1787 Perhaps I didn't explain clearly enough that on the GR specifically it adds functionality to the regular zone focus technique. I have manual lenses for my SLR and use zone focusing with them all the time, but snap focus is not about the final effect on focusing, which is certainly the same as zone (you get a particular DOF at a particular distance) but how you physically achieve this on the camera is quite different as the GR does not have a focus gauge nor a focus dial. In fact, manual focusing on the camera is rather impractical. Instead, what Ricoh refers to as 'snap' focus is the idea that you can push the shutter button all the way down without waiting for the AF to kick in and the camera will go straight to your pre-selected zone. Your original assertion is that it's available in every camera, but other cameras simply do not have this feature. In fact, they don't need it because you can physically set the dial to the zone you want, which again is not possible on the GR which does not have a focusing ring with a gauge on the lens. Hence the need for this 'snap' focus concept. You can call it 'instant zone focus' or something instead if that makes it more clear and less like marketing lingo. And honestly, with many new mirrorless cameras lacking distance gauges on their lenses, and even recent AF lenses having useless little gauges, a snap focus feature would be welcome on my other cameras as well.

I too had this same decision to make with the X100F and GR II a few years ago. I chose the GR and I think I made the right choice. I wanted a camera that's very small and portable. While the X100 is pretty small, it's still much bigger than a GR. The GR has probably the best 'performance-to-size ratio' of any camera. :)

@@LukaszPalkaPhoto I yet have to decide. Note having a viewfinder is stopping me at this point of time. The f2 vs f2.8 isn’t a big deal for me.
