Uhmm - correction if I may. On an acoustic piano. The reason the sound stops when you play a key is not that the hammers are resting on the string. The hammer will ALWAYS immediately pull back away from the string after striking. What happens is that once a hammer strikes and pulls back, a damper immediately falls on the string. The damper stops the vibration and the sound. The sustain pedal keeps the damper from doing its job. When pressed, the sustain pedal keeps all the dampers up , thereby allowing the strings to continue to vibrate. When you lift the pedal, the dampers again fall back to their resting place, which is on the strings - stopping the sound.

Absolutely correct. Warren's explanation was not.

Hi Warren. This was a unique lesson, on the Sustain Pedal. Welcome back. Glad you did not have any serious accident while skiing. I sure enjoy your lessons, and I have other KZfaq teachers as well. I started with Julian Bradley’s course (Play Piano by Ear) and he has been taking time with his new Daughter. Then there is the great piano player, Kent Hewett, whose Jazz is so good. Finally there is Jeff Schneider, who does lots of both recorded and live stream. Each of you teaches unique and wonderful lessons. I can tell you about the Drum Pedals. there are two typical types: the solid one and the ones that have a hinge. The hinge gives the stability you need. Sometimes people lift their heal up to cause a rapid shaking for special speed. I did not know about the heavier and larger sustain pedal and I will get one of those, because mine does tend to creep (I have a smooth tile floor under it). Thanks for that suggestion. FInally, I want to know what the Piano sound you chose. It is a very bright sounding piano. My Yamaha has so many piano sounds and I think I like yours best. By the way, what kind of digital piano are you using?

Kerry Zvalueman yes it’s nice to be back. I did only the baby slope so no injuries 😊. Yes I also follow those channels, guys going great work. For piano I’m actually using the virtual piano from Addictive Keys. Then I put my own mild eq, compression, and reverb in post production. However the actual keyboard you see in the video is the Yamaha DGX portable grand. This is a great home electric piano and also sounds natural.

For anyone who's still confused: think of it like a seesaw. When the fingers (left side of seesaw) lifts off, pedal (right side of seesaw) goes down, and vice versa. It's a switching action, at least in this context. Also, Warren, don't tell me the chords at 7:39 was all improvised, it was great

Good morning Mr Warren, is a bright morning here in Nigeria. I am happy considering the fact I am growing through you piano wise may you remain bless. I want to ask for a favour, my church had this yamaha motif xf8. I am having challenge mixing my voices or do I say adding layers to the default sound or something. I mean making my sound unique and also using it as a synth sometimes that is a nightmare. I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on it to help me improve in that area too. Thanks in advance to this lesson. Another challenge is this, you did a great work with me understanding how to form my mionor keys and so on can you also do a lesson of such nature how to understand the blue scale just like the minor scales breaking down all that has to do with minors and it was quite understandable. thanks again.

Excelent tutorial, Warren. Very well explained. One question if i may that more people might have: I have seen many sustain pedal videos and most of them say that in the first chord the pedal needs to be pressing down at the same time you press the keys. In your tutorial you show that even in the first chord, you first press the keys and then press the sustain pedal down. Is this up to the type of piece you are playing or is there any other reason? That becomes confusing when some people say one thing and others say other thing if you know what i mean. Thanks again for the awesome tutorial.
@PianoLessonwithWarren4 жыл бұрын
Igor Sena some people don’t know what they are teaching. The pedal always come after the chord.
@igorsenayoutube4 жыл бұрын
@@PianoLessonwithWarren Hey, Warren. Thanks for the very fast reply and for clearing that out. I was always so confused because 99% teach to have it pressed down at the same time in the first chord only so when i was drawing automation in my DAW for my piano sample libraries(i dont own a real piano) i was always questioning why would that make sense since it didnt to me. Keep up with great work. I just watched a few of your other videos and subscribed right away. Great stuff.
@PianoLessonwithWarren4 жыл бұрын
Igor Sena the basic physics of how the pedal works contradicts what they teach. Look at a real piano. The way the pedal works is that pence a key is pressed, a hammer in side hits the string and it vibrates, this is how a sound is produced. Once you release your finger from the key, the damper stops the string from vibrating and this is how the sound stops ( sound also stops when the string stop vibrating naturally). Now, the sustain pedal is to prevent the damper hitting the strings even after you release your hands from the key - it sustain the sound. It you try to play press the pedal the same time with your hands then what is it sustaining? Remember the goal of the pedal is to allow the sound to continue even after you release your hands.
@igorsenayoutube4 жыл бұрын
@@PianoLessonwithWarren Exactly. When i would watch them teach that and read about what the pedal does exactly i always felt confused because it didn´t made sense to me, so i started searching for more and more videos until i finally found yours(and a few others i had opened in the tabs already) and the way you explained makes more sense, hence why i asked in the first place because i didn´t want to be arrogant to think i knew better than those people, still i had to ask to make sure i wasn´t being taught something wrong which was the case. I guess there are no wrong questions as long as you are asking and killing curiosity to make sure you know the right information. It´s actually crazy the amount of people who are teaching this the wrong way out there(although many of the ones teaching it wrong are doing it in their DAW). But i guess that´s with anything in life and specially on the internet.

When playing any sustain sound you need to use very little pedal and lot more finger legato. Remember this instruments like organs don’t have sustain pedals; so when imitating it on a keyboard we can’t play it the same way we do the piano sound. @wombat56284 жыл бұрын
Found my answer here on why one needs to release the pedal between chords instead of keeping it pressed down all the way, thanks. One question: when playing with two hands, is there a rule which hand the pedal should coordinates with? e.g. when left hand plays chords and right hand plays melody, which one should the pedal follow? and what if both hands play chords?
@PianoLessonwithWarren4 жыл бұрын
No it’s not about the hand, it’s account the harmony. So if you’re on a C chord it doesn’t matter what hand falls first, the pedal changes when you change chord. It also depends on the speed of the song and the style. Generally on faster songs we change the pedal more frequently - even on the same chord.
@wombat56284 жыл бұрын
@@PianoLessonwithWarren So I guess the rule is the pedal follows the chords? If left hand plays chords and right hand plays melody, the pedal changes according to the chords on left hand? What if both hands are playing various chords? Or if both hands play some melody, no chords (i.e. each hand presses no more than 1 key at a time)?
@PianoLessonwithWarren4 жыл бұрын
wombat is you’re playing just melody then you only use the pedal where you can connect the note by fingering. So it sounds like you’re overthinking the pedal thing. It’s more about the sound than the rules - what sound do you want and can the pedal helps you to achieve it? The pedal does one thing, and that is to sustain a chord or a note. From there it’s just experimenting to get the sound and effect you want.
@angelinmerisma69182 жыл бұрын
Iam use the pedal if you press it it completely break the sound basically the opposite is that better for me Orr do I have to learn the other way??

Can you talk about: when and how to cross your left hand over your right, like when you are doing a fast run or arpeggios moving toward the treble, to embellish, or in an ending? Also, when you play to demonstrate things, are you always playing some song with a pre-set harmonic progression? It sounds to me like you may be improvising the chord progression, and not only the right hand melody. You go all over with the chords. It’s not just all I IV V or II V Is, and I think you may be switching keys liberally also, and it seems that you repeat chord sequences less than a lot of music. But maybe you are just playing songs that I don’t know. If you are improvising the harmonic progression (not just the voicing, but the actual chord sequence), can you talk about how you learned that, how we might practice to develop that ability, or if maybe it’s just a talent that some people have and others don’t. I can improvise melodies to go over a fixed set of chords that I know well. But I can’t “pre-hear” what it would sound like if I just decided to switch keys, or to go from major to minor, or to switch the chord progression around completely.
