I saw the Tonfa being used on a pretty drunk and aggressive soccer fan inside the local train station on match day once. Lots of shouting, lots of slurred „Come on then, let’s take this outside!“ and then things went really quick - the drunk dude lunged at a police officer with some sort of object. Might have been a knife, might have been a bottle - I was unable to make that out from the distance and the officer partially obscured my view. Next thing I see is the Tonfa comes out. If I saw this correctly, the first strike went down on the guy’s wrist or forearm, the second one on the side of his knee, the third one on his shoulder and a last one landed in the back (kidney area maybe) after he had started folding up and while he was already well on the way to the ground and howling. Everything was over in less than 10 seconds or so and the guy was probably regretting his life choices with his face laying in the dirt, one officer kneeling on his shoulder and another on his legs. My guess is that this drunken idiot got a bruised knee, possibly a fractured or at the very least heavily bruised forearm / wrist and a few days of being sore in the back as a souvenir from his attack.

Great video, but you taught sheriffs to hit subjects in the head? When I was in the Army Military Police academy head, neck, and groin were off limits and considered deadly force, and if you were caught using deadly force with anything beside your M9 you were going to Leavenworth.

I pretty much don't use any of the "spin" techniques - unless it is to transition from short end hold, to long end hold. I have found that full power spin strikes do funky things on impact, and usage as a "sweeping" type block, seems to work better for me - as an individual. All weapon use is as an individual - a pretty good mindset for me; one that I (try) to keep while learning, and instructing: learn the whole thing, and then focus on the parts that work best for the individual. I think the biggest problem with the PR-24 (and the single tonfa, in general) - is that "it" is supposed to be "they" - used as a pair. Obviously we have developed some effective techniques, but it's really not how they were designed for use from the beginning. We do a lot of unnecessary exposure and use of our off-hand for blocking and grappling techniques, when there's supposed to be another tonfa there. While I have my nostalgia affection for the PR-24, I think it is a tool that is well past it's prime. The image alone, is bad for business - too closely associated with police brutality. I'm actually surprised any agencies still carry it. But, Oakland still carries wooden truncheons... must be a Cali thing. 😄

I have one of these batons, but I don’t have any training. I’ve tried to strike with them or even hold it along my forearm with the short and sticking out, it’s nearly impossible to hold straight. I’m not sure how you’re doing it. Maybe you have to have extremely strong grip or something, I don’t know. But I remember when I try to swing it it’s almost flopping around like crazy.

HI I seem to recall you made a few martial arts dvds? well maybe you can answer a question for me please i discovered there is a mini cane that is the same size as the tonfa I am told it was supposed to be an alternative but it was never very popular my question is if I was going to use such a device do you think there would be tactical advantage to having a metal dome tip at the tip of the cane ? thoughts please thank you.

All od three moves would be highly illegal for police or security personel where i live. They are issued tonfas anyway, which are dead weight on their belt. Straight com-block style rubber batons would be better choice i believe.
