Once you understand this chord structure, your piano playing will never be the same. It's used commonly in both Jazz and Neo Soul, but you'll really hear it used in an absolutely gorgeous way in modern Neo Soul-Inspired tracks that cross genres as well. I love Joey Defrancesco's, the great jazz organ player, saying, "There is no wrong note if you play it with intension!" Cool voicings. An old jazz educator I remember used to also call these "Upper structures".

Stevie Wonder used to love using triads as upper structures. For example, E major over G7 in "You Are the Sunshine of My Life". The ii/V/I progression is palpable: Dm7 (F/D), G7 (E/G), C (Em/C).

Noah, thank you for these amazing videos. You have a great teaching style. I did Classical piano for many years, at the Music Institute of Chicago. Of course, I love it but when I wasn't practicing that, i was playing by ear and I was playing gigs during holidays, etc. I can go for hours with just about anything but now I'm trying to find a bassist to play Jazz with. It's hard to find the right bassist but I'll find someone. I'm a healthy 75 but Jazz makes me feel like I'm about 15. I need your help, largely because I don't know what I don't know. I love harmony and clever voicing. I live in Portland now and we have an amazing Jazz community here. All Portland's troubles fall away when Jazz begins. So, expect to hear from me. You have the stuff I need to acquire. Whatever you have to say, I'm interested but so are many others. I remember Barry Harris said, "Never think you're the only pianist. Dude! I am also a fantasy/sci Fi nerd. ANNND have been exploring this triad pairing thing since the pandemic began essentially. I have been using a sort of formula to learn these chords. Say if you keep a C7 (shell voicing) in your left hand, then I play in the right hand G-, A-, D, and Ab/Eb and then maybe even an F# after that. Then I just transpose this mess to work over all the other dominant 7 chords...lately I have been trying two minor chords a whole step apart. Like E minor over D minor, and transposing that...my favorite is a spread triad in each hand like B- over C spread out in 5ths basically. One of my first exposures to jazz that really charmed me was The Woods off Chick Corea's Mad Hatter record. Fantasy and jazz mixed together! Hey there's Fantasy Metal - why not Fantasy Jazz?

I was excited to see this come up as I've recently been experimenting with a similar approach using shell chords. I particularly like C/Em either with your triads or with 1 5 shells. Really any vi chord over the root seems to work.

If you alternate between slash voice position, they automatically create tension without necessarily needing a dominant function. For instance C/B creates tension when "home" is B/C. Tried this today with A/Fsus4/C (C13b9). Also Bbm/Cm you can play in modes of Ab Major.

Would be nice to also add the respective scale for each combination, such as Dmin/Cmin = C-Dorian scale, or Dmaj/Cmaj = C Lydian, etc.

The chords will tell you most of the notes. For example, D/C D F# A and C E G Put those notes in order and you get C D E F# G A you can choose B or Bb both options will work.

This was timely as I’ve just been thinking about mn6 + major triad a fifth higher for melodic minor voicings. For example C Eb A + B D G = C mn major voicing, or F Bb D + Eb Gb C = an F sus b9 voicing (this time the major triad a fifth higher is on the bottom, in first inversion). One more Db G Bb + C F A = Db Lydian Augmented.

George Garzone has super cool triadic shifting concept. You surely know it. As a saxophonist i like to play a lot of them in a row, build the tension and resolve it just by ear. I like to practise as many triad combinations and patterns with variety of rhythms and than like with everything you can use it anywhere if you can resolve it. The rule of thumb is that you dont double note in a triad pair/hexatonic. My favorite combinations are f/b (tritone away) c/bb, c/b, c/c#(mixolydian b9b13 but works also on major chord, it has a cool spanish sound, stealed it from Kenny Garrett), c/d+, c+/d+(whole tone scale), c+/eb+ (augmented scale) c/eb, c-/eb- (both are from diminished) I also like that cm/d sound (from melodic minor #11 scale) you mentioned in the video.

@@NoahKellman sure, a lot of legends have great triadic concepts. Also Bergonzi and Walt Weiscopf. Chad LB surely teach and use them also. Thank you for this great video as always. Love your content. 👌🤓🙏🔥❤🐕. Another cool one is cm/d for F7 sus4 chord (which is sub for Cm chord) giving that sus4(b9) sound to it. The great thing is to try to play the hexatonic you already know on different chords.

B/C comes from harmonic minor. It’s the maj7#9 chord. There are great triad pairs in that scale. Cool combinations of augmented and diminished triads too. I also like Am/Bb to voice a G-6 chord. I use it as a sub for E-7b5 also. Try this pair when you want to play something interesting instead of the iib5 chord. This one is good too. Bb/Abm. This is a cool alters voicing for Galt. It comes from harmonic major. It combines the backdoor, and altered tensions. I would also recommend using spread triads with these. That’s where they really sound good.

Also I love fantasy - just finished the stormlight archives for a second time- very good. I recommend Naomi Novik uprooted, also Magician by Raymond E Feist. If you like Sci Fi , check out Iain M Banks ‘culture’ novels. For fantasy the series of books about Druss by David Gemmell are good, also David Eddings, Michael j Sullivan and Katherine Arden books are good. Just a few there are too many great fantasy and Sci Fi books to mention!

Create a chart, one axis is Cmaj 12 times, then Cminor 12 times, then the other axis is major triads in every key followed by every minor triad, then you would know every possible combo. Maybe omit ones that share notes, or you could triple it for each possible inversion

Good question. In all honesty I just didn’t think of it because I was approaching this very much from the vantage point of Triad Pairs, but it’s true that placing triads on top of seventh chords creates nice upper structures and I should have thought to mention that! Thanks for pointing it out

Cool. But might it be clearer if you wrote these as one chord on top of another separated by a horizontal line? To me, using the / symbol connotes a bass note. C/D to me means a C triad with a D in the bass, not a D triad. Why not write them like polychords, which they (in some cases) are?

Yes, exactly. That's the established convention for guitar players - but perhaps we have to start thinking of them as chords too, unless there's a better way of writing them!

You could also try using augmented and diminished chords. I wonder how many combinations there are if you only include those combinations in which no notes are repeated. Of course swapping around which chord is on the bottom and on the top changes the sound as well

I thought Bbmin/Cmin was amazing! It had a bit of "Tristan chord" flavor to me, with that tritone between the 5 and b9 followed by an 11, which kind of goes with the Tristan chord intervals being a tritone over a perfect fourth? Only maybe inverted. I don't know, I thought it was great haha I was very disappointed that you didn't enjoy it, was expecting to see it being explored a bit more

do not confuse slash chords (chords in inversion or with a different base than the tonic) and polychords (combination of triads or 4 notes chords stacked upon each other)

Dollgirl and the first hundred pages are brutal but it feels like you earn the setup and subliminally absorb the world lore/physics. 01 The Way of Shadows 02 Shadows Edge 03 Beyond the Shadows And if you are liking Brandon Sanderson The Mistborn trilogy and the night Angel trilogy share a similar aesthetic.

So, would you clarify a "slash" chord as you're using it where it is stacked triads apart from a simple chord with a specific note in the bass like in D7/A by using the chole chord name? ("Dmaj/Cmaj" which would be different than "D/C" being just a D major chord with a C note in the bass)

Hey, great question! Yeah, I would specifically call it a poly chord. Whereas I think a slash chord could be anything with the "slash" really. To write poly chords the most clear way, it would be with a straight line underneath rather than a slash actually

This might be the classical me here but if I were to see D/C I'd imagine it's a D major chord with the C as bass, could you correct me if I should look at it how you mention in lead sheets rather than simly a D major with C as bass with out including the third and fifth of the bass?

My understanding of a slash chord is that what is written beneath the slash refers to a note in the bass, NOT an entire chord, as you suggest. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but this part of your video really confuses me. When you notate the C 6/9 add#11 as C/D, I believe the "D" should only indicate the addition of the single note D in the bass, and not a D major triad.

Hey David, you are correct. Though sometimes I believe poly chords are written this way as well, for clarity these should be written as poly chords with a horizontal line rather than a slash

Hey yeah it can be! People also call them Upper Structures depending on the chords. I like to think of them as simple triad pairs but for harmony (as triad pairs can also be used melodically).
