The tritone is a very dissonant interval also known as the devil's interval! On the fretboard is the distance of a diminished fifth or an augmented fourth.
This interval is really useful for injecting an outside sound to your improvisations. Remember that the key to playing outside is: do not stay too long on the outside notes and know how and when to come back in.
In today's example, our backing track is in A Dorian so our basic scale for this would be A minor pentatonic. To get the outside sound, we are going to transpose it a tritone above to the E flat minor pentatonic.
Timing is very important in outside playing and a great rule of thumb is to introduce your outside scales whenever you hear a drum fill.
Another tip is to keep your normal scales and your outside sounds in the same area of the fretboard, so it sounds coherent.

David I think you accidentally said E minor pent scale instead of E-flatt pent. Confused me for a minute. You fixed it later on in the video. I can't stress enough how grateful I am to have a teacher of your caliber at my disposal. Truly amazing

Hi Ya David... First of all, I just would like to say thank you for your vids and also how great they have been important to me. I´ve been a guitar teacher for many years and I believe our approaches as helpers are quite similar, especially for making students have to think about musicality and come out of "boxes". Cheers and bends Up!!!!!!!!

Randy Rhoads did this, for instance, in Crazy Train. When he’d make his scale runs, at the very end he’d pick a note out of key. He was moving so fast it’s nearly imperceptible. It grabs your attention and makes the track engaging to the listener

David Wallimann, why are you using the Eb tritone substitution using the Eb pentatonic scale? In the key of A major the tritone substitution is Bb dominant 7th not Eb, so I'm very confused

Alright, so what if you transpose to the tritone below? play the Eb below the A?

Heads up - I think you're diagram for minor pentatonic position 1 is wrong. I was confused for a bit because it didn't sound or look right. Thanks for the video and all the work you put in.
@mthnyc
@mthnyc 5 жыл бұрын
Yes there is an error in the A min pentatonic diagram starting the root position. The scale chart suggests a #5 (F natural, which is not in the scale). That should be a perfect 5th (E) instead.
@mthnyc
@mthnyc 5 жыл бұрын
That’s not the only problem either. Moving to pentatonic position 2 from the b3 (position 2) the tritone modulation correctly indicates starting from the b7 but shows the scale shape for the minor pentatonic starting from the 4th of the scale (2nd inversion) but the scale shape is wrong. The correct shape is what is listed as “position 5” but should start from Db (the b7th for Eb pentatonic.

hi, I have question, is this tritone outside playing also applicable on superimposing scales? example, if we play in A dorian, the tritone scale would be D# dorian. But over A dorian track, we can also superimposing to B phyrgian, C lydian, D mixolydian, E aeolian, F# locrian and G ionian. So can we play F phyrgian, F# lydian, G# mixolydian, A# aeolian, C locrian, and C# ionian?
@Danumurti18
@Danumurti18 2 жыл бұрын
@@vicferrari89 actually I realize that they're all same, I mean F phyrgian, F# lydian, G#mixolydian, and so on. So of course it work. Superimposing and tritone sub surely spice up your melodies. 👍🏻

Dude, that's not anywhere near the tritone sub. You're just playing outside following a random rule (ie. play the same scale a tritone up/down). You could choose any other interval, like maj third or sharp five, for the same kind of effect. :)
@Wallimann
@Wallimann 5 жыл бұрын
You're right that I could use any other interval for the effect! But yes, typically tritone substitutions will replace Dominant 7 chords for another Dominant 7 a tritone above or below. Just taking and applying the concept to licks. :)
