How to Use Watercolor paint and Indian Ink on Yupo

I've got some tips and techniques for using the synthetic Yupo paper with watercolor paint and Indian ink this week. Last week I was using Distress Oxides on paper and thought it would be fun to play some more with the paper and share the results of using paints with it.

I just tried oil paints on Yupo and It was very satisfying. I didn’t use any medium because then it was too fluid. The paint out of the tube worked wonderfully. I’m really liking the finish you get with yupp and oils.

I have Yupo paper in black that I’ve used with alcohol ink. I am also a watercolor artist so I am very intrigued and excited to try watercolor on Yupo. I will have to buy some white. I’ve also used India ink in a number of projects with my watercolor which makes them stand out so much more. It’s a great element to create contrast. I’m really glad you posted this and I have selected to follow you. I look forward to seeing what you do next.

Wow! Using the straw with the round shapes made things look organic. I am primarily an abstract acrylic painter but I do create collage with acrylics, Derwent Inktense Blocks, watercolor, etc. I loooooooove this video!

What you said about messes sometimes working themselves out (or not) that was so true and it really helped hearing that. I haven't been very happy with anything I've made lately and I'm afraid I'll get so frustrated I'll stop painting altogether (hope not!)

I received a sample pack of yupo as a gift and recently decided to experiment with it. I used some pearl alcohol ink I have for resin but even with fixative it wipes right off. So I have more experimenting to do! Thank you for the video, it's given me more ideas to try :)

I have only used alcohol ink on Yupo. I love that. I want to start watercolor on Yupo to see the difference. I seem to have difficulty painting in watercolor these days, I think it is because I am attracted to abstracts - not what I did in watercolor.

Excellent! I've been painting on Yupo for many years and love the effects of watercolor on Yupo. Works well for both realistic and. Abstract paintings. Great for abstract florals!

Fabulous, Kim! I have been using Yupo with alcohol ink but need to try it with other mediums. This has really inspired me. I just recently bought the same brand paper as you used on this and I really like it so I’ll try some Indian ink and watercolours on it! Thanks! :)

I love how this turned out - Yupo is so much fun to play with! I recently did some experimenting on it with wet into wet with India ink, alcohol ink and acrylic inks and loved it. I'll have to try adding some watercolors into the mix. I think I'm going to have a play with sprays like Glimmer Mist and see how they work too.

I just got inkjet gloss paper, heard that u can use the front or the backside of the paper. Gonna try it. Also gonna try poster paper.

I've been thinking about getting some Yupo paper as I see a lot of my friends playing with it and alcohol inks. I had NO idea you could use it with watercolour and ink, so this has really opened my eyes to it. Could I use it to make card backgrounds? It wouldn't ever wear off? And what brand would you recommend and where can I get some? Xx

+Ruth Andrews - Crafting While the Baby Naps hey up, you could easily use it on a card. I shall try it and let you know! It shouldn't rub off if you use watercolour or inks that dry on it, but if you use inks that don't dry well, like the distress oxides for example, then they will rub off. So you might need to use stazon to stamp on it. Acrylic paints dry well and alcohol inks, as you have seen. The only thing you need to worry about is if the yupo gets wet again then the watercolour might come off or smudge. As to brand I usually go on lowest price per sheet, I think it is all yupo, just branded for different companies, I could be wrong. If you go the price route just make sure you are comparing like for like, so make sure the pack size and sheet sizes are the same when you compare your prices! 😁

I bought the Yupo paper to use with alcohol inks, but I haven't used it yet. Have you used the Mineral paper made of rocks? I have bought it but not used it yet. I would love to see what you could do with it!

I have had my eye on the mineral rock paper, and wondered how it compares, but haven't got it or tried it yet. Let me know how you get on with it when you use yours!

Kim Dellow I will. From my understanding it’s just so similar to the yupo as it doesn’t buckle with loads of wet medium. But, I do think if you heat it, it doesn’t warp though I will let you know how it works!!

kim love what you did with watercolor and india ink. Have you ever tried alcohol ink and watercolor?

Thank you. So I have used alcohol inks and watercolor on yupo but separately! Not together. I would think you would need to layer them as I shouldn't think they would mix. What about you? Have you tried them together?

So I haven't had a problem yet but then these Yupo pieces are in a box, so away from any light anyway. But I am thinking that it should be more to do with the lightfastness of the paint and I don't think that yupo will affect that differently to traditional paper, but I've not tested it!

It is not "Indian" ink......it is "India" ink.

Depends which country you are in. I'm in the United Kingdom and it's called 'Indian Ink' here.

"Indian ink" is more commonly used in British English and is also commonly used in some other English-speaking countries, such as Australia and New Zealand. "India ink" is more commonly used in American English, although "Indian ink" is also used in American English to a lesser extent.
