Great work Chris. What I do is actually get a decent lane of automation going and then turn off vocal rider and paste the automation to the input gain and never look at, if needed though you just manually tweak. If manually pasting, you do have paste the first node at 0 db etc but you can also create a macro using logical editor that does it with 1 mouse click...mostly. I always scale and smooth it a little as its just too easy to iron the life out of it...its those unexpected things of expression that make it human.

Thank you so much for this video! I've been using this plug in incorrectly and this made a world of difference! I used it on a vocal track but I also used it on my flute track and it works great for that. This will save me a lot of time from doing automation on those tracks. Sounds much better than when I do it manually...more natural. Thanks again. You always have great videos. Stay well!

I've used this plugin before but never to write automation. That is a great tip. I've had some annoying experiences with this plugin where I've gotten an over-compressed sound when putting it at the end of the chain. For example, trying to turn up vocals a bit and this is restricting them. I've never used at the beginning of the chain so I might give that a try in lieu of chopping and tweaking audio snippet volumes for the vocals which is my usual method.

@@jeffmarc1846 The way I use it (Gain Control) does not require the use of the sidechain btw... There's a reason why you have the option to use of not the sidechain on this plugin... This video is not only on the VR but on how to automate it in Cubase
@jeffmarc1846

@@mixdownonlineThe manufacturer shows how to automate, doing it the right way, using a side chain of all music. I would want the people I'm teaching, and who's trust I'm looking to gain, to learn the best way, the right way, the condoned way of doing everything and anything I can - correctly. The manufacturer isn't going to let the signal go dead if you don't use the side chain, however, they do not offer instructions, nor support, using it as you do; As they don't offer instructions on using it how you are doing so, it is clear to me, at least, that they don't condone it, but if using such a great, yet simple, device, in such a very simplistic, signal averaging method, and teaching automation incorrectly, for the device you are automating works for you, go at it! Perhaps tho, next time read the instructions to offer your subscribers the most you can. Best of luck!

Hi Chris, you're one of the most helpful teachers for me, especially for production with cubase. I like this video about the vocal rider. Today I was trying to print the results into the audio file using render in place. It hasn't been successful. I had no other plugin inserted. I just wanted to have the levelled audio to do some final adjustments manually afterwards. After writing with the automation I switched the channel and vocal rider to read mode but it didn't work. Then I tried to insert another plugin, e.g. a hard driven limiter and that was printed to the audio without anny problem. What am I doing wrong to get the vocal ride printed ?

I like to use my cc121 for riding vocals, it’s more flexible and I can make choices in the rides that waves rider can’t. Also, I learned that riding is more meant for supporting the dynamics in relation to the track, not so much controlling or policing them.
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, if you rider the vocals after all FX, and I do ride the vocals (manually) in context for sure but how I use Vocal Rider (If so) is before that point to even out the dynamics before going through the chain, at this point, it's the dynamic of the recording that I focus on opposed to the relation with the mix.

i use the vocalrider a lot as you described in your video. it is a good tool to keep the volume of a voice on the right level. in the beginning you mentioned the bass rider. with this plugin i am disappointed. there is no way to write the automation of the fader. the answer i got from waves was short: there is no automation. thank you for the nice tutorial.

Hello Chris. I am revisiting this video, as I am mixing a very dynamic voice and don’t want the compressor to do the whole hard work. As the automation records the fader position, I guess you do a render in place after applying Vocal Rider, so that you can work with a volume balanced track if you want, for example, apply compression or other processing, right?

If I'm using Variaudio in Cubase, the pitch correction is made directly on the audio file itself so VR will be applied after pitch. If I'm using Autotune or another plugin, it doesn't matter much if it comes before or after.

i think not because the curve applies to the plugin not the channel volume. you would need to render the wave to be able to remove it or copy the curve to channel volume out (not sure if that has the same scale though. if you want it pre everything else rendering is the only way) - just disable all other inserts render with chain then pull the other inserts over to the rendered track in mixer view and enable them again.

First, there is a Play Control under the sample list that you need to click on or that starts automatically when Auto-Play is activated. Now if you don't hear anything and you're using Cubase Pro, that is probably because your Control Room is active and routed nowhere. If you don't use the Control Room as your main Outputs, desactivate it. Or use it and routed the your Main Output channels. Hope that helps!

Hi! Is there some way of writing automation like this in cubase without vocal rider?
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 4 жыл бұрын
Yes but you will have to do it manually by automating the Gain (Pre Effect) or the channel's fader (Post effects)

@@mixdownonline Okay. I vent and bought the Vocal Rider. After some tinkering it seems to me that it works best if its the first plugin in the vocal chain. With it the vocals seems to sit better in the mixes. Thanks!

I love your videos and I use this method a lot. Wasn’t the question actually about adding that saved automation to the pre-gain to save CPU? The way you’ve done it here it is still automation which, even though it’s written, still taxes the CPU. FYI. Another rider plugin that is similar to Waves Rider is ‘Outlaw’ by WA Productions.

i would render in place to a new track, disabling all other inserts. then move the remaining inserts to the new track.

Realraven2000 thanks for that. But if only there was a way to render in place to a mono track, rather than stereo though.

Hi Chris, if Vocal Rider (VR) is an insert, already "leveling", I'm not sure why the automation is necessary? I'm sure I'm very wrong, and I will learn something in your response, but it seems to me the automation is only going to tell vocal rider to do what it's already doing as an insert on the track anyway. Kind of like if I play a piano part, and the engineer creates a sheet music score from it, and then puts that music in front of me and says, "play this". I don't need the sheet music to follow something "I created". Thank you so much for these GREAT videos, and I hope my question makes sense.

I think the pro of it would be that it enables you to tweak the autmation to taste whenever needed. And imo it kind of needs the tweaking in many cases, in my experience anyway. It can get me in the ballpark but usually not all the way there until I tweak the automation.

why after printing the automation to the signal, didn't u turn off the plugin.
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 4 жыл бұрын
Because I'm automating the plugin itself so the plugin needs to be on and in Read mode

I keep trying it and its not writing Vocal Rider's actions as automation. Is there a step that was missed? How is my DAW (Nuendo 10) supposed to know to look to the plugin for its commands?

Is using this plugin just a way to make up for improper vocal capture / mic technique? And why not just use compression?
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 4 жыл бұрын
Good question. Using this plugin, automating the Gain manually or using clip gain is, yes, to compensate for an improper vocal recording or just to even out big dynamics out of a vocal take that would drive a compressor crazy otherwise. A compression will even out the dynamics but can sound over compressed when dealing with a vocal that is too dynamic and this is where using gain automation or Vocal Rider can come in hand :-)

Hi Chris, a great video on using Vocal Rider with Cubase. Not many helpful videos out there. Is there any chance you do a video on using the sidechain function with Vocal Rider? Thanks Chris
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe, but I never used it this way, since I Ride my Vocal in the context of the mix by using my Faderport controller and automating my moves. I will add this to my list though
