I applaud you. Thank you for this thorough explanation, how to choose colours in your colour family and mentioning the sub season/sister season. Thank you for not sending people out to toss out their current clothing and the advice to choose trends that suit your colour palette.

The hardest thing for me is figuring out why I dont like certain nail polishes on me. Your video made so much sense in terms of why certain tones of nail polish look weird on me and how nail polish on the toes are generally more forgiving.

I know what you mean, except that it’s polishes on the toes that are less forgiving on me. I know I need to go for warmer or brighter colours. Things like silver make my feet look weirdly red and splotchy 😄

This is so true! I fall somewhere into the less warmer autumn spectrum but my skin is pale olive, so it never appears really bright or soft nor warm because it looks like it’s „supposed to be darker“ and the green tint makes It a little cooler, it’s a very ambiguous yellow that I have as a skin tone with almost a complete absence of red. Usually dark autumn should be a little intense on Me so I should be soft autumn. But I still need more contrast than soft autumn gives me. I look amazing in the softer colours of dark autumn like eggplant and dark brown burgundy and the darker colours of soft autumn when I’m pale. In summer I tan easily to a very mustardy yellow and don’t need so much contrast anymore. So I look best in soft autumn and soft summer. I would say my most important characteristic is softness paired with darkness (for contrast) in winter. Warmth never really plays a huge part except for in blues and greens. Red based colours usually all work as long as they are somewhat soft, yellows are hard to pull off. The best about being olive is that I can pull of quite a big range of colours, the worst part is at my best colours are very hard to find

I feel like you wrote this for me. I’m a medium dark brown complexion. As far as I can tell I don’t have olive in my skin. My undertone is warm, my overtone is reddish. But warmth is not really a consideration for me. It’s all about how muted and dark the colors are. I guess my contrast is higher in the winter so I’m leaning more into dark soft colors right now. I wish there was a season dedicated to softness + darkness. Btw, I make a distinction between chroma and clarity. Chroma to me is looking at how soft the color is due to the addition of grey pigment. Whereas clarity is looking at how soft a color becomes due to the addition of black or white pigment or how bright a color becomes due to the addition of blue or yellow pigment. High chroma is not high clarity.

This is such an important video! Everyone who is thinking of getting a color analysis or has already done so would really benefit from watching this. I had my colors done in person last year by another analyst using a similar system, and I wish we had discussed sister seasons. The analyst actually seemed very resistant to the idea of even straying from my exact season (which is cool winter), so I really appreciate how you used cool winter and cool summer as examples of sister seasons here. This is incredibly helpful. Thank you!

So happy to hear this! I believe a colour analysis should open up choices in colour instead of restricting it. I've seen how many people struggle with trying to follow these rigid rules. Delighted this 'Cool' example worked for you! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

Super video… I’ve never had my colours done but I’m guessing I would be a soft autumn as I have very low contrast. However, I have very warm features, in fact, that pumpkin orange is one of my favourite colours! so I take colours mostly from soft and warm autumn. I find soft summer colours don’t suit me, even though it would be my sister palette. Just wondering if this happens with anyone else?. Also, does anyone else find that it’s hard to find clothes that suits your colours when it’s not your season? For example, looking at my wardrobe you would think that autumn never ends. A way around this I find is that in the summer, when clothes are a lot brighter, I sometimes borrow from warm Spring’s pallette. A brighter coloured top with muted or neutral separates and accessories can look really nice.

❤ Hi Sarah! I'd love if you could go into the details around the characteristics of "dark/deep" as the first thing you see in a person. For example, you're a cool winter - but Lucy Liu is a Dark Winter. At first glance you have similar overtones in skin, same hair color and even eye color I think- so what really makes her "dark/deep" in comparison to you? I'm a deep winter- I have darker ish skin. But since the skin color/overtone is not what dictates the subgroup then what's reallly the telling factor of a deep/dark??? THANK YOU SO MUCH

Sarah, this makes so much more sense to me than ever before! I know I am a Deep Winter. I can wear a black t-shirt with no makeup and look ok. In late summer through fall have always "borrowed" some of the deep tones in purples, blues, and some browns from the Deep Autumn season. I have golden surface tones when I tan, and I have green, gold, and rust flecks in my hazel eyes, which leads people to believe I am a warm season. However, I look like the "The Great Pumpkin" with anything orange near my face.

The point about the whole outfit not just the top being in pallet is so interesting. I am autumn soft, but while i look good in white shirts, i look awful in white tights. I have to wear ivory tights. But a true white top is fine. I pull off cool shirts pretty well too. I guess bc summer soft is my complimentary?

Maybe they're more grey or purple white tops? Apparently nature fibres like cotton are harder to achieve crisp clear colors in than synthetics .

I have trouble knowing where one season begins and the other ends. I was analyzed as a true spring (brightness, lightness and warmth all looked equally good on me) and now as I’m trying to apply it to my life I’m finding difficultly. I like that I can wear anything in the spring pallet but then I also have to know when the colors cross over into winter, summer, autumn. I seem to be able to identify if a color is bright, light, or warm but then am confusing myself it really belongs in spring. Like a light pink, is it really spring or is it summer- the warm/cool isn’t always clear. Maybe I’m just thinking about it to much and wanting too clear of boundary’s 😅

I feel the same way about spring/summer pinks . In the 2000's as a child,I would say I like the light pink ,point to a hoodie - and then hesitate because I wasn't sure if there was a touch of yellow - like in our 'lite brite' toy. Seeing it typed as clear salmon on the Carol Jackson's 80's video uploaded to utube definitely played into what I saw back then. I'm also feeling like there's more clarity over why I sometimes feel a certain way over some colors and which ones fall where ,but sometimes times I'm stuck wondering where some things sit - like muted blue , trying to decide whether it's light or muted. I think I've seen sage green put in both cool summer and soft,or winter bright blue put in spring bright. I tend to feel like I'm over contemplating where my instincts would've kicked in before. All I can say is put something really earth tone and muted or a cool grey swatch against whatever you're considering....and if it doesn't go.... Otherwise take a step back and let your instincts step forward.🙃☺️ Happy Hunting!

I know light pinks are hard to decipher but try to learn to see the effect it has in your face instead. Drape the garment on yourself, see if your skin looks dulled out/greyed, if your features wash out or fade, if your eyes look more dull, if any imperfections show more and/or your skintone looks more uneven - if any of this happens, it might not be the right pink for you. It's not too bad if it's not exactly a spring pink, as long as it flatters your complexion/face. But in general: summer pinks have more blue and more grey added than spring pinks autumn pinks have more grey added to them than spring pinks winter pinks have more blue added to them than spring pinks (and if we go darker, also have more black added) For light pinks of winter and spring I know it can be hard to see whether you're looking at a pastel or an icy color (icy colors are more for winters) but you can learn to see if the color works for you or if it doesn't. When you're shopping online it is even harder, because a color can be displayed way off the truth on screen. That's why I think it is very important to learn to see the effects color has on our faces. And even if you learned to see it perfectly, maybe the lighting in store threw off the way a color did look on you. But keep in mind that you can always return garments that don't work for you. So re-check in proper lighting right after buying something. I hope this helps.

Isn't that quite limited? If you only stick to your first characteristic, then Dark Winters are supposed to choose only dark colors? (And then cool, so obviously cooler than Dark Autumn of course.) What I'm trying to say is, on that piece of paper, all 3 winter palettes contain both light and dark colors. So I think it's rather helpful, otherwise how can you choose a light color, but still "dark" at the same time, as a Dark Winter? I don't know, but it looks like it's a little bit 'restricted' for those with Dark or Light as their dominant characteristic. I mean, Bright and Soft colors are easy to spot, from lighter to darker shades. The same goes for Cool and Warm. As a Cool Winter is easy to find cool light / cool dark colors, and brighter than Cool Summer.

I’ve been analysed by House of Colour and I’ve found their system quite limiting! I don’t think they have sister seasons, they just find out your main season and then find the subseason by ranking every colour within the season... I’m a Blue Spring so I’m next to winter but I don’t think that makes me a bright spring within your system? Or does it?? I have no idea! Would it be worth getting analysed again with a different system?

@@nowvoyager81 oh interesting... my consultant checked summer vs autumn (because she thought I was muted due to my hazel eyes) at first she thought I was cool but then she changed her mind, so compared autumn vs spring and decided I was spring without draping me in any winter colours! I was surprised when we moved on to rating all the spring colours without first comparing it to winter but she had made up her mind. I don’t think I’m a winter but but it would’ve been good to see the difference there. I think the fact that there are only 4 pallets to fit into makes it limiting, and the subseason is determined by which colours within the season look “best”. For me it was all the blues and greys which I don’t really like or resonate with at all
