So far I've used my smartphone to record all my hiking videos. Using your phone to record your hiking and backpacking trips is a cheap, ultralight way to relive your trips with some great footage. In this video, I talk about the benefits of using your phone for hiking videos, and walk through my own setup, including accessories, microphones, and apps.

Welcome to my random musings on all things backpacking. If you haven't already guessed, my name is Dan. I was bit by the backpacking bug in 2014 and since then haven't gone one day without thinking about my next adventure. I'm from Chicago, a great city but...not so much known for its bountiful backpacking opportunities. Nevertheless, I haven't let that stop me from enjoying the outdoors. Hope my videos leave you with one or two takeaways, or even better, inspire you to head out on the trail. Thanks for watching! Have fun out there!
- Dan

Love this video Dan. I'm watching it two years later and it's still relevant .Funny, I just got rid of my Pixel 2XL back in August 2023! That was a really great phone and camera. I now have the Pixel 6. I've been going back and forth trying to decide what to use on trail and for many of the reasons you mention I keep coming back to my phone. Another big reason is that the GoPro cameras aren't that great in low light. And, it's much easier to get the video files from a phone as well. Have a great weekend!

Thanks for sharing this. I use a GoPro8 and the stabilization has been awesome for the trail. I use the Jaws clamp to attach the GoPro easily to branches and such to avoid using a tripod. Cheers!

Last week I was able to order the Joby mount on Amazon for about $18.00. I love it. Now to find a belt clip that is compatible...

Hey Dan, another great video, thanks. Two comments, if I may. I'm also a Filmic Pro user and love it. But on iOS, the default camera app (for shooting stills) is really limited so I would strongly recommend other iOS users switch to a better app. One such limitation with the default app is that AE and AF are locked at the same point - you can't set them independently (I can't understand why Apple made this choice). FWIW, I use Camera+2 but there are some other great apps out there. Second, I recently purchased the Backpack Strap Mount. It has the GoPro connector and would require a smartphone holder with the GP mount (but you already have that). What's nice about it is that you can easily shoot POV video hands-free. It's made by Wealpa and is around $10. Can't wait for your next video!

Thanks! My default app has the same AE/AF locking issue. It would be a million times better if they were set independently. Thanks for the extra info!

I just came upon this video for tips how to place the smartphone on your backpack w/o looking like a stalker lol. I plan to be a travel vlogger and holding a gimbal/stand while recording makes you stand-out which I'm trying to avoid as much as possible. Yes, I know lots of other youtubers just use their phones when they started due to financial reasons. Simply use what you've got. Not a lot of us can afford expensive Sony video cams worth $1K.

So many good points and so much great kit. Yet ANOTHER video that makes me feel miserable, inadequate and technically inept because I don't have the stuff, the skills or the knowledge you have! Damn! What else are you going to produce? Give us all a heads-up so that just maybe, just once I can get ahead. 👍

Is the phone clip good for pov video while on the backpack strap?
@DanGoesHiking
@DanGoesHiking 2 жыл бұрын
It could work, but you'd probably have to stabilize it a bit because it'll move around a lot as you're walking

@@DanGoesHiking So probably action cam like insta360 go 2 works better :( I'm considering the belt clip mount or the peak design clip with creator mobile mount

Hey Dan, great info, thank you for this! do you have a suggestion on how to store photos and videos while on a longer hike. Planning to walk the Camino de Santiago and will need to download from my camera regularly. The cloud is not an option due to weak or no internet at time. Thanks.

Thanks! Is recommend an external hard drive and whatever cables you need to connect the two. You can find some waterproof/dust proof options out there. Good luck on your hike!

Hi Dan very helpful video. Could you give the specific link for the 1/4 adapter? There are quite a few things on amazon that come up for a Go Pro 1:4 adapter. I’ve got a ultapod with a manfrotto phone grip already.

Able to film while it's attached to the clip on the pack? Or is it too wobbly?
@DanGoesHiking

I'd say it's too wobbly. The stabilization on phones isn't good enough like a go pro.
